"Woodlands" - An Oil Pastel Painting

Today's landscape is loosely based on an original motif by American painter John William Hill (1812-1879). I'm experimenting a lot lately, to figure out where this oil pastel thing might lead me, and I'm grabbing inspiration where I can find it.

In order to slowly free myself from the need for reference photos, one of my exercises is, to look at a picture for a few seconds and then try painting the essence of it without looking at it again. In terms of oil pastels, this exercise works best by looking at existing paintings rather than photos, because a painting already reflects a simplified color palette, making it easier to retain and pick a limited number of oil pastel sticks accordingly.

I'm really impressed by the richness of colors and textures afforded by a handful of oil pastels when they are layered in certain ways. Never in a million years would I have thought this medium to be so versatile!

Mein heutiges Landschaftsbild basiert lose auf einem Originalmotiv des amerikanischen Malers John William Hill (1812-1879). Ich experimentiere in letzter Zeit viel, um herauszufinden, wohin mich diese Ölpastell-Sache führen könnte, und ich greife mir Inspiration, wo immer ich sie finden kann.

Um mich langsam von der Notwendigkeit von Referenzfotos zu befreien, besteht eine meiner Übungen darin, ein Bild ein paar Sekunden lang zu betrachten und dann zu versuchen, die Essenz des Bildes zu malen, ohne es noch einmal anzuschauen. Bei Ölpastellkreiden funktioniert diese Übung am besten, wenn man sich bestehende Gemälde und keine Fotos ansieht, denn ein Gemälde spiegelt bereits eine vereinfachte Farbpalette wider, welche einfacher erinnerlich ist. Damit ist es leichter, eine begrenzte Anzahl von Ölpastellstiften entsprechend auszuwählen.

Ich bin wirklich beeindruckt von dem Reichtum an Farben und Texturen, den eine Handvoll Ölpastellstifte bietet, wenn sie vernünftig geschichtet werden. Nie im Leben hätte ich gedacht, dass dieses Medium so vielseitig ist!
