How to Identify POISON IVY // and some common treatments

in DTube4 years ago

Welcome back, and thanks for joining me. It is that season again and we are starting to hear talk about poison ivy. Is it actually poison ivy?

There are a few ways to Identify poison ivy. Besides the nasty rash that follows an encounter, you can positively Identify it with just a few details.

Poison ivy leaves grow in threes. All three leaves grow from the same point on the stem. One leaf straight out the end and two leaves to each side. The stem is typically a red color.

The leaves are rounded and then come to a point. Common traits for the leaves would be notches on the side. Some only have it on one side, but some have it on both.

Poison Ivy also contains an oily resin called Urushiol. This oil is what causes the allergic reactions many people. It is important to wash this off under cold water within 10 minutes of known contact. That would be for the best results.

There are several known treatments for poison ivy. I tend to lean toward natural treatments like Apple cider vinegar. This acts as a drying agent.

I hope that this video might help set some minds at ease for many people that are heading into nature. Have fun and stay safe!

Be well.

My daughter crushes jewelweed (Impatiens capensis) along with alcohol for the rash. If she thinks she may have come in contact with it but has no rash yet, she'll just use the crushed weed. Jewelweed tends to grow in the same area as poison ivy and poison oak.
