Hace poco falleció uno de los más grandes futbolistas de todos los tiempos y por supuesto su trayectoria y recuerdo recorrió todo el ámbito futbolístico alrededor del mundo.
Solamente lo vi jugar una vez en cancha de Boca Juniors, yo era un joven de 15 años en aquellos momentos y no recuerdo mucho del partido ni de su actuación; por esas leyendas urbanas que circulan en todos los ambientes y no es excepción en el fútbol, se decía por aquí que Pelé nunca había tenido buenos partidos en la Argentina, las estadísticas dicen lo contrario y para eso están, dato mata relato.
Me gusta mucho ver programas deportivos donde se invita a ex futbolistas, siempre tienen anécdotas e historias muy interesantes que son dadas a conocer tiempo después de ocurridas, ocurrieron durante los partidos, en las concentraciones o en los momentos posteriores a la finalización del encuentro, son jugosas, risueñas y entretenidas, nos remontan a otras épocas y nos hacen conocer la pasión, la picardía y el respeto que en general se tienen los jugadores.
La anécdota que voy a contar no es mía la escuché en uno de esos programas y fue relatada por un gran futbolista y entrenador argentino que lo enfrentó en varias oportunidades en la época de oro del Santos de Brasil, me refiero a Alfio Basile, campeón mundial de clubes con Racing Club en 1966 y luego campeón con Argentina dos veces consecutivas en la Copa América.
Ocurrió en 1968 durante la disputa de la supercopa de campeones intercontinentales que se dividió en dos grupos, por un lado, los campeones por Sudamérica que por aquel entonces eran Santos, Racing y Peñarol y en el otro los de Europa, el Internacionale y el Real de Madrid.
En el encuentro de ida entre el Santos de Pelé y Racing Club de Avellaneda disputado en el estadio Palestra Italia propiedad del Palmeiras, el equipo brasileño contaba con una gran cantidad de estrellas además de O’Rey, entre otras estaba Edú, Clodoaldo, Toninho Guerreiro, Gilmar y el defensor argentino José Ramos Delgado. Cuando el partido se encontraba todavía cero a cero pero con predominio del Santos, Pelé recibe una pelota cerca del área de Racing, la para de pecho y Basile sale rápidamente a cortar la jugada con infracción, con toda la pierna levantada a una altura peligrosa, apuntando con los tapones directamente al pecho del brasileño, Pelé sin inmutarse le hace un sombrero y mientras la pelota caía, Perfumo, compañero de Basile con el cual conformaba una fabulosa dupla central corre desesperado para tratar frenar el avance, Pelé sin dejar caer la pelota también le hace un sombrero y de volea la clava en un ángulo del arco de Agustín Cejas. Un golazo tremebundo.
Basile lo mira a Perfume y le dice: “que lo parió, como juega este muchacho”.
Notas:
- Basile en su conclusión no dijo muchacho sino un término que hoy en día se considera racista y despectivo, eran otras épocas.
- El Santos de Brasil se coronó como el primer campeón de la copa de Campeones Internacionales al ganar la final disputada en el estadio Giuseppe Meazza (Milán) 1 a 0 contra el Internacionale con gol de Toninho.
A memory of Pele
I only saw him play once on the Boca Juniors field, I was a teenager at the time and I don't remember much about the game or his performance, because of those urban legends that circulate in all environments and it is no exception in football, it was said around here that Pelé had never had good games in Argentina, the statistics say the opposite and that's what they are for, data kills the story.
I really like to watch sports programs where ex-soccer players are invited, they always have fascinating anecdotes and stories that are revealed sometime after they occurred, they occurred during matches, in rallies, or moments after the end of the match, they are juicy, smiling and entertaining, they take us back to other times and make us aware of the passion, mischief, and respect that players generally have for each other.
The anecdote that I am going to tell is not mine. I heard it in one of those programs and it was told by a great Argentine soccer player and coach who faced him on several occasions in the golden age of Santos from Brazil, I mean Alfio Basile, world champion of clubs with Racing Club in 1966 and then champion with Argentina two consecutive times in the Copa América.
It happened in 1968 during the intercontinental champions super cup that was divided into two groups, on the one hand, the South American winners who at that time were Santos, Racing, and Peñarol, and on the other the European champions, Internacionale and Real from Madrid.
In the first leg match between Santos de Pelé and Racing Club de Avellaneda played at the Palestra Italia stadium owned by Palmeiras, the Brazilian team had a large number of stars in addition to O'Rey, including Edú, Clodoaldo, Toninho Guerreiro, Gilmar and Argentine defender José Ramos Delgado. Basile looks at Perfume and says: “what gave birth to him, how does this boy play”.
Notes:
- In his conclusion, Basile did not say a boy, but rather a term that today is considered racist and derogatory, those were other times.
- Santos from Brazil was crowned the first champion of the International Champions Cup by winning the final played at the Giuseppe Meazza stadium (Milan) 1-0 against Internacionale with a goal from Toninho.
