Marine life is so vast and so diverse that it is said that we know more about space than our own oceans.
Not surprisingly, the oceans are huge and difficult to explore, so there are many creatures out there that we don't know about, there may even be monsters that we have never seen, even with the best exploration equipment.
Thinking about that, I was inspired by two creatures that for a long time were considered sea monsters or even mythological creatures, such as the sperm whale (think Moby Dick) and the giant squid (a creature with great possibilities of existing).
La vida marina es tan amplia y tan diversa que se dice que conocemos más del espacio que de nuestros propios océanos.
No es para sorprenderse, los océanos son enormes y son difíciles se explorar, por lo que hay muchas criaturas por allí que no conocemos, incluso puede haber monstruos que nunca hemos visto, ni siquiera con los mejores equipos de exploración.
Pensando en eso, me inspiré en dos criaturas que por mucho tiempo fueron considerados monstruos marinos o incluso criaturas mitológicas, como lo son el cachalote (Piensen en Moby Dick) y el calamar gigante (criatura con grandes posibilidades de que exista).
Step by step
Well, these were the two sea creatures I made and I would like to share with you the creative process of these two works.
Materials and tools:
- Plasticine
- Paint
- Wire
- Silicone
- Sewing and knitting needle
- Tweezers
- Lighter
- Blade
- Brushes
Paso a paso
Pues bien, estas fueron las dos criaturas marinas que hice y me gustaría compartir con ustedes el proceso creativo de estas dos obras.
Materiales y herramientas:

- Encendedor
- Hojilla
- Pinceles
Giant squid
With the squid I wanted to take some creative liberties and make a monster as such, rather than a giant squid. So it is not the same as a giant squid, but something like this.
To start with I made the skeleton out of wire. It's plasticine, so I would need the skeleton to hold the shape. It's eight tentacles so I had to glue eight wires for each tentacle.
"Calamar" gigante
Con el calamar quise tomarme ciertas libertades creativas y hacer un monstruo como tal, más que un calamar gigante. Por eso no es igual a un calamar gigante, sino algo parecido a esto.
Para empezar hice el esqueleto de alambre. Es plastilina, así que necesitaría el esqueleto para mantener la forma. Son ocho tentáculos así que tuve que pegar ocho alambres para cada tentáculo.

To create the plasticine that I would use as a base color, I mixed green, purple and red, so I obtained this kind of brown with which I would mold the body of the "squid".
Para crear la plastilina que usaría como color base mezclé el color verde, morado y rojo, así obtuve esta suerte de marrón con la que moldearía el cuerpo del "calamar".
This skeleton was quite strong, but I also used a copper wire, which would allow me to create a monster with movable tentacles, that is, some of the tentacles could move even after they were covered with plasticine.
Here below you can see how I started to cover the skeleton with brown plasticine.
Este esqueleto quedó bastante resistente, pero también usé un alambre de cobre, lo que me permitiría crear un monstruo con tentáculos móviles, es decir, que algunos de los tentáculos podrían moverse aún después de que estuviesen cubiertos de plastilina.
Aquí abajo pueden ver cómo comencé a cubrir el esqueleto con plastilina marrón.

The head of this squid/octopus/sea monster has a shape similar to a thumb, so that was the base shape I followed and from this I continued molding.
In the middle of this "thumb" I made a bulge where the eyes would be.
La cabeza de este calamar/pulpo/monstruo marino tiene una forma parecida a un pulgar, así que esa fue la forma base que seguí y a partir de esta continué moldeando.
En medio de este "pulgar" hice una protuberancia donde estarían los ojos.

The tentacles were also covered with plasticine, as well as the inner part of the tentacles, that is, where the creature's mouth is.
Below you can see this process, including the finished tentacles covered with plasticine.
Los tentáculos también los cubrí con plastilina, al igual que la parte interior de los mismos tentáculos, es decir, donde tiene la boca esta criatura.
Abajo pueden ver este proceso, incluso los tentáculos terminados y cubiertos de plastilina.

I gave the bee a semi-pointed shape, as if it were the abdomen of a bee. I made horizontal lines with the knitting needle and other even thinner lines with the fine sewing needle, this to give it a somewhat grotesque appearance.
I also did some relief and texture to the rest of the skin. The intention is not to make it look cute, but quite the opposite.
A la abeja le di una forma semi puntiaguda, como si fuese el abdomen de una abeja. Le hice líneas horizontales con la aguja de tejer y otras líneas aún más delgada con la aguja fina de coser, esto para darle una apariencia un tanto grotesca.
También le hice cierto relieve y textura al resto de la piel. La intención no es que parezca lindo, sino todo lo contrario.

For the mouth I made a hole between the tentacles. I used pink plasticine and introduced it into the hole, then I made another hole and with the tip of the needle I gave it texture.
Note that at this point it looks like something very different from a mouth, but it will take shape, patience.
Para la boca hice un agujero entre los tentáculos. Usé plastilina rosa y la introduje en el agujero, luego le hice otro agujero y con la punta de la propia aguja le di textura.
Notese que en este punto parece algo muy distinto a una boca, pero ya irá tomando forma, paciencia.

It is only a matter of placing the teeth around the mouth and a hidden beak inside. A squid doesn't have a mouth like that, but I told you it's a sea monster.
Solo es cuestión de colocar los dientes alrededor de la boca y un pico oculto en el interior. Un calamar no tiene así la boca, pero ya les dije que es un monstruo marino.
For the lower part of the tentacles I made several strips of pink plasticine, which I glued on each tentacle to make something similar to the suction cups they usually have, only here I made holes.
Para la parte inferior de los tentáculos hice varias tiras de plastilina rosa, las cuales pegué en cada tentáculo para hacer algo similar a las ventosas que suelen tener, solo que aquí hice agujeros.

