~ Fungus Among Us ~

This is part two of my Fungi Friday : Nice Day for a Walk post. As it turns out... i will have to make a third post to share the last bits with you all. Since the last post was so long and this one as well, i decided to have even less commentary on this one!

I didn't go in sequential order this time, but rather in order of interest. I will say that only a couple of photographs out of the whole lot were edited in any way. These are straight from nature to my camera, then to you! I am quite proud of that fact considering the camera i use.

Please enjoy the views!

This little guy was just popping right out of the moss-covered ground and it caught my eye. If i had been walking from the other direction i would have easily missed that little bit of white peaking out of all that green. Since these are macro shots you have to keep in mind everything is much smaller than it appears in these images.

~ Textures ~

I did mention that i wanted to touch on (pun intended) the topic of texture. From the smooth, rough, or slimy caps to the ruffled veils, or the ridged gills to the stalks... all mushrooms have texture. I have seen this texture varies depending on the stage of life or death the fruiting body is in but it's always an interesting characteristic.

2a.jpg

If you look close, below, you can see the snail trail leading to the devoured and additionally textured area! Super cool.

2b.jpg

Some look velvety like a flower petal and others look like they were dipped in crushed peanuts.

2c.jpg

Here is one of the patterns that i mentioned in the last post.

2d.jpg

Someone told me this one below looks like a child's shoe. I like how the gills do in fact look like tread.

2e.jpg

Here is another one of the mushrooms that reminds me of a brownie. It was hiding under that tuft of grass. If i hadn't stopped to shoot a shroom in squatting distance... i would have missed it!

2f.jpg

2g.jpg

2h.jpg

While some of these remind me of a baked brownie... many of them remind me of hamburger buns! More on that in the next post!

2i.jpg

2j.jpg

Many of these shots here in this post are different angles of some of the shrooms i shared last time.

2k.jpg

2l.jpg

These ones below looked a lot like wood but upon closer inspection they almost seemed to have a really fine fur.

3.jpg

Here is one with the cap peeling away from the gills. I really liked the dark and burnt tones of this one!

3a.jpg

This semi eaten youngster looks a lot like a partially eaten and rotting apple.

3b.jpg

I think these below are a bearded variety. The texture was definitely that of hair... and beard hair in particular.

3c.jpg

3d.jpg

I often wonder how these mushroom fruiting bodies tend to mimic their surroundings?! This one had the look, color, and texture of a leaf. It blends right in other than standing a bit above the forest floor.

3e.jpg

But mushrooms don't have eyes (that we know of) so how could it adapt to color or appearance over time? Just something that made me think.

~ Slime Time ~

The snots, i mean shots we have all been waiting for! I mentioned i had a bunch of these slimy ones to share. I wasn't sure if the photos were capturing the slimy sheen so i took way more than i needed and i am glad i did.

4.jpg

Thanks to a commenter on the last post we did identify them and as it turns out... you can eat these... after you wash off the snot.

4a.jpg

That's good to know in a survival situation because they were growing very abundantly on some fallen trees in the forest.

4b.jpg

4c.jpg

4d.jpg

I think the two above are my favorite shots... and the one with the fly in it. I don't know why but when i see these kinds i think of a family. They seem like one big family growing up, living, and dying together.

4e.jpg

4f.jpg

4g.jpg

Catching that drip of snot about to slide of the edge was cool.

4h.jpg

4i.jpg

I really like how in the image below the focus is set on the fallen and dead one of the group. That one off in the background is cool too.

4j.jpg

4k.jpg

Sometimes i am not sure if some mushrooms remind me of some ufo's or if it's some ufo's remind me of mushrooms. The traditional flying saucer cap! Either way, it always looks cool to me.

4l.jpg

5a.jpg

5b.jpg

5c.jpg

This next one probably conveys the snot gloss the best... what do you think?

5d.jpg

As much as the gloss is cool i think my favorite aspect to these is their apparent semi-transparent caps. If you look at the ridges and some under areas of their caps you can see the light glowing right through!

5e.jpg

5f.jpg

Sometimes, i picture a tiny little macro me living under or within these fungal outgrowths.

~ Some Parting Thoughts ~

I really love mushrooms. I don't know why i am so drawn to their shapes, colors, and features. To be honest, i am not sure why i didn't get into them sooner! I am fortunate to be here where the mushrooms are to be found all over.

5l.jpg

As much as i enjoy mushrooms... capturing their beauty is a fascinating endeavor considering how delicate, fragile, and short-lived they are.

