SONG REQUEST 50% HP Challenge - Week 3 - Winner: @obaro with "Someone you Loved" by Lewis Capaldi!

in Music2 years ago

▶️ Watch on 3Speak

Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town, South Africa!

I have decided to start a challenging series of posts! BUT I Need your Help!

This is the challenge I'm setting myself every week: I ask for cover song requests on the MUSIC community, and then pick a favourite song to learn and post a live video of me attempting it. The person who asked for the winning song then gets 50% of the post rewards in HP!

Thanks to some great help from @eugelys, I received a lot of excellent requests! If I didn't get around to your request this week, please keep asking for it and there is a good chance it will win in the weeks to come!

So everyone from this week (@neruel @soldierofdreams @karelysk89 @obaro @elielkenobi @yisusth @itzchemaya @anna-newkey @sunsethunter @marelizezeeman @edwardstobia @jlinaresp @pixelhuntersam @naradamoon @zakludick @loadreaper @stevemuis @nickydee @itsostylish): Please keep trying with either the same request, or a different one, in the comments of this post?

There were also some songs that I would love to tackle with my singing and writing friend @clairemobey. When I see her again we will do some duets, or songs where she should sing lead, and share the posts and reward the people who requested those songs as well! This request challenge seems to be (hopefully) taking off!

Let's get to this week's winner!

This week's winner is @obaro with his request of "Someone you Loved" by Lewis Capaldi. What a fantastic song! I remember loving it when it was on the radio! You can view the original video here, with lyrics at the bottom of the post:

Now @obaro is from Nigeria, and he is a prolific songwriter himself, and is often using challenges like Three Tunes Tuesday and Hive Open Mic as prompts to write multiple new songs in a single week, which is amazing! He sings, plays guitar, piano and drums, so please follow him and give your support.

Last week I picked a second bonus song and rewarded the person who requested it with 20% of the post rewards in HP. There were so many wonderful requests this week that I cannot help doing that again! @marelizezeeman requested "Piano Man" by Billy Joel, without even knowing I play a bit of harmonica! Believe it or not, I never really play this song - but with a bit of transposing the key, maybe I should? You can view the original video here, with lyrics at the bottom of the post:

Now @marelizezeeman is also from Cape Town like me, but I have never met her - so hopefully giving her the bonus request doesn't feel like nepotism! I would like to meet her though, as she plays the violin wonderfully and it would be great if she did so with myself and @clairemobey for some videos on HIVE!

@marelizezeeman is also brand new to HIVE, but is already posting wonderful violin videos... as well as some mad stuff about running marathons... so please follow her and help her account grow!

NOW READER, perhaps next week is your turn? Please give me some suggestions of cover songs you would like me to try next week, and maybe you'll be the winner next time!

See you Next Week!

Lyrics for "Someone you Loved"

I'm going under and this time I fear there's no one to save me
This all or nothing really got a way of driving me crazy
I need somebody to heal
Somebody to know
Somebody to have
Somebody to hold
It's easy to say
But it's never the same
I guess I kinda liked the way you numbed all the pain
Now the day bleeds
Into nightfall
And you're not here
To get me through it all
I let my guard down
And then you pulled the rug
I was getting kinda used to being someone you loved
I'm going under and this time I fear there's no one to turn to
This all or nothing way of loving got me sleeping without you
Now, I need somebody to know
Somebody to heal
Somebody to have
Just to know how it feels
It's easy to say but it's never the same
I guess I kinda liked the way you helped me escape
Now the day bleeds
Into nightfall
And you're not here
To get me through it all
I let my guard down
And then you pulled the rug
I was getting kinda used to being someone you loved
And I tend to close my eyes when it hurts sometimes
I fall into your arms
I'll be safe in your sound 'til I come back around
For now the day bleeds
Into nightfall
And you're not here
To get me through it all
I let my guard down
And then you pulled the rug
I was getting kinda used to being someone you loved
But now the day bleeds
Into nightfall
And you're not here
To get me through it all
I let my guard down
And then you pulled the rug
I was getting kinda used to being someone you loved
I let my guard down
And then you pulled the rug
I was getting kinda used to being someone you loved

