Acapulco memories melon smoothie with a spice kick

DSC_1966.jpg

This week for the Amazing Drink community we have a contest theme of Super Smoothie. Thanks to @sirenahippie we can think of ways to make nourishing and fun drinks.

Thanks for the invitation @roronoa46!

My go to smoothie is usually green. We don't really have great fruits here and when they're good they are expensive.

I haven't had much fruit lately. I realized because of the smoothie theme, it was time to get some fruits and forfeit the usual green one.

The smoothie I have made, may seem unusual to the average Canadian, because of the addition of cayenne pepper and salt.

This is a tribute to Mexican fruits eaten most commonly with chili salt and lime. I have switched the chili for cayenne pepper which is very good for the heart and digestion. I have turned my favourite way of eating fruits into a smoothie.

The flavors include, sweet, acid, spice and salt. Of course if someone were not wanting to consume too much salt, it would still be good without. Same goes for the cayenne. I wouldn't omit either.

The main liquid of the smoothie is coming from watermelon and cantaloupe. These are imported and quite expensive. They are worth it for the taste along with the minerals and water content to carry the minerals through the body. I love the hydration they provide.

In addition I have added kiwis which I don't consume very often but I do like them. They say that kiwis have more vitamin C in them then oranges. The tartness along with the citrus balance out the sweetness of the melon and the agave nectar. I have also added strawberries. They are getting more plentiful and tasting much better these days.

My blender is not big but it does a good job. I added the melon to make a liquid first. This made it easier to blend the cashews.

Once the melons were blended I added the juice from the lime and orange. Then I added the strawberries which were washed with filtered water.I added the kiwi along with them.

Untitled-4.jpg

All of the fruits were chilled in the refrigerator except for the cashews. They were soaked overnight then frozen. I wanted my smoothie cold.

The cashews were added as an emulsifier, otherwise it would not be smooth like a smoothie. It worked well.

Untitled-5.jpg

After adding the frozen soaked cashews, I added the mint, cayenne salt and an ice cube.

Untitled-7.jpg

The mint was something I added for a little cooling for the cayenne. I like mint with melon and lime. For me it's the taste of Acapulco Mexico and brings me memories of one of my other homes.

Untitled-8.jpg

After blending I adjusted the flavors to suit my taste which was a little more agave, lime and cayenne. This cayenne had very little heat. The agave nectar is my favourite sweetener. Agave has a lower glycaemic level then sugar. It's also vegan. I use only what is labelled as raw, even though raw foodies will say that it is not, because it requires heat to process. I am not getting into that. For me it's one of the lesser evils. Don't get me wrong I do use cane sugar for certain things.

This was the first time I used frozen cashews for a smoothie. I'm quite impressed with how it becomes naturally creamy when blended.

2 cups watermelon
2 cups cantaloupe or musk melon
8 strawberries
2 kiwis
Juice of 1 orange
Juice of one lime
1 cup soaked cashews frozen
3 tablespoons agave or to your liking
Mint leaves around 10
Cayenne pepper to your liking
Salt to your liking (optional)

I may be too late to make an invite but I will see if I get lucky and catch @lizelle over in her vegetation filled part of the woods. She still has some crunch time. I actually may be too late as well.

Thanks for dropping by and have a great day.

Here's a different smoothie idea than usual. I love spicy and almost all the dishes I cook are spicy. But for smoothies combined with fruit, this is the first time I've seen it spicy, and it looks tempting. I have to try it.

In Mexico and Thailand they put chili on fruit, and a smoothie is like liquid fruit. You should try it you will like it, but the lime and salt is what makes it in my opinion.😊

I will definitely give it a try as it sounds great to me who is a smoothie lover.

Hello @carolynstahl!

What a wonderful drink you have brought! And as always, your posts are great, you always share part of your personal memories with us, that's great.

