Availability In Place Of Capability

in BDCommunity4 years ago

There are about two types of help that comes to an individual: the regular help and the relevant help. At a point when you are in need of help and the relevant help is not forthcoming, you will discover that the regular help that you may have been neglecting will become the preferred option. This is why being capable is good but being available when needed is far better. Having expertise in something and not being available for the thing has already limited your relevance and someone that is readily available will be preferred over you.

While growing up, one of my friends belonged to a particular choral group and because he was still coming up in instrumentation, he was always benched anytime they were singing even though he was always available for practice. They would choose the professional among them who does not even come for rehearsals because of the nature of his job.

A point came when the professional was unavoidably absent and they had presentation to make. Guess what!! They discovered that the only option they had was right before them but they had not been looking at him because they preferred capability over availability. Well, my friend performed beyond expectations and wowed everyone.

Imagine if my friend had concluded himself as being irrelevant because he was benched, he may not even be around to provide help for them when they needed it the most. This is why I normally tell people not to look at others as "spare tyre". Put them through and give them opportunities to shine. Remember, even the professional began just like every other person and through constant practice and opportunities, he became better.

Try to value any help anyone offers to you no matter how small - because it will make him to do bigger and better the next time and a point may come when his help may be the only one you will fall back on. Believe me, no help is too small to be acknowledged. Someone may not be fully capable but if he is willing to learn and is available, then he is far better than someone that is capable but not available.

A collection of little and regular helps will make much impact than waiting to receive one relevant help. You can only know the abilities and capabilities of someone when he is available. Without availability, capability will be rendered functionally irrelevant. So do not sacrifice available hands in the hope to get capable hands. Work with the available hands and they will become capable.

Peace on y'all
