Centipede lnvasion In My Hostel

Hey guys, it’s been a while I wrote in this community, and what I’m writing about now is the last thing I thought I’d be writing for the first time in such a long time.

My title is a bit of a clickbait because it’s not a mass invasion like the title might lead you to believe.

The season around here has been in a transition from Harmattan (dry season) to Rainy season. Now for the most part, this is a good thing because we’re about to start getting rain and agriculture can begin again.

But you know, if you love the rain, you gotta be prepared to deal with the mud it comes with. In this case, the mud the rainy season comes with is all sorts of dangerous animals. Reptiles in most cases.

A funny thing happened a few weeks ago when easing into relaxation after a stressful day at work, I switched my lights off and put a movie on to drift off into sleep. Lol

I felt something climbing my leg and at first, I thought it was just the usual hairy leg illusion, but a while later I felt a sharp sting on my leg and that was when I realized it wasn’t the usual thing.

Surprisingly when pushed whatever it was off and turned the lights on to check what gave me that fright, I found..nothing. I noticed there was a sting still in my leg at the time and I knew it wasn’t a mistake that I found a sting still in my leg but nothing to account for where the sting came from.

Since I wasn’t seeing anything visibly on the floor in my room, it was clear that whatever it was had crawled under my bed. So next thing I did was turn my bed(which is dusty af and on the floor) upside down and lo and behold, this beast was resting comfortably under, pretending to be dead.

I honestly almost bought into the fake death because I thought my weight crushed it when it went under. Still, I wasn’t taking any chances. I picked a pen that was sitting on my desk and touched it with the pen and this mf started wriggling. Yeah fucking right.

I don’t even know what to call it. It looked like a centipede, but this thing was huge! Almost a mini size snake! Because of the nature of the pair of sting it had the tail end, it resembled a scorpion more though. Reminded me of @mipiano who isn’t scared of ssssscorpions. Hehe

I’m not sure whether you can see it in the picture, but if you look close enough, the stings are supposed to be two, but you’ll notice that one sting in the pair is broken or missing. That’s the one I found in my leg. Lol

Back to that wriggling fucker. Of course I didn’t let him get away. I killed him more times than I could count because he just wouldn’t die. This thing has 9 lives.

After disposing off it outside, I just couldn’t sleep the same that night. I woke up at the mere feel of sudden hot air on my leg or any funny bizarre movement.

I’m glad the sting didn’t cause any health complications and that I was back to normal after scratching for a minutes.

I don’t know about everyone else, but it’s especially dangerous this time of year because reptiles and even dangerous arachnids and chilopods make their ways into homes and if by mistake make into bed rooms for instance, God forbid what could happen.

Since my encounter, I close my 2 doors immediately I get in and I don’t leave any spaces that anything big enough to cause fatal harm could slither into. I know it’s not entirely assured we can keep these things out, but we can try a few preventive approaches to keep our homes safe and clear of them.

Stay sage out there and watch out!

Damn that sucks dude! Lol I hate those things as well and that’s definitely the tough part about living in warmer climates! When you live somewhere it snows, the things all just die so we don’t have to worry as much but we are trying to move somewhere warmer and will have to content with these things lol.

That certainly looks like some type of centipede!

I thought they were only a problem around here. Looks like they made it international. Lol

You can’t even see how big that thing is because for some reason, my camera wasn’t so keen on showing it’s true size, only it’s features. It was big though. Biggest centipede I’ve ever seen.

Ohh we have those damn things here and can grow up to a foot long. Ours bite though rather than sting and if you do get bitten, it's hospital time! Nasty bastards.
Never had these problems back in the UK!

Take care fella and good to see you doing so well here on Hive. Best wishes to you :-)

Lol they BITE? Tf. The sting was painful enough. How did nature decide to give these fuckers jaws?

I found something similar in my compound yesterday, bigger though, like a mini snake, but it wasn't a snake at all.

This season really brings them out of their hideout indeed

Gotta be careful, man. For the rainy season is dark and full or terrors:)

Yes, that is a centipede. But, they don't have a sting on their tail end. They deliver venom via a pair of modified legs on the first body segment after the head.

That first pair of legs are modified into claws that they use to pinch their prey with, to inject venom. We have lots of them here in the Philippines, and some species of ours can grow to a foot long.

Their venom is not deadly to adult humans, unless one is allergic to it. But their pinch is very painful, like a bee sting, and it can be deadly to a child or a baby.

Yhp. Tell me about the pain.

I would definitely call it a snake if I saw one that was a foot long. What?!

I thought Canada was the home to these freaks of nature. Lol

I would undoubtedly scream if I saw a centipede crawling in my legs. Aside from snakes and spiders, the centipede is one of my hated reptiles. Good thing you were fine. I remembered five years ago, our father saw a centipede in our bed, and it made us all frightened🥹

Oh I don’t have a problem with spiders. Or maybe I just haven’t seen a scary enough on yet.

I'm afraid of their venom hahaha and I also don't want to turn as a Spiderman jk

Haha if there was a spider that could do that, I’d offer myself up.

Yay! 🤗
