"Tatjana" - An Oil Pastel Portrait

I'm always bouncing between genres for the widest possible painting practice range, so today it's time for another portrait again. This is "Tatjana", who reminds me of a Russian girl I once knew, so I named her thus. In reality, this is painted after a stock photo by Alexandru Zdrobau.

In the oil pastel scene everybody harps on about how important the tooth of the paper is, to grab as much pigment as possible, so I used a rather rough, cold-pressed paper for this painting. I wish I hadn't! While it was O.K. to paint on, I feel this could have turned out better.

For my next portrait, I'll go in the other direction and use a very smooth Bristol paper to paint on. This rough paper I will try again with a landscape, for which it seems to be more suitable.
 

Da ich ständig zwischen den Genres hin- und her springe, um meine Malerei zu üben, ist es heute an der Zeit für ein weiteres Porträt. Dies ist "Tatjana", die mich an ein russisches Mädchen erinnert, das ich einmal kannte, also habe ich sie so genannt. In Wirklichkeit ist das Bild nach einem Archivfoto von Alexandru Zdrobau gemalt.

In der Ölpastell-Szene wird immer wieder betont, wie wichtig die kräftige Körnung des Papiers sei, um möglichst viel Pigment aufzunehmen, deshalb habe ich für dieses Gemälde ein eher raues, kaltgepresstes Papier verwendet. Ich wünschte, ich hätte es nicht getan! Es war zwar in Ordnung, darauf zu malen, aber ich denke, das Bild hätte besser werden können.

Für mein nächstes Porträt werde ich in die andere Richtung gehen und ein sehr glattes Bristolpapier zum Malen verwenden. Dieses raue Papier werde ich noch einmal mit einer Landschaft versuchen, für die es besser geeignet zu sein scheint.