Here you can see how the mouth with the tentacles is getting.

After that I put the eyes in place, then I put eyelids around the eyes and fins around the head, something squid have.
Después de esto coloqué los ojos en su lugar, luego les coloqué párpados alrededor de los ojos y unas aletas alrededor de la cabeza, algo que los calamares tienen.

This is how this sea monster made only with plasticine turned out. However, my intention was to paint it and give it some different touches.
Así quedó este monstruo marino hecho solamente con plastilina. Sin embargo mi intención era pintarlo y darle unos toques algo distintos.
In the two images below you can see on the left that I painted with red and orange the inner part of the tentacles and the mouth. On the right, on the other hand, you can see the different shades I gave to the skin of the creature, from white to black.
I even painted the eyes completely black, as it seemed more threatening.
En las dos imágenes a continuación pueden ver a la izquierda que pinté con rojo y naranja la parte interna de los tentáculos y la boca. A la derecha, por otra parte, se aprecian las distintas tonalidades que le di a la piel de la criatura, desde blanco hasta negro.
Incluso los ojos los pinté totalmente de negro, pues así me parecía más amenazante.

Cachalot
The cachalot is a much more familiar sea creature that we can all become a little more familiar with.
So I gave it a more common appearance, true to what a cachalot looks like in real life.
Notice that I used wire and paper to make it. In the image on the left you can see the shape of the skeleton. In the image on the right you can see how I covered the skeleton with paper and then with black tape, the kind used for electricity.

El cachalote es una criatura marina mucho más conocida con la que todos nos podemos familiarizar un poco más.
Por esto le di una apaiencia más común, fiel a como es un cachalote en la vida real.
Fíjense que para hacerlo Usé alambre y papel. En la imagen de la izquierda se ve la forma del esqueleto. En la imagen de la derecha se ve cómo cubrí ese esqueleto con papel y luego con cinta negra, de la que se usa para electricidad.

All the black support that you saw above I covered with gray plasticine. It is not the same plasticine I used for the squid.
Notice that in the image below you can see that there is a line of plasticine sticking out, well, that is the mouth of the cachalot
Todo el soporte negro que vieron más arriba lo cubrí con plastilina gris. No es la misma plastilina que usé para el calamar.
Fíjense que en la imagen de abajo se ve que hay una línea de plastilina que sobresale, pues bien, esa es la boca del cachalote.
To give it a correct shape, I had to make a slit in the upper part, the same size as the lower part of the mouth.
You can also see in the pictures below that I made the eyes, which are really small compared to the size of the animal.
Something very important is to try to shape the animal's own muscles.
Para darle una forma correcta, le tuve que hacer una hendidura en la parte superior, del mismo tamaño que la parte inferior de la boca.
También pueden ver en las imágenes de abajo que le hice los ojos, unos realmente pequeños si se compara con el tamaño del animal.
Algo muy importante es tratar de darle forma a los propios músculos del animal.

The cachalot has a series of teeth that can be seen when he opens his mouth, so I had to make them for him.
Because of the size of these teeth, I had to make a line of white plasticine around this lower part of the mouth and then "cut" it with the tip of the thin sewing needle, this allowed me to give it the sharp, close-together teeth that the whale has.
El cachalote tiene una serie de dientes que se pueden ver cuando abre su boca, así que debía hacerselos.
Por el tamaño de estos dientes, tuve que hacer una línea de plastilina blanca que todeara esta parte inferior de la boca y luego "cortarla" con la punta de la delgada aguja de coser, esto me permitió darle esa forma de dientes afilados y juntos que tiene la ballena.
The next step was to give the correct shape to the tail, the two horizontal fins it has. I did not put any support on them, as these would rest on the surface on which the cachalot is placed.
Lo siguiente fue darle la forma correcta a la cola, la dos aletas horizontales que tiene. No les coloqué soporte, pues estas reposarían sobre la superficie en la cual se coloque al cachalote.
The last thing was the fins, some lines on the jaw and the characteristic hump that these whales have on the back.

Lo último fue las aletas, algunas líneas en la mandíbula y la característica joroba que estas ballenas tienen en el lomo.

Finally, I did the same thing I did with the squid I showed you above, paint the cachalot.
You see, with the tip of the needle, I made multiple lines along its body, which are a sign of the countless fights this whale has had.
By giving it a first coat of white, the marks I made with the needle would remain white.
Por último, hice lo mismo que hice con el calamar que les mostré arriba, pintar al cachalote.
Verán, con la punta de la aguja, le hice múltiples líneas a lo largo de su cuerpo, las cuales son señal de las incontables luchas que esta ballena ha tenido.
Al darle una primera capa de blanco, las marcas que hice con la aguja quedarían blancas.
Thus, when I darkened a little the whale's body with white paint, using the dry brush technique, you can clearly see the white lines and a quite interesting relief on the body of this cetacean.
De este modo, cuando oscurecí un poco el cuerpo de la ballena con pintura blanca, usando la técnica del pincel seco, se ven cláramente las líneas blancas y un relieve bastante interesante en el cuerpo de este cetáceo.
Final result
In this way the two creatures were finished, below I leave a series of photographs of the finished giant "squid".

I also leave you a series of pictures of the whale, which I must admit is the one I liked the most of the two. You will also have your favorite, but I liked this cachalot better.

Finally, I completed the diorama of these two sea creatures facing each other.
The cachalot usually eats squid, so it is not unreasonable for these two sea creatures to clash.
