Refreshing Smoothie: Orange, Pineapple, Coconut Water & Ginger

in Amazing Drinks10 months ago

Hi, foodies in the Hive!

Which fruits cool you down on a hot day?

image.png

It's raining as I'm writing this post, and that must be one of the many meanings of a blessing. Last Sunday, We had 37 degrees (Celsius) with a heat sensation of over 42, coupled with an incandescent sun and a weak and hot breeze. Yesterday I didn't feel like doing anything because the heat made me so lazy. But now our plants are overjoyed and so are we 😁 Energies, recharging...

After a week of hard work, we're taking it easy and have gone to the beach a couple of times and have had a variety of interesting smoothies and frappés to cool our bodies down. Today I want to share with you the recipe for one of those smoothies; although you might be right if you think it's more like a frappé.

It all started with some overripe oranges on the kitchen table. I thought I'd make some juice like my mother used to make it.

image.png

We were a family of eight living in a hot city and there was only one refrigerator in our kitchen, so we could never store enough fruit. If we left the fruit outside, the heat would spoil them in a day or two. Like any mother of six, I guess, my mother was a resourceful woman; she came up with a couple of tricks of her own inspiration to handle our family's food contingencies. Among those cooking hacks was her recipe for creamy orange juice; you could make a lot of juice with only a few oranges.

To make creamy orange juice, she removed only the outer skin of the orange and the seeds; everything else went into the blender with some water, lots of ice and a little sugar.

image.png

It was a hearty and refreshing juice, plus you could make juice for 8 with 6 oranges. Today I wanted to make it, but sometimes my hands seem to have a mind of their own, and so I started picking up ingredients here and there.

Finally, and after I was sure I was using the oldest ingredients in my kitchen, I made an orange, pineapple, and ginger smoothie with Malay Apple flowers.

image.png

Below are listed the ingredients I finally got to use.

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups orange
  • 1 cup frozen coconut water
  • 4 tablespoons ginger
  • 1 cup frozen pineaple
  • 4 tablespoons petals from Malay apple flowers
  • Ice to taste if needed--I needed it.

The thing is that economy comes first most of the time; I try to use what I already have before it's too late. Right in that moment, the flowers of our Malay apple tree were begining to die; it was time to use some in the kitchen while they were good. I picked some--used some for the smoothie and some for coleslaw.

image.png

They taste great, like pommegranates mixed with concord grapes. It's an exotic and pleasant flavor, excellent for vegetable and fruit salads.

It's funny how the ingredients of your food and drink end up in your menu. The day before, Paco had chosen to sacrifice the pineapple that was next to the oranges, so I had to use it; I peeled it, cut it into little pieces and stored it in the freezer. Sometimes Paco is like that; he kills fruit he won't eat 😒

image.png

Making the Smoothie

I picked up all the old and almost dry oranges left on the kitchen table and let them soak in water for half an hour: this way their peel would hydrate and would be easier to remove. Some fruits come back to life if you soak them in water.

image.png

After that, Iwashed them well, removed the outer peel and seeds and cut them into pieces. The ones which wouldn't go into the blender would be eaten anyway. Vitamin C is on fashion.

image.png

Then I took a ginger root, peeled it and cut it into little pieces.

image.png

Once I had added the oranges, I added the frozen coconut water, and the ginger root.

image.png

Once in the blender, the frozen coconut water is easily broken into small pieces with a pointed knife. Just be careful not to go too deep so as not to damage the blades.

image.png

Then I added the frozen pineapple.

image.png

...And let the blender do its job.

image.png

I'm telling you, the heat was intense. My smoothie was becoming liquid, as the frozen fruit was losing its coldness very quickly. I had to add some ice cubes and blend again to restore the texture; that's why could argue that this smoothie is half frappé 😁

image.png

I cut some Malay apple flower petals and put them in the bottom of each glass.

image.png

Then I poured the smoothie.

It was refreshing!!! One tip for super refreshing drinks: Never add sugar; while sugar may enhance the taste of your #amazinhdrink, it also makes you thirsty.

I was really happy to have added ginger; it made the aftertaste stay longer and this somehow made the experience more refreshing.

Also, the coconut water added natural sweet. Super pleasant.

Needless to say oranges and pineapples are a good source of vitamin C, great for our immune system.

Refreshing, refreshing...

Well, another thing that could help with all these diseases around. Also, the perfect thing for such a hot weather. I like the addition of the flower as garnish. It certainly gives it an even more tropical vibe to this smoothie.

This heat is killing me. It was close to unbearable last Sunday. We've been adding ice to our afternoon coffee. Refreshing smoothies help a lot, and loaded with vitamin C as an extra, they are just great to fight the flu.

