Jazz hard bop: «On the Ginza» [ESP/ENG]

in Music2 years ago (edited)

The Jazz Messengers: Wayne Shorter (saxo tenor), Freddie Hubbard (trompeta), Curtis Fuller (trombón), Cedar Walton (piano), Reggie Workman (contrabajo) y Art Blakey (batería).

Hubbard left Blakey’s group in 1966 to set up his own bands. During the 1960s he appeared as a sideman on the most prominent albums of the time, and although he never fully embraced free jazz, he was featured on alto saxophonist and father of this style Ornette Coleman’s Free Jazz (1961) and tenor saxophonist John Coltrane’s Ascension (1966), which says a lot about a musician who learned to play his instrument by performing bebop. His best works as a leader during this period of his career include Ready for Freddie (1962), Backlash (1967) and The Hub of Hubbard (1969).

The rhythm section provides an introduction and then the rest of the group joins in to play the theme, which is intense and energetic. Soon Shorter enters with short sentences that he links masterfully. Hubbard follows scoring well the notes and including quick sections in his solo. Fuller appears next playing in a calm and quiet way, and then Walton arrives with a balanced and serene exposition. Finally the group restates the theme and ends it suddenly.
