Creativity versus negligence

IMG_7267.jpg

Visiting Nafplio involves a dive into Greece's history, many beautiful walks in the old town and a lot of amazing view points. It also involves shopping, an abundant nature and many more. I gave you a glimpse of all that during the last week (you can follow the links above, if you missed them) but I have something more to share, something quite controversial and rather unusual for a tourist destination.

This building used to be an amazing hotel. It has an ideal location between the old town, the medieval fortress and the only beach of the town. On top of that it was designed by a gifted architect and it was an admirable landmark! I wrote a post a couple of years ago, trying to explain the inexplicable but this story is beyond reasoning.

Now, neglected for years, it has become a meeting point for rebel teenagers, an off the track attraction for bold tourists and a big canvas for many graffiti artists. Myself I decided to focus on that last characteristic and I go there every time I visit the area to see what's new on the walls and how creativity is fighting negligence.

I can think of many ways that the citizens could make a good use of this building if it never becomes a hotel again but I don't have much hope that they will. I did though, a very amusing thought as I was taking those pictures.

Imagine renovating it to a 5 star hotel with all the fancy furniture and linens that go along and keeping the graffiti on the walls :)

Wouldn't that be an original and funny concept?

I have found a small video on youtube from the opening of the original hotel in 1961. It is interesting to see the difference between that era and today!

So many cool pieces of art. Thanks for sharing them

Thanks a lot, I am only the messenger :)

That idea of a hotel whose walls are full of graffiti sounds great.
Very nice photos, I'm a fan of visiting abandoned places and feeling a bit of their history.

Thank you Ender, glad you like them!
The appeal of decay is always strong :)

You are right. I used to be very angry with what happened to this place. But I can't change it and me getting upset is not helping either, so now I just observe and try to look for anything positive, no matter how small it might be!
