[ESP/ENG] La última partida Roger Federer / The last game Roger Federer

in Full Deportes2 years ago (edited)

I confess that I had conceived this publication in another way, but seeing the images of Roger Federer's final match and Rafael Nadal's emotional tears made me change the perspective of this one. So I apologize if it does not meet expectations, but I will try to capture in a few words what this great of world sport has meant and what sport is capable of generating.

Switzerland is one of the most popular countries in the world. Among the many things that support this claim is the fact that it is a state famous for its financial and banking industries. In addition, this country is distinguished by its chocolates and the quality and accuracy of its watches. However, its popularity grew much more, from the irruption in the World TOP of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) of the so-called Swiss Watch.

Roger Federer was born in Basel, Switzerland, in August 1981. But I do not want to expose his biography because I have no quality as a biographer and what you want to know you can search in the network of networks. I prefer to expose my criteria around the one who is considered the best player in the history of tennis, on grass court.

What did I admire most in Roger Federer?

Roger Federer was a gentleman of the so-called white sport and a fierce competitor, he was accompanied by an elegance in the game, an exquisite perfection, a mastery and a backhand stroke, as I have never seen in my life. His way of being, his desire for constant improvement and his nobility make him worthy of being among the best athletes of all time. It was not for nothing that he received different adjectives throughout his professional career, which lasted more than two decades. Among others, he was called Swiss Perfection, The Master, The Express or His Majesty.

Is Roger Federer the best tennis player in history?
I don't have the absolute truth on this subject. What I can say for sure is that his name must be among the best in the history of the ATP: Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Peter Sampra, Jimmy Connors, Andrea Agassi and others I can't think of. Federer is among them. In fact, for me he is among the three best tennis players in history.

Why do I put him in the top 3?

  • He was number 1 in the world for more than 300 weeks; something only surpassed by another out of series, the Serbian Novak Djokovic.

  • He is one of the few tennis players who has managed to win the 4 most important tournaments of world tennis or Grand Slam: Australian Open, Roland Garros in France, U.S. Open and his favorite tournament Wimbledon in England (In the English city he won eight times and no one has won more times than him).

  • He is one of the three tennis players who have managed to win 20 Gram Slam, occupying the third place with that number, only surpassed by Rafa Nadal and Novak Djokovic with 22 and 21 respectively.

  • He managed to win the ATP final, a tournament that gathers the best tennis players in the world during the season, six times. No one in the history of the sport has achieved it more times than him.

  • He is one of the three tennis players with the most Masters 100 tournaments won.

  • He is among the players with the most titles in the history of the ATP.

  • He won gold and silver medals at the Olympic Games.

Federer achieved many more positive results in his career, but I have referred to a sample, so that you can appreciate the greatness of his work.

If the above is not enough, he is the athlete who has won most times the Laureus Award for the Best Male Athlete in the World, which is like a kind of Oscar of American cinema.

A final thought.

September 23, 2022 was Roger Federer's last game as a professional tennis player and he did it playing a doubles match at the Lover Cup. Who did he choose as his playing partner? His fiercest rival: Rafael Nadal, who is also his friend.

I was shocked to see Nadal's tears when the match ended and to know that his eternal opponent would never again play against him in a professional tournament. This shows that sport develops values that make us better human beings, that it fosters interpersonal relationships and that it is important to win, but what sport in general leaves you with and nourishes, goes far beyond triumphs and medals.

What Nadal said at the end of the match ratifies the above: "When Roger Federer leaves, a part of my life also leaves".

Me gustó mucho tu reseña. Buen trabajo.

Saludos!

Salud y saludos.