I'm sorry that fruits are so expensive there, I suppose it's because of transportation and storage, since fruits generally have a relatively short shelf life; However, I see that you got a delicious melon and an exquisite watermelon, which combine very well.

That tip of soaking and then freezing the cashews, that's great, I'll keep it in mind.

On the other hand, the use of spices takes the recipe to another level, I'm sure it turned out delicious.

And well, the sweetener issue is relative, and you don't have to worry about it. Sometimes the purists or orthodox make life more complicated. The use of agave nectar is great, as is the use of cane molasses, both are natural products, and generally artisanal, not industrial.

Great entry to the community contest, and you were on time, there were still a few hours left to finish the contest.

Thanks for your participation.

Oh I really appreciate your support on this. Especially the sugar part. I am by all means not a purist but do things to suit my own needs at the time that I need it. I can easily consume some refined foods if I'm feeling it. In fact I feel like it right now.😂

Thanks for your opportunity to inspire myself to eat more fruit. Also thanks for your nice words. Best wishes.😊

Its looks delicious ...😋😋😋😋

Thank you so much.😊

Wow, such an interesting drink. I think if I can taste it I would like it since I love every fruit you used especially your added melon which is one of my favorite ingredients when it comes to smoothies but I wonder what it tastes like with cayenne. 😊

Fruit with chili is popular in many places. It's worth a try if you like spicy food. Thank you for your visit.😊

Thank you very much!

Your smoothie is such an interesting combination of delicious fruit.
Watermelon is plentiful here at the moment, sweet and so juicy! The addition of Cayenne pepper and salt can only be a Carolyn touch, but I can imagine the little spiciness worked well.
Salt definitely brings out the flavour in all food, even just a pinch of it to sweet dishes as well.
Thank you for the invite, I have some nice bananas, just hope I still have time! But that won't stop me from making a smoothie and sharing it here.
Hmmm, it's time for breakfast, I popped some diced bananas into the freezer as soon as I saw your post, so I hope it's frozen in time.

Really if you were in Mexico it would be strange not to add the chili and salt to those kind of fruits. Blended would be a different story but at the end it tastes the same.

I guess it was kind of late for you but hopefully you can share some of your amazing drinks in this community.😊

I saw afterwards that it was way too late but I'm definitely going to share some amazing drinks in that community so thanks for the introduction my friend 🤗

I love chili in mango smoothies... works so good so I bet it will taste just fine in your yummy looking creation. Here in Cambodia most people eat their fruits slightly unripe combined with a chili salt and sugar mix. Have a beautiful day 💚

Chili and mango is the best. I wish we could get mangoes for less than they are right now. Actually you just reminded me of making a green mango salad yes!

Thanks to you and a good day as well.😊

Oh, it looks so creamy! I love all the ingredients you've used in your smoothie. Melon and watermelon are super cheap here and abundant, whereas strawberries are expensive and kiwis, super expensive. Cashew nuts make delicious smoothies; I'd thought about using them for my smoothie, but I wasn't sure they would go well with the rest of the ingredients I had in my fridge.

Cayenne pepper in my smoothie! The taste must be amazing.

I hope you enjoyed that smooth piece of Acapulco dreaming. Cheers, my friend 💚🌿

In Mexico most people would not dream of having these fruits without chili and salt. I don't know if they would feel the same if it were blended. The melons are not in season right now so they are costly but the vendor I go to has good fruit for a price. I have to start looking for a job if I want to eat fruit in Canada.😄

Have a great day my friend and enjoy your lovely warm country. It's -4C again here.😄

I loved your recipe, it is an explosion of flavors, you look very pretty friend, congratulations, have a nice day

Oh that's very kind and lovely of you to say. Much appreciation best wishes.😊

We don't have many fruits here that are good. Everything right now is imported. In summer we have a small variety. I would like to live where you are.

Thanks again for the invitation and your support.😊

I was in Bali in 2020 but I don't think you are there. Perhaps one day. 😊