6.jpg

I have come to find that if you look all around you... who knows what beauty there is to be discovered?

I can say you won't find any if you don't look. Sometimes, all you have to do is look. Look up, look down, look all around... and find some beauty of your own to appreciate today!

I heard the lyrics playing in my mind as i read that! Super cool. Nice alliteration use there too! hahhaa

Oh the snotty ones again :)
I probably haven't shot this many different mushrooms in the past few years total.

I am fortunate to be here where the mushrooms are to be found all over.

Yea you are!

Wow! I am much more fortunate than i realize then! Good thing i appreciate the opportunity! I need to go get more shots before it's too late!
Thanks for stopping by and taking time to comment! =)

Damn mam, you could live in the woods :)

I am already a hermit... now i just need a hut out there somewhere! hahaha
I could live in the woods. We just need some fungus wi-fi hotspots. If only we could tap into their network! hahaha
Thanks for stopping by browski!

Woooow, so many of them. Such a diversity! I took a look into our woods last year and I discovered maybe 5 ot 6 different species. Lucky you :) Thanks for sharing those great pictures!

5 or 6 different ones isn't so bad. I was glad to see the diversity that i did... but there are many more that i didn't see. It's raining now... so maybe i will get some more shots in the next day or two! They love the rain.

Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment! I do appreciate the appreciation!

Those small holes from other mushrooms really bother me, but the patterns are pleasing at the same time! Love that orange-looking mushroom. I also thought it was adapting to its environment. It would be awesome to discover if it really does!

Yes, i think when it comes to nature we all should reaccess our position of what denotes intelligence. Plants (and i am sure fungi) have their own sort of intelligence.

Yes, some of the elements on some of these mushrooms feels disturbing a little... yet beautifully pleasing to observe. Thanks for taking the time to comment and appreciate the post! =)

Incredible, almost fairytale images. I really like walking in the woods, interesting discoveries are made. Congratulations on these wonderful photos

Thank you very much! It is very fairytale-like when i shoot mushrooms and they do have a long history with the folktales of little people. In fact, fairy rings are when the mushroom dies in the middle but the spores all spread in a circular pattern. I have seen them a couple of times... but it's just a ring of mushrooms. Super cool.

Thank you for taking time to stop by and check out the shots and comment! =)

I was satisfied with all those macro shoot! I love the details that being shown from your great capture. It surely make me feel like I am just a small human wondering on the land of mushrooms! Thank you for sharing this.

You are welcome. Thank you for your comment! It's nice to know satisfying images to me... are also satisfying to others! It makes sharing even more fun and special.

to be honest I have never saw that from that close and you have talked some brilliant pictures editing all the pictures are beautiful I cannot even differentiate which ones are edited and which ones are not to you have done a great job I don't think there is a need for editing amazing pictures

I agree, great photos don't need to be edited. I only resized the photos so it wouldn't take so long to load the post here. So, only a couple are touched up with lighting and color etc. but those were in my first post. I don't think any in this post here have been touched up!

Thanks for taking the time to stop by and comment! I am glad you enjoyed all the different mushrooms and fungi.

Just imagine little fairies living inside those mushrooms as houses (I am very imaginative).

Also never seen these types of mushrooms before, very interesting.

I also imagine wonderful things when i am taking my time getting the shots right. I imagine all the little elves, gnomes, and fairies hanging out in the forest with their little mushroom villiages. Glad i am not the only one! hahha
Thanks for stopping by and taking time to comment! Glad you enjoyed the post.

I really did.

Awesome! Question, if the snail are eating this, meaning it is edible right?

image.png

Edible for insects and snails, yes. Would i give it a taste, absolutely not! Some of the other ones they eat are some of the deadliest mushrooms we know of.

I would always be on the side of caution with mushrooms Some of the best tasting ones have mimics that almost look the same but are poisonous. =)

thats a typical logic, haha! but answer is: no.

moose also love to find and eat the beautiful Amanita muscaria... just to get rid off the parasite sin its stomach. i.e. they use toxic mushrooms as a remedy... ofc it doesnt mean it is strictly 'edible'

I remember when I was kid I use to see all theses mashrooms I remember we used to play with them but it’s been a while since I have saw some. Good pictures good writing

Maybe it's time to look again more closely. I notice kids see things differently. Thanks for taking the time to stop by and comment. I appreciate your kind words.

Yeah I totally agree , thanks for sharing.
