We want to dance again! This is why I love the French :)

in Music3 years ago

I was deeply moved today when I came across this song, written 4 months ago by a French maveric I hadn't heard of till now. He did not use a recording studio or fancy editing to make his official version of it on YouTube. It is one shot, one camera, one mic. Totally basic yet so very effective at catching a feeling which all of us can associate with.

"We've come to break the silence" he chants "we want to keep on dancing!"

Make sure your subtitles are on if you don't speak French. The translation isn't perfect but you get the idea.

Since releasing the song there have been a wave of flashmobs across the country, organised public performances like this one in a Paris train station a few weeks ago. Notice the people getting arrested at the end, coz yeah, this kind of flagrantly happy behaviour is very much illegal now.

This one at La Rochelle has a beatboxer ;)

This one in Avallon Forest has some amazing voices & costumes.

The list is endless when you look. So many people across not just France but multiple countries in Europe have done their own version of it.

Here is a pretty good European compilation.

The words, the music, the illegal public performances... it all mixes together perfectly to become something quite special and I must say, only the French could have pulled something like this off. To create a song which captures the moment so perfectly and inspires countless groups around the continent to sing along regardless of the potential legal consequences, all in a few months with zero publicity.

Bravo to the French man known as HK for his song and bravo to the people of Europe who are out there singing it for us now!

A beautiful feeling indeed and a great reminder of what it is to be human, because yes my friends, to dance is to be free.

And we must keep doing it!

Thanks @samstonehill for talking about HK and the saltimbanks. in a few weeks they have become very popular because this song sends a message to resist against the current dictatorship. English Lyrics
German version I like their style.
I do like this song of HK too Dis-leur que l'on s'aime, dis-leur que l'on sème. Sorry I could not find the translated version. It's a love song and it convinces us that we have to tell them that we love all each other on this planet.

The weirdest thing of all is that I know the accordion player from his group. She plays every weekend in the village next to ours, for all the people who come to the market. I had no idea what she did during the week till now. Small world hey!

Much appreciate the english lyrics. These are better than the youtube ones.

I will check out the other song you mentioned now...

Many thanks & keep on dancing :)

Vous parlez francais n est-ce pas ?

Pas vraiment. I try. But I am still a bit useless.

Do you live in France?

No I am french but I live in Hong Kong for 1 and half year. I love my beautiful country but 6 years ago we fled this execrable politic. As Macron said "We have in a certain way to deconstruct our own history."

I want to do this!!!!

Me too!!!😀

So cool right!

Thanks for sharing this :)

I love it! I'm an actress, and a bit of a singer, and my favorite acting to do is street art. I'm trying to get some folks together, but so far have only found one. The acting and music communities have fallen very hard for the covid con, so the peeps I know are holed up at home still terrified of getting a bad cold. I live in the heart of Covid Crazy, downstate New York. Best place to do it!

You totally rock! Wish I was there to help you. I would gladly play my guitar and sing. And film it all so we could share it with everyone!

It's weird to think of actors & musicians falling for it. Always imagined they would be more aware of our pesky elite problem? I guess in all walks of life now there will be a minority who get it and a majority who don't. As long as they let us keep dancing we won't have any problems!

I wholeheartedly wish you all the best on your conquest to get this done! Would you perform it with the original words or translated into english? Or perhaps you had something totally different in mind as a performance?

Here it would be more effective in English, but it would be cool to do it in both. The costumes will be the hardest for me. I know a few places that have the costumes, one in particular has the perfect stuff, but they are all too covid cray cray to rent them to me. Most of them have blocked me on FB for my views. Perhaps I should start small. I want to wear that dress! lol. Too bad I am old, covid-fat and not nearly such a great singer.

How many ways can I say I LOVE THIS???
Twitter and Facebook shared - now thinking it's time to start using the other share icons.
As one you-tube commenter said,

this song, which became in France a "national hymn", as it is repeated in each corner of the country, in big cities as well as in the smallest villages or inside houses, is so beautiful - and more contagious than any virus !

Thank you for sharing this, Sam, and thank you @owasco for resteeming it. I wouldn't have seen it otherwise.

Am so pleased you love it. We've not stopped singing it in this house since I discovered it a week ago. The kids know the words better than I do now.

I cried when I first heard it! Just don't tell any one please ;)

All the best to you @carolkean and please keep on dancing...

Yeah how did I miss this, we are doing one in Spanish this Thursday in the plaza, been rehearsing it today. Will keep you posted, such a great song xxxxx

Wonderful @samstonehill , just wonderful!
Yes, we must keep on dancing! 😀