Lyrics for Piano Man

It's nine o'clock on a Saturday
The regular crowd shuffles in
There's an old man sittin' next to me
Makin' love to his tonic and gin
He says, "Son can you play me a memory?
I'm not really sure how it goes
But it's sad and it's sweet and I knew it complete
When I wore a younger man's clothes"
La, la-la, di-di-da
La-la di-di-da da-dum
Sing us a song, you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well, we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feelin' alright
Now John at the bar is a friend of mine
He gets me my drinks for free
And he's quick with a joke, or to light up your smoke
But there's some place that he'd rather be
He says, "Bill, I believe this is killing me"
As a smile ran away from his face
"Well, I'm sure that I could be a movie star
If I could get out of this place"
Oh, la, la-la, di-di-da
La-la di-di-da da-dum
Now Paul is a real estate novelist
Who never had time for a wife
And he's talkin' with Davy, who's still in the navy
And probably will be for life
And the waitress is practicing politics
As the businessmen slowly get stoned
Yes, they're sharing a drink they call loneliness
But it's better than drinkin' alone
Sing us the song, you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well, we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feelin' alright
It's a pretty good crowd for a Saturday
And the manager gives me a smile
'Cause he knows that it's me they've been comin' to see
To forget about life for a while
And the piano, it sounds like a carnival
And the microphone smells like a beer
And they sit at the bar and put bread in my jar
And say man what are you doin' here?
Oh, la, la-la, di-di-da
La-la di-di-da da-dum
Sing us the song, you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well, we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feelin' alright

Great song choice jasper that sounded great.
I wasn't sure if I could make the same request over multiple times. So yes I Would like to request this one again

Hahaha wow I still need to get my head around this one! Whether it can be simplified or if I need help to give it all that energy!

The show itself looks fun - what's the best way to watch it? The closest I have come to watching something like this (anime?) lately is RWBY by Roosterteeth, which I think you and @zakludick might enjoy? Their stuff is usually free if you can get through the adverts... I think they have made the first seasons easy to watch here:

https://roosterteeth.com/series/rwby-complete

Yes I know rwby it is one of my favourite anime. I've seen all 8 seasons so far the 9th one is actually being released at the moment it does also have a lot of very good songs as well

Yes, they made us wait two years for Season 9 so hopefully it's good!

I believe a lot of the music is made by a father-daughter team where the daughter does the singing - and it's fantastic! I actually found out about RWBY by reading a music-based webcomic years ago.

Have you heard his new one? How do I say goodbye?
Amazing cover. I adore your voice!!

Oh wow - I don't think I had heard that one before but I love it!

It's super emotional, you must see some of the videos he does where people are reacting to it.

Can you send us a link?

Whoops.. Wrong artist.. Lol

I think we're talking about this new song!

Oh...... Wow...... Well that's a tearjerker ❤️😥😥😥😥

I think the end of the video says the father got a stem cell transplant and is now in remission, and he played the song to his dad... hopefully things stay on the up for them.

But Julia and I have lost a good friend to cancer. Madison shares her middle name.

And very relevant

You did it! Piano man sounds great You should keep it in your repertoire. Thanks so much for shoutout in your video! Really appreciate it. I'm up for a collaboration with you and Claire and see what magic comes out of it:)

Well I assume you're a Northern suburbs person from the photo of you running in the Tableview area. Zak and Claire live roughly there and always seem keen to have a HIVER braai - I will stamp my passport at the Boerewors curtain and come join you! (Southern suburbs soutie here!)

I'm from the West Coast:) Parklands...definitely not from the northern suburbs:) Claire and I live very close I've heard from Zak😉

Ooh... I always tease that I cross the boerewors curtain when I go surfing that side! Hahaha!

But there is a big big line dividing Southern subs and the rest of Cape town:) you need padkos traveling this side.

Yes I either have to pack my boerewors to come surfing your side, my gatsby for the Muizenberg side, or my lentils and wooly hat to go surfing the Noordhoek-Kommetjie-Scarborough stretch... There's a lot of padkos and passport stamps in this great sprawling city!

😅 you are definitely an experienced traveler.

I figured as a new HIVER you would like to receive a few HP from this post, but you're starting to do great on your own lately - so this would be peanuts for you! Haha

Thanks Jasper! Every bit helps hey? I struggle to keep up with commenting and tracking who commented what , where and finding it again. Once I know the ins and outs I will return the favour for all the help and advice. Big learning curve bit love the writing and creative outlet.

Yes, I saw some comments on your hive open mic. Eugelys, mipiano, cabelinsay I think are all moderators who can help get your posts noticed by the big votes... But they also try make sure things are quality and original. I find it's better to listen to their advice.

