One of the simple traditional cakes that still exist today in Indonesia is "Pandan Cake". Made from Pandan Leaves which is fragrant and also has a naturally bright green dye.
My mother asked me to buy "Pandan Cakes" because she knew I was busy and also fasting. So my mother said 'you don't have to bother making it, just buy it.'
For 2 USD, we got a box of “Pandan Cakes” with three different toppings in it.
So I decided to do plating with these cakes.
"Pandan Cakes" looks a bit messy because before I took the photo of the fresh version that I was bought, my nephew had already taken one piece.
MAKING SAUCES
I use two sauces for the “Pandan Cakes” plating. Mango Smoothies and Butterfly Pea Flowers sauces.
For the Butterfly Pea Flowers sauce, I used a mixture of Butterfly Pea Flowers tea mixed with coconut cream.
PLATING AND PHOTO SESSION
STEP 1: PREPARING THE PROPERTIES
Prepare the necessary equipment for plating and food photoshoots.
I transport all my equipment in one basket to the terrace area of the house.
I had to shoot on the terrace of the house for maximum natural lighting.
In this “Pandan Cakes” photoshoot, I used a cement background and some additional props.
I added some shells and also filled a shell with fresh Butterfly Pea Flowers that I just picked from the garden.
For added detail, I added flowers as well as a burlap for the shell and a fork base.
STEP 2: FORMING SAUCES
This is a step that is always challenging and exciting. Many unexpected things are happening. The result of the sauce I created was not a one-time try.
I had to remove several times the shape of the sauce which I thought failed to harmonize on the serving plate.
At first, it was enough with a simple form of sauce but still maintains its elegant and clean side.
STEP 3: ADDING THE MAIN OBJECT
Add with carefully “PANDAN CAKES” which is the main object of this plating and food photoshoot.
At this step, it is almost the same as the stage with the formation of the sauce. We need a steady hand with energy and a good mood. So, make sure you are stable to do this or it will all fall apart on the serving plate.
STEP 4: ADDING DETAILS
This is the most difficult step for me. My creative mind was very tested. I have to add details to the sauce that harmonizes the beauty with the main object.
I'm thankful that this time I was right when it came to choosing the sauces. It brings out beautiful colors on serving plates.
Combining two colors in one part to be interesting. Only need to be careful that the two remain separate retaining the character of their respective forms, which then come together to create a beautiful blend.
I also add mango topping to a serving plate and also for filling a shell. This enhances the tone of pictures that is more cheerful in the resulting photo.
THE RESULTS
PLAYING WITH SHAPES
It does not quite stop there. I'm not satisfied. I felt the shape of the previous “PANDAN CAKES” was not very good because the cuts followed the cut pattern of the bakery.
Finally, I decided to create another variation of the shape. If previously I put the cookies in a standing position, this time I put them in a lying position.
Ah, that looks better in my opinion.
Look at the results of the second version, below:
Which creation do you prefer in this food photoshoot?

Kalau saya ga tega mau makannya ini saking bagus banget platingnya. 😅.. good work, as always 👏👏
Makasih :)
Kayanya soft banget itu 😍
iya moist banget bolunya :)
Amazing photography as usual! The pandan cakes look moist and so fluffy. The colorful sauces make them look more appetizing.
I'm also fascinated by the butterfly pea flower. I didn't know it is edible. Looking back, I remember playing with these flowers as a kid. We mash them to add colors to our different leaves concoctions when playing pretend cook. LOL.
Yeep, the flower is edible. I know from Malay people. I often saw in their restaurant for 'Nasi Lemak'.
Your plates are lovely as always. I am in love with those flowers. We don't have them in Canada but I saw them in Mexico and they are truly beautiful. I didn't know at the time that they were edible.
Edible and has great natural medicine for our body :)
