Serigraphy printing or my failing attempt of trying for the sake of it

in DIYHublast year

Serigraphy. Another absolutely beautiful creative work process.

You place the screen on the fabric.

Pour the paint onto it.

And while you drag the paint over the screen, you could barely hold back the excitement, just a few moments from discovering what you just printed on the fabric.

You lift up the screen and discover perfectly clean lines.

A thin layer of paint.

A subject created by you, looking as if it had always been there.

Pure and perfect.

The lines and shapes. The colour.

Meanwhile I am amazed by the process, I am unable to just try out. Have fun without an idea. Just freely try out. It bores me. Taking photos of the process didn't bore me though:)

First, I choose brown.

Little deviation about the colour brown.

I treat colours I don’t like the same as foods I don’t enjoy eating. Strangely I am having fun trying them as long as it takes me to sort of appreciate them.

Example?

Dried tomatoes. I used to hate dried tomatoes. Until we went on a school excursion to Italy in my high school years. My Italian teacher stole a handful of dried tomatoes from a stall of a marked (was his hometown, I imagine he used to play games in the same market as a kid). He proposed them to us. I wasn’t going to refuse dried tomatoes stolen by my Italian teacher, how could I?
Since then, I love dried tomatoes. Would mix them into pretty much any savory dish.

Same story with purple. After using it as paint or in clothing over and over again, I still don’t quite like it too much. But I do not hate purple anymore.
And even wear it for fun sometimes.

The next round goes to the colour brown.

Whenever I encounter paint (in tubes or jars even pens), there is eighter no brown and you have to mix it yourself, and I never remember how. But if there is, it is usually very bland and boring. Maybe that’s why I have problems with it. I forget how many options there are from caramel to pastel brown or autumn leave gold orange…

That’s why I was trying serigraphy printing with brown.

First it went oke. Just some random lines.

I discovered gold and was distracted.

How cheap is this to still get so distracted by this shiny colour?
Just has to be shiny and I am off with it.

I guess that is the effect "having too many choices" does to me.

I realized that gold looks better as paint and not on the fabric, obviously.

Stripes?

Further I thought it would be fun to use some tape, to spare parts of the fabric from the paint.

Eventually I got very frustrated and uninspired.

Maybe it is also oke not to be in the mood to just try out things without a plan. Maybe it is also just a thing I am not very good at. Yes, I want everything to be perfect at the first round. Meanwhile I am willing to fix about anything on a project gone wrong, if I am really into it.
Probably the trying-for-the-sake-of-it project is just not what I am really into.
Or at least not, if I don’t see the big picture at its end.

But then I pulled off the tape.

And there my inspiration came back. When I was looking at the tape, the rubbish I saw more beauty than in the result of a few hours of printing.

Again, I went back to my theme.

Recycling, upcycling, rubbish.

Rubbish is beautiful.

Thank you all for your visit, appreciate it:) Have a lovely weekend!!

I like the way you approach things you don't like. So funny about the dried tomatoes.

Do you have a favourite colour, or more than one favourite?

Eventually I got very frustrated and uninspired.

Been there, so familiar it made me laugh.

I love the tape. It looks like a sculpture by itself. Things like that always fascinate me.

Wonderful post, delightful to read and the way you set up your photos of your process. You like to take them in process. I have no patience for doing that. Yours are beautiful.

...I was thinking of you, at the tape stage, and about the beauty of rubbish:)

hmmm I would say I do turn quite towards some sort of gold-brown lately, then I loove rust-reds, but also blues, more into warm colours I would say. But its also not really possible to choose.
I love green for example but rather in nature than in other places or on things...

Ooh I used to be the shittiest person about taking process photos!! Never did it, but kind of wanted to get into it, so I started forcing myself and turned out loving it:)

and thank you😊

You're welcome! 😊

...I was thinking of you, at the tape stage, and about the beauty of rubbish:)

Aw, thanks, it's a wonderful thing to see the world this way, to notice such things.

ut its also not really possible to choose.

It is and it depends on context, such as what you've said about green.

LOL about taking process photos. What a thing you've done, a complete turn around! That's inspiring. I'll have to try forcing myself, since I do that already about other things. 😂

...I recommend forcing it🙃
what helped was actually getting a phone that does take decent photos, so you dont really have an excuse not to!
I dont know about you but I would also regret every time not to have taken photos of the process. Same with traveling or moments, neeva manage to take pictures...

...I recommend forcing it🙃

Hahaha! I have to say, seeing all your photos is really inspiring me to do that. Your in process photos look like art, for goodness sakes! 😁That's lovely. I'll give it a try with my phone. I'm just not used to using it for photos.

I dont know about you but I would also regret every time not to have taken photos of the process.

I have never regretted it. I'm not sure why. I used to have to do a lot of it when I was carving sculptures professionally, so maybe some burnout from years of that. I don't have most of those images anymore due to various computer malfunctions and no backup of most. I had to let that go, so maybe that's another reason why it doesn't matter to me to document in process. Also, I have always found it disruptive to the flow of my creative process.

Same with traveling or moments

This is something I don't like to miss and wish I'd taken photos of so much that I did not.

I'll watch out for them😊

...ah yes I also never liked it when people requested me too, or like in school.. but now nobody asks me to so I became comfortable with it😉

I'll watch out for them😊

😂I'm considering how I will approach this for over a week, seeing it in my mind first.

That's excellent. I don't get asked now either for a while. I always like to make some gifts for friends, but it's not something they ask for.

You are very welcome, and thanks to you too for the support!!🙃

That's a pretty neat process. I like how you broke the rules and made it your own.

I get bored and distracted by other things pretty easy, too. The shinier, the more distracting!

Thank you!!
Hahah I am glad I am not the only one:))

In love with everything that comes in earthy colors!

Are those freshly baked stripes for the brownish leggings you mentioned?

freshly baked stripes

😂😂

not yet, there was a plan there but I messed it up...
...so another brown fabric without stripes, and if I manage to take photos today you might see them soon:)
I think ill go for the in-the-woods colour palette too:)

Eyes wide open for this one!

Messed up, is there such a thing?:D

Messed up, is there such a thing?:D

...Ill rescue it a bit later I think:)

I loved your creative process and your spontaneity to show it. Sometimes we start with something and as we keep going we get unimaginable results.

...glad you enjoyed it, we'll see how it turns out next time:)

i am so much in love with silkscreen printing.
!PIZZA

🙃 beautiful process isn't it, Thank you!

I tried it myself once, and become in love with it. Its a total opposite to digital. Totally 'analogue', which is the best part to me! 🤩

it is for sure awesome to work with analogue techniques!! even just from time to time:)