Hehe, thanks @jasperdick

Indeed, we are moderators and try to advise and help users, ow, and yes, also bring some support hehe 😉

I will try to help @marelizezeeman how to keep track of comments.
If you use PeakD, you have a section called replies, there you can find the comments people made to you. As if many notifications, you can indeed be a bit lost (I was in the beginning lol)

Greetings my friend, I didn't know you had this initiative so I'm sorry I didn't ask for a song in the comments before!!!

I love the classics and more if they are romantic! So I invite you to make a version of the following song!!! It's titled "Without You" (Mariah Carey). Here is the link to the original song!

I must emphasize that your voice was magnificent, there were some detunes but it is normal because it also happens to me! Beautiful the quality of your sound! Congratulations for this version and congratulations to the winner of this week!!!

Blessings!

Thank you so much! Yes, when I have to learn a song and play it very soon after (I think this week it was about an hour later as I have been busy with work! Haha!) then I am bound to make the odd mistake!

I also find that if I worry too much about being perfect, then I lose a lot of emotion and confidence in the message of the song I am trying to portray... if that makes sense?

So I am doing this initiative as I want to give some HP back to the people who engage with me, but also because it is a really good challenge in learning songs fast... and not just the chords and melody, but also how the emotion is conveyed.

Oooh, great tune! I must learn this one!
I duet the following with a very dear friend.. so, here comes my request again for you to attempt:

Lady Gaga, Bradley Cooper - Shallow

This is a perfect example of something I would like to do with the help of @clairemobey when I get around to seeing her again! We will definitely tag you and make you a beneficiary when we do!

Wow!... It has become a real pleasure to listen to your interpretations my friend !!!!... Today your voice was masterful, eloquent, with superb clarity and fantastic modulation!.... BRAVO!!!!... How nice that you have come up with this initiative!... For heaven's sake, I almost fainted listening to your interpretation of Piano Man by B. Joel!!!!... A marvel!... Don't stop!!!...

I'm still determined to Kenny Rogers - The Gambler ;)

!PIZZA

Thank you my friend! Okay I see you really mean it - "The Gambler" is your choice!

It's beautiful to know that you chose my song selection.
If Lewis Capaldi were to see this, I'm sure he'll love it just as much as I did.
This is really awesome... Your baritone and the part you pitched is really awesome.

I won't stop doing music dear friend.... Thanks for the encouragement dear brother!..

This is so beautiful...
Have a great day brother.
@eugelys thanks once more for the mention.

Ah thank you for suggesting such a moving song! Don't stop making suggestions, there are no rules about that (yet) - haha!

Also, please help spread the word to other HIVERs you know who might also enjoy making song requests this week!

Aye Aye captain!

I'll invite others too!

I like the talent you have, your cover is really good, you have your own character

Hello! Thank you so much! I really appreciate it!

Would you like to suggest a song for me to try and cover? A song that you love that you think might suit me?

You are amazing you have a beautiful voice and a vibe that transmits joy ✨🌸🎉🎉🎉.
What a beautiful and cool initiative I congratulate you.
Thanks for the mention 🙈✨🌸.
I'm a lover of the classics and would love to hear your version of a Roy Orbison song "Oh, Pretty Woman".

Thank you for everything you said! Yes I do love music - I'm usually quite shy and emotionally reserved until I am singing and playing and so it is an important thing in my life!

You want me to tackle Roy Orbison? Hahaha I think he is regarded as one of the best voices ever... I certainly think so!

@jasperdick
The same thing happens to me, and when I start singing, the shyness, fears or doubts simply go away.
With music we can transit and honor our emotions.
To be free and fly, illuminating the path.

Regarding Roy's song
I am totally sure you will do wonderful ✨💕
✨🌸

You Rock

Greetings friend @jasperdick here I leave one of my favorite songs I hope you like it.

Ah that is a beautiful song - I think I actually had that cd as a teenager, with my older sister introducing me to the breakout CD from 1991!

I love your voice and the texture that comes with it. This song is an excellent song. I can wake up to listen to it at anyday of the time.

I've never taken the time to listen to piano man before but you make me want to listen to listen to it now

Thank you so much!

So... anybody can request me to try and play a song for them, and get 50% of the post rewards if I choose their song! What song would you like me to try for you next Thursday?

I love that sooong some you loved and piano maan, amaizing songs! Thanks for sharing!!!

It's a great pleasure! I need more song ideas for next week though!
