The Power of Complaining - An Update on the Disappointing Delivery of My Printed Books

This is a continuation of my books arrived ( and were almost stolen) at my mom's front door

So, the books arrived and my mom was about to send a bunch of them from her, in The Netherlands, to me, in Portugal, by snail mail.

And then...

she put on her 'reading glasses' and discovered that many of the books didn't look very good

as was the case for her, without her reading glasses ( and I'm not referring to her looks here )

Sorry for making fun of you, mom, if you ever read this. I am a storyteller, after all, and I put the joke in subscript, so those without reading glasses probably won't even notice it at all ;<)

To get back to the quality of the books,
apparently 34 out of the 49 copies ( they sent 49 instead of 50 ) weren't looking great.

Here's some pictures to prove it:

As you can see with your own eyes ( it's hard to use someone elses eyes ), I am not referring to the print itself, nor to the font, layout or the illustrations.

It it the binding/ glueing/ attachment of the pages, as well as the folding/ crumpling that has happened to 70% of the books.

As if a robot has mangled them a little, with its metal hands.

Perhaps someone wasn't liking his job very much and looking for a way out?

Anyhow, my mom told me to complain to the print company.

She already told me, previously, to complain about the box of books being dropped outside of her front door ( when nobody opened the door ), instead of ringing the neighbors' doorbell,
as described in the previous book post.

Now I didn't feel the need to complain about that.

After all, the books had arrived, and I prefer not to waste any energy on stuff that almost happened, but I agree that 34 out of 49 books looking bot handled and one book missing was worth complaining about.

So, today, I reached out to the printing company and ( text ) chatted with a helpdesk employee in as friendly a way as possible.

You guys know I'm a friendly raptor, right?

She told me to send the company an email and attach photos.

I followed her advice and pretty much wrote in the email what I'd already told her.

An hour or so later, I received a reply informing me that they offered to print the mangled copies, again, free of charge.

I agreed with the offer, knowing that I will now end up with plusminus 85 copies, instead of 50.

Pretty cool :<)

I had felt, somewhere, that 50 copies wouldn't suffice and now I'll have a bunch more, free of charge.

The next thing I need to do is cook up a plan of what to do with the not so nice looking prints.

I am considering to hand them out, with a discount, to those who don't mind a book that looks like it has been read already ( but then without bodily fluids, hairs, coffee stains etc. ) or I might even give some of them away, for free.

So, if you don't mind a somewhat imperfect print of *Hypersensitivosaurus, let me know, and I'll see what I can do for you.

TO BE CONVINUED...

Sort:

Wow, from that first picture, if I didn't know any better, I'd have thought they were of some used notebooks like the pile I have left over from classes I'd attended. Good you got on the "horn" and contacted the company. Fingers crossed that they will make this right.

When I sold things on Ebay, I always added a shipping fee so that I didn't have to pay it "out of pocket" as we say here. I wonder how you're going to handle that as your popularity grows as an author.

(Just think. We'll be able to say that we knew you before you signed with Random House, the seven book series beginning with "HyperSensitivesaurus and the Philosphers Stone," the global book tour, the movies based on the book, with Tom Hanks voicing the "saurus" himself, being named as one of Oprah's favorite things, and your marriage to one or more Kardashians. I'll be jostled by your security team as I reach out for an autograph at a book signing, but The paparazzi will love you! :)

I am doing exactly that.

I think the hardest part is going to keep it personal ( I'm not using Print on Demand ) and sending each and every book over myself, manually.

Once I have grown into a J.K. Rowling caliber writer, I probably have to make some concessions ;<)

You are hilarious buddy and I have to sleep on ( pun intended ) marrying one of the Kardashians.

Thanks for the kind words and for making my laughing muscles hurt! :<)

P.S. I read this

'll be jostled by your security team as I reach out for an autograph at a book signing, but The paparazzi will love you! :)

as you being part of my security team.

I heard you're good with words and not afraid ( to say what you think) ;<)

Lol! That last part made my day! It was written more from this perspective:

"Hey, it's me, EverNoticeThat from Hive. I'd like you to sign my..."

Lowering his head, the very regal Vincent looks over his one-of-a-kind Tom Ford glasses at this irritating interloper:

"Ever. Notice. Who? Nope, don't recall the name" Quietly sighing as an attendant is powdering his cheecks with a citrus-scented puff, he whispers a command into his Apple Watch Ultra.

