Crazy Serbs | Welcoming the Olympic Medalists in Front of the Parliament

I've missed you, dear friends and lovers of good photography. I took a few weeks off as I was feeling under the weather and didn't have the energy to post. Consider it a summer vacation for me, although hopefully there will be a real one soon. :) But for now I'm back and I have some photos to share.

This past week was eventful in Serbia, mainly for the two reasons - first is the protests against the mining company set to explore lithium in the heart of our country thus possibly creating havoc for the natural world. I'll share more about it soon. The other reason is the welcome of our Olympic medalists.

Perhaps you don't know it, but Serbian people are extremely passionate about sports, and more importantly about winning. For such a small country, the dominance across the sports world shows how much we value it and the level of passion our representatives bring each time. We tend to be sour losers as well and take underachievement really to heart. I personally have tried dialing it down and not stressing too much over the results, but the average Serbian still watches those games as if it's the matter of life and death.

The individual disciplines like swimming, athletics, gymnastics are not our forte mainly due to bad training conditions and poor technology so we usually don't have many medalists, but our main protagonists - Novak, basketball and waterpolo team saved the day in the end. Novak completing the last trophy he was missing and Nikola Jokić and the team almost defeating NBA superstars.

After each big result a special welcome is organized at the balcony of the city parliament. It must have been around 40.000 people this time.

Anyway, I got to the event a bit late (I wasn't really planning to attend as I was in the city for a different reason) and had to settle for a spot far from the stage. The crowd was going crazy in singing and shouting the names of the medalists as they were announced. Here are some of the photos I took with my Fuji X-Pro2.

Divne fotografije, volim Srbiju

How great that people received all the medalists like this! I admire Djokovic a lot, I was too happy that he finally won that gold medal he was missing, excellent shots!

The power of sports to unite and inspire!

It's thrilling to see your country people come together to celebrate this triumph. The photos are stunning and the joy is contagious.

Glad to see you're feeling better. I was almost worried you'd abandoned us for a secret Island getaway. Lol. But a summer vacation sounds like a much more relaxing explanation.
