Can you do it with an Adult Camera?

Canon 5d Classic in 2022

Canon 5d Classic would be really close to be able to drink legally in most countries in Europe and would be able drive around in almost all 😂 It was released in 2005. I did a good amount of live performance photos from Underground Cafe and on some of them there were questions could it be done with equipment that is not that new and expensive.

We were about to film a music video on Sunday so all my equipment was busy with charging and sorting everything that i will need so i thought that this High End trio jazz live performance was a perfect opportunity for me to wipe off the dust (literally) from the Canon 5d Classic and give it a go in a test that i knew it will be challenging.

To answer the question, you kinda can, almost 😄

The highest ISO on Canon 5d classic is 1600. To put it in perspective Canon R6 highest ISO is 102400. That is 6 more stops of light. Difference is bigger then Canon 5d classic does from the lowest 100 ISO to highest 1600. And 1600 is not that usable if you don't like grain/noise.

The only lens at the moment that i can use on Canon 5d Classic is Canon 85mm. So i was a bit worried about how low could i go with shutter speed and not get blur from shake of my hands. With no stabilization double of the mm of the lens is a safety number, but that would be "blocking" more light then i wanted, so i tested my shaky hands 😄.

Guitar player had a decent amount of light on him, so he was most photographed and there was an opportunity to get some decent photos. Color of the led lights was well as it was 😄.

The drummer and double bass players were not that lucky with the light conditions. So even with high ISO it was hard to get a decent exposure. So the photos are not spectacular, but still almost decent :)

I really, really like those that you've done in black and white.

I've personally always felt that the lens was more important than the sensor/film, but that simplistic statement also assumes that there is sufficient light. When shooting digital I do not like using anything above ISO 1600 for the noise you mention, too, but my digital cameras are also feeling like grandparents as this point as well.

b&w probably looks better because of the weird colors of those LEDs.

lenses do "last" longer and hold the price for a long time. if you don't change the system often investing in lenses makes more sense, especially is you only do photos. Video improvements on cameras was most noticeable but maybe even that will now kinda slow down as most do good 4k and 99% of people have no reason to use 8k or +.

Old camera + great lens can give you great results. New camera + "bad" lens will not be that great.

on 600d my top willing to use was 1600, on 80d it was 3200 and on r6 if the light is ok for that 10000 is fine. ISO sensitivity went up a lot with new cameras. I feel that is maybe the most developed thing in digital cameras. and maybe focus tracking.

I use one canon rebel t3, is a really old camera but i learned what you learned this time too...

We dont really need expensives cameras we only need a good eye and good understanding of the manual Mode of the camera

Obviosly expensiver cameras do better job BUT it is no like 100% necessary at least no at the start

there are some things that are hard to do with older cameras, photos in the dark are one of them as sensors developed a lot. but if you have enough light, new cameras just make it easier.

Exactly that... new cameras just make it easier.

For me is Harder to get a new expensiver camera than to get the correct setting to work with.

i still do some crazy DIYs to get some things to work that would be much easier if i would be able/willing to pay for stuff i need :D

Yeah some times we have to do the necessary stuff to complete the work

Great on stage images! 👏 Thanks for sharing your post!

Wanna do this as adult 😂. Trying to go through these tutorials, maybe I will start with the android camera first.

exposure triangle works the same on everything that has manual options. i learned it on a point and shoot :)

I think that lens worked out pretty well!

lens is a good one and it helped the camera do manage the light 😁

amazing and insanely creative photography. ❤️

would not go that far but thanks 😂
