Chocolate And Everything In Between

I couldn’t pass on the opportunity to participate in this week’s #edtopic proposed by @mypathtofire. Especially since the topic is so relatable. For the record, I make it a habit of telling my family the topics or stories I’m writing about for Hive. And when they heard it was on Something Sweet, they burst into loony grins because it’s no secret, that I am sweet and sweet is me.

It's always been a constant battle at home. Tess, Mama and the battle of sweets. She knew I had a sweet tooth when I was caught as a kid taking cubes of sugar from the sugar jar to lick privately. In my defence, I remember asking for ice cream and it wasn’t given and I usually felt restless when I didn’t have something sweet in my mouth. So I bet if the sugar jar was human, it would burst into tears each time I opened the cupboard.

I absolutely adore chocolates. I always have. I remember each time my mum served us hot cocoa, I’d take my cup and sneak back into the kitchen to add two or three more heaps of cocoa powder into my cup. And then when I ate a Snickers bar for the first time, it was like heaven was handed over to me. love everything chocolate. Chocolate mousse cakes, chocolate chip cookies, chocolate eclairs, chocolate doughnuts.

My cravings haven’t changed. I guess as I grew older and had more money in my pocket, I decided to try other things. But it needs to have something chocolatey though. So when I eat a parfait, that chocolate goodness has got to be in it. But the first time I had a slice of a three-layered cake where the top was chocolate, the second layer, red velvet and the last layer, vanilla, I was like okay….I could get used to this taste.

So cakes become the IT dessert for me. It’s light and moist and the flavour usually just bursts in my mouth. And I have no fixed time for eating them. I eat them anytime I get a craving. My cravings mostly run between sweet and spicy so I don’t mind spending my last cash on any of these two. Once sweet tooth mode is activated and I have the money on me, I dash to the nearest mall. Sometimes with a friend or two but other times by myself.

Where I stay, there’s only a handful of places that serve nice pastries and sweet things and most times the kind of ice cream you’d want to it is not readily available. So, you mostly have to make do with what’s there but that’s okay. I have a list of sweet pastries and foods I haven’t tried and would love to try. So, the moment I find myself in an environment where these sweets are there, I’ll whip up my list and proceed to knock myself out.

I don’t usually make my sweet things myself. I won’t say it’s because I’m not interested. My mum was a caterer so there was an abundance of cakes and pastries at home. But I wasn't eager to learn. I do know how to make the little pastries though but I'm usually at a loss when it comes to the kind of pastries I would like to eat. Nevertheless, I do have visions of making my own treats but till then.... Now all this talk of sweets has ignited my sweet tooth to the hilt so I’ll probably be banging on @wongi’s door pretty soon to accompany me to the mall. Bills on her, of course. Lol.