I didn't know these flowers were edible until a couple of years ago. They are really delicious, and they make food take on an exotic air. Love them 😁

Big hug, my dear friend. Thank you so much for dropping by ❤️

I feel like I want to live somewhere else, then remember I'm basically broke and it fades away. Ha, ha, ha. At this point, I might try to get inside the freezer to fight the heat.

I ate a lot of those flowers when I was younger. They taste funny.

It always a pleasure to drop by on these amazing recipes. ❤️

Send you a big hug.

Ah, the freezer. I'd wish I could fit.

Ha, ha, ha. We have a big one.

This post is great @marlyncabrera! It is always so nice to know part of the personal history of each user, and you have given us part of your family memories, thank you very much, we really appreciate it.

Now I'm amazed at the use of Malay apple blossoms, I've never eaten them, I'll have to find someone who has a tree near of my house, it must taste great.

And the idea that your mom had to make this creamy juice is great.

Thank you very much for choosing the Amazing Drinks community to share your great content. Greetings.

Thank you so much for dropping by, dear @sirenahippie 😁❤️

Malay apple trees are popular around here. There are many in my neighborhood. We have one in the backyard; it's old and generous. Its flowers' taste is like a mix of pomegranate and concord grapes, great for salads. I didn't know they were edible until a couple of years ago. Besides, they are beautiful.

I don't know how hot is the weather in your town, but here we need tons of refreshing smoothies. May the weather be gentle around there. Cheers! 🥤❤️

Your drink ingredients are indeed healthy and refreshing. I often use pineapple, orange, and ginger.

Hi! Water apples are the same. In Venezuela, we call them pomalacas, and this is the variety that you'll find in many houses around here:

I love ginger in hot tea, with lemon. I discovered it was delicious in cold drinks recently.

Cheers, @anggreklestari! Thank you so much for dropping by 🥤😁❤️

I have heard about the temperature increase in Cumana and the best advice is to stay hydrated. This smoothie or, better yet, frapé is ideal for cooling off, it looks delicious. I also like the flavor of ginger in smoothies, in the one I make green in the mornings I put a little bit and it is a delight. Thanks for sharing this recipe, my friend. Greetings, take care of yourselves, a hug.

The heat! The Heat is on! Ha ha ha ha... Uff! You know what is like, right? Only this time it's a little worse. Loveyour smoothies, dear @aurodivys 🖤 Thanks a lot for dropping by. Cheers!

Oh wow! I was so thirsty while looking at your post. I asked Marc to quickly bring me cold water. This is the only beverage we have. I would give anything for your juicy sweet and tangy drink on ice.

The Malay apple tree is heavenly. I wish I could see such a beautiful thing.

This post is like a wonderful dream with sweet fruits and Paco. I just wish I had a juicy drink like that right now.

Thanks for sharing my friend. Hugs and best wishes. Can you squeeze Paco for me and a kiss on the beak?

Water is the best, but one likes to get creative, I guess, hehehe.

Paco sends you a kiss. He's going through a phase; we let him be. He likes to spend the day walking around, like a dog, a mischievous one. It's funny 🤫

Big hug, my friend, and thank you so much for dropping by ❤️

¡Salud! 🥤💕

oh, this is much too pretty to drink! 😁
Bravo for how you did this, and thanks for sharing the idea! 💛

Aw, you're too kind!💕 Thank you so much for your nice compliments. With a heat sensation of 42-43°C, I'm sure you wouldn't have noticed the garnish 😂

Cheers, @thekittygirl 🥤🌸

The orange smoothie looks so refreshing and hearty! Might try this recipe out soon I'd love to try it. 👌🥳

Oh, it is a hearty drink indeed. I hope you can try making orange juice like this and may it refresh you 100% on a hot day!

Thank you so much for dropping by, @stephyymullen 😁💕 Cheers!

This drink is very healthy and can be found in my area @marlyncabrera

Indeed! I know. There's much in common between Indonesia and Venezuela. Cheers, @maytom 🥤💕

Salud 🥤💕

When it's hot I like to drink watermelon juice and sometimes cantaloupe juice, but the combination you made with orange, pineapple, coconut water and ginger is an explosion of flavors and the presentation looks super refreshing. The touch you gave it with the Malay Apple Flowers was a luxurious ingredient. The fruit salads must look super eye-catching with these exotic flowers.

Cheers to Paco who adorns the fruits with his cute pose. 🦜😍Hehe!

Greetings, my dear @marlyncabrera

Hi, @zupasteleria! The heat has been difficult to handle. Until now smoothies with frozen fruit, frozen coffee, frozen coconut water, etc... had been a solution to the high temperatures, but this day was so hot that the fruit started to lose its coldness immediately, as soon as I took it out of the freezer. I hope the weather changes soon so I can enjoy some delicious hot infusions.

Thank you so much for dropping by! 😁🖤
