Twin Cities on edge

Boarded up (but open) Walmart in Maple Grove, an outer-ring suburb (almost exurb) of Mpls that I saw this morning. My son who lives in the city says it feels “surreal” being in a now-militarized community with a large National Guard presence.

Sort:

Walmarts in particular seem to be a target of choice for looting opportunists. Not every store is like this in Maple Grove. The National Guard has a presence, mostly in Minneapolis. In military gear with military rifles and military vehicles. But you can tell they have the discipline to obey their orders to a fucking T.

A couple even got shot at and didn't return fire. Can you imagine being deployed in your own state and getting shot at, in your truck, resulting in some glass shard injury? What if these guys even got deployed to Afghanistan or Iraq in the past, and never took shots, only to come home and serve in the NG only to get shot at in Minneapolis. Just crazy.

That is crazy.

I bet that region was especially at risk from looking and vandalism being situated where certain events and protests happened.

You would think that glass would be as cheap to install as wood and much better for the brand.

Our police have recently been given the right to stop people and demand reasoning for not being at home and having to provide their address. Does indeed feel surreal. I am just lucky I have a comfy couch and a full fridge as my punishment when most folks have it way worse!

Hope you are keeping well old friend.
