Back to Neds Point

Back to Neds Point

I revisited Ned's Point and the lighthouse in Mattapoisett recently, I have previosly shared this post about it, but this time I went there when I was trying to capture some light trails with my gopro (which to be honest I had mediocre success with), but while the gopro was doing its thing I did walk around to get some steps in and get more shots of the Lighthouse and the park.
All of these shots are long exposures of around 30 seconds as it was still pretty dark at the time, this first shot shows the lighthouse and some of the green area around it, with the moon over the lighthouse

For those who missed the previous post, I am reusing some text from that post below and so I dont get accused of plagarisn of myself I will add it as the source
Ned Point Light as it is official called I believe is a historic lighthouse on Ned's Point Road in Mattapoisett, Massachusetts.
The lighthouse was built in 1838 at a cost of approximately $5,000, and named after Ned Dexter, a local farmer. Supervised by a local builder, Leonard Hammond, the lighthouse was constructed with a birdcage-style lantern similar to Bird Island Light found in Marion, Massachusetts.

All the stone used for the construction of the lighthouse was locally sourced, with most of it originating from nearby beaches.

Inside, Which I didn't get to see, are 32 granite steps that are cantilevered to the outside wall without the use of mortar. The original lantern used 11 whale oil lamps, each with its own parabolic reflector. And like other lighthouses I have read up on around here the Whale oil no doubt came from the New Bedford Whaling ships.

The Great Blizzard of 1888 significantly damaged the keeper's stone house, resulting in it being demolished and the building of a wooden replacement.

Following modernization in 1961, the lighthouse was reactivated in 1961 with its current 6-second isophase.

It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

Its a lovely spot to visit the lighthouse on a green field , which was very damp that morning my shoes got soaked through on that mornings walk

This next shot to show the field around the lighthouse, and a little hut off to the right, there is also behind me a rest room building

the same hut and the lighthouse from another angle, I like this spot for the view of the lighthouse and across the water, whenver I go there I walk in circles around the non paved road surrounding this field and the car park, each time I have bene there in the early morning there has been very few people there os it is so peaceful

For this next shot I am standing in the car park beside my car, this spot wasnt good for light trails because of too much man made light also called light pollution by those who do a lot of Astro or star trail photos, you can see it with the lights lighting up the green area

I love the lighthouse under the stars - cool long exposures JJ, and my favourite is the first photo this time. The moon over the lighthouse is a great addition 😀

I guess the closest ones for you would be in Italy or Slovenia and quite a distance from you

Yep, I have already found a few in Slovenia and in Italy, but in times like these I don't want to make such long trips and prefer to be back home on the same day.

That makes a lot of sense, in the future you can do that when things are better

I hope that this all will be over when I retire in 5 years, but at the moment it's getting worse than ever here.

Thanks! Have a nice day 😊

👍🙂👍

Some awesome shots for sure! I get annoyed at the light pollution for sure. There’s so much! When we were able to show our son the stars when we were in Maine he was amazed there were so many, since we typically don’t see much.

Love the moon above the lighthouse shot, that ones my favorite!

Thanks for your feedback :)
and yes in NYC when I lived there you seldom saw stars inthe sky and its better here, but you need places like Maine to really see them well

Awesome shots. My dad has a GoPro that I was playing around with a little last summer. He wanted me to get some underwater footage with it, so I attached it to one of our nieces when they went swimming. I also had my nephew put it on his bike. It was pretty cool.

For such a small device they are really cool, I think mine will be gathering dust till spring though to cold out for the next few months

Yeah, I hear you there!

Excellent photos! Your post allowed me to take a virtual walk to Cape Neddick Light is a lighthouse in Cape Neddick! 👍

I really like Ned's point. I voted and forgot to comment today! :) I really like the first shot, although they all have a finer point to them.

I like the up-close details of the first. Lighthouses are so special, I really enjoy being able to see the whole thing like that.

Thanks I do find lighthouses so special especially in the early morning light

And don't worry I have done the same with voting and forgetting to go back and leave a comment

imagine my surprise when i saw that you posted neds point light. for years my parents had a boat moored at the mattapoisett boatyard first a bristol 35- the windflower for a few years followed by a cartwright 40-the windflower 2. i couldn't count the number of times we sailed out in buzzards bay for a day or longer trips to the islands and beyond. we even raced in the marion to bermuda regatta in 1979 and 1981. fond memories. my father was so fond of the boat and the area that after his death we spread some of his ashes at the boatyard and some at the lighthouse.

great shots of the light. i have been on the grounds around it several times but viewed it mostly from the sea.

Thanks so much I loose when a post triggers memories for someone

I was editing shots at the mattapoisett wharf this morning so that will a future post
