Inside Out

The Japanese say you have three faces. The first face, you show to the world. The second face, you show to your close friends and family. The third face, you never show anyone. It is the truest reflection of who you are.

Words of wisdom, indeed.

Japanese or not, truth is universal and applies to all entities— honest or corrupted. It’s known to us all that honesty is the best policy, but do you have to be honest every time, every day? Probably not and being dishonest or adopting a little lie for the sake of the greater good is equally honest and legitimate.

If we all were honest, like literally, then there wouldn’t be any masks— we all could understand our true selves and show it to others. But as the Japanese quote above, our true reflection is always hidden unless it meets the worst-case scenario. And when it is revealed, which is evident at some points in our life, life gets a new start.

We all tell lies, it’s very common— be it over the phone or face to face, a little lie doesn’t hurt; as we believe. But a part of us dies every time we speak false, the good part— it slowly gets covered by the dark horror of negativity that eats us from inside. However, seasoned liars don’t have difficulties dealing with the falsehood they make every day, for that they have dedicated their life to earning this level of sophistication.

Although it gets revealed no matter how passionately liars try to coat it with sugar, but that doesn’t affect their regular lives. In fact, telling lies is an art— not everyone masters it. And surprisingly, they have like-minded companions to practice it further and refine it to the highest level possible. Both of them are aware of the masks they wear, still, then another layer of masks hides that just perfectly.

So to speak, human beings don’t live as a single entity, rather, they have a multitude of personalities and foster a common instinct of hiding the true self under a polished mask. Each personality is stacked purposefully and only comes out when the situation demands or the person inherits wishes so. Each of them is backed by a series of logical explanation that protects them when encountered with disagreement. It’s an acute tendency to defend our masks, no matter if they are blended well or falling through the crack without us noticing the changes over time.

It’s amazing how we, human beings inherit a fluid persona by birth. From our infancy to the last breath, sometimes we cry when it’s time to celebrate and vice versa. Fluidity is what makes our life more enjoyable. It also gives our life the variety it yearns for— being too straight doesn’t cut it right these days, neither it was in the past. The more we are advancing towards ecstasy, the more we are stepping closer to our abomination; the sublime truth of eternal existence. The ultimate sorcery of masking our inner self.

The human face is, after all, nothing more nor less than a mask.
— Agatha Christie

True, indeed!