Burly security guards suddenly appear out of nowhere to drag the intruder away:

"I just wanted to get your auuuuttooggrapphhhh...."

Raising a bejewled and perfectly manicured hand, a freshly squeezed orange juice is pressed into it, and Vincent settles back into his amazing world.

Lol! I would love to see you get that big as an author, while being waited on hand and foot. Keep writing! :)

Haha! Have you ever thought of writiing screenplays? ;<)

I am good with names, so I would sure know who evernoticethat was, although I wouldn't know how I'd react to your face, of course haha!

That 'scene' you describe reminds me of once attending a talk by David Lynch ( who used to be my favorite filmmaker ), around 2010, in Amsterdam.

Lynch ended up not talking about his filmmaking at all and merely about transcendental meditation and bringing peace to the world.

I wasn't surprised as I wrote my masters thesis about his work and knew about this side of him but many were.

Afterwards, people tried to dive bomb on him to get autographs, while bodyguards pushed him into a limo.

I witnessed it all from a distance and merely laughed about the whole situation.

Cheers for visualizing me in such a way, I'm just not sure how I'd feel about fame. I sure do appreciate your well wishes :<)

That’s a load of shit dude, but it has a silver lining in which you got some extra copies! Hopefully the poor sap who did that isn’t going to get their left kidney stolen by the company for making such a mistake as fucking up the dinosaur books! The nerve on that plebeian.

I thought they might fire somebody for it and I've lost plenty of jobs in the past ( sometimes for mistakes made ) so that thought crossed my mind ;<)

Could I perhaps interest you in a digital copy ( for 10 Hive or 3.5HBD )? I think your son ( and you ) might like it :<)

Ya for sure dude how do I get it?

I basically need your email address.
Do you use peakd. We can dm in beechat ;<)

or you can reach out to me on Discord - VincentNijman ZENsitivosaurus#5870

Hi Vincent, happy to hear they will print new copies, I would say that's the least they could do. I'm sorry I have been so absent. For different reasons, I haven't been active on Hive for quite some time.

I hope you're doing well 🤗

Hey Malin,

I'm sure you have valid reasons for having been quiet :<)

Thanks for reaching out!

Yeah, I'm looking forward to the ( extra ) books arriving at my place, in Portugal, somewhere next week.

Big hug!

I'm sorry about all these errors. I'd be happy to have one though, if they are not already allocated. I'm dying to see one. Much love ❤

I will surely send a signed copy your way.
You are among the top of my list.

Will need to find a way to make it reach your truck/ land though ;<)

The reprint is delayed with some days ( hopefully arrives in a pickup point in my street on Saturday. My mom also promised me to send a bunch of the first print copies to me soonish.

Sending much love to you too ❤ ❤

It's really sad to see the books reach you in this condition. I think the publisher/printer needs to focus on quality, otherwise, their business will be shutdown soon.

I don't understand why they didn't check before sending but it's good to see how they responded to my complaint.

Ending up with 35 more books, without having to pay more, is pretty cool :^)

Yes ;) You can gift those old books to the one's who can't afford to buy ;)

I like that idea, although I still have to deal with postage fees.

Even shipping one book in The Netherlands costs me 3 euros and 3 cents,
almost as much as a single print of the book.

Don't ship to anyone, you can give them to your neighbors, family members and friends.

I will see what I can do. I basically plan to ship out the good looking ones.
Most friends, family members don't live close to my mom, but in other towns or countries.

Okay okay, do what you think is better.

Hi Vincent, even without my glasses on, I could see the terrible conditions these books came in. Keeping my fingers crossed that the next one will be better. And congratulations on the publishing of the book.

Haha! Cheers! I am sure the next print/ re-print will be of improved quality.

I appreciate your comment and well wishes :<)

This is very wrong, it should not be like this, every time a person orders, they will have a book in this condition, it will not be good for your repotation at all. Business can never thrive unless there is quality in things.

Not good for their reputation indeed but I am happy with my free books and I will find a way to hand out the imperfect books too.

Yeah you are right

Let's hope those new ones arrive in better condition.

Yup. Fingers crossed 🤞
