Market Friday does the Carwash

in Market Friday3 years ago (edited)

I have to be honest. I like to drive my car, and it gets bonus points if it is clean and shiny - one of the reasons that carwashes dot the landscape of the US. While many still wash their own car, there are times you just cannot beat the convenience of it. The very first car wash was opened up in 1914 in Detroit, Michigan. They called the Automated Laundry. The rest is history.

Today is #MarketFriday initiated by @dswigle (Denise, that's me!!) Join me as we share our markets across the globe. It is amazing to see the different markets and cultures of our friends here on Hive. Going shopping or gaining entry to a museum, zoo, or park where you pay a fee? Take us with you!

A Few Facts about Detroit

Regarded as a major cultural center, Detroit is known for its contributions to music and as a repository for art, architecture, and design, along with its historical automotive background.
It's dubbed the Motor City for a reason. Detroit was home to the first mile of concrete highway, the first four-way three-color traffic light, and the world's first urban freeway. It's also the site of the Detroit Windsor Tunnel, the first traffic tunnel between two nations. And obviously, because I just told you, the first carwash.

car wash 2 edit.jpg

First things first. Splash & Dash Car Wash is where one goes when your car needs a little bit of pampering done, especially when the long winter is done. I don't know about you, but, getting the salt off the undercarriage is easier said than done. Drive right up to the menu and see what they have to offer. Don't forget to look for coupons in all the regular places, mailed coupons, Groupon, and probably a few online sites that give out coupons. If you get the XTREME Exterior Unlimited Wash Plan, it is a monthly price, but, you can come back every day if you want. I treated my car with a free coupon. I had the coupon and I was going to be hiking the AP, so I would be West of home. It worked out well. They have them all over, so it is usually pretty accomodating.

carwash edit.jpg

These are the self-service vacuums where you can do the inside of your car that has a vacuum that will suck up beach sand from five feet away. Just kidding, I think it is only up to three feet. You can save a lot of money doing it instead of using their detail service.

What is the detail service? Glad you asked! A detail shop is another part of the carwash that offers many services or finishing touches They can hand wash your car, hand wax and buff it, steam clean your seats, polish the chrome, Wipe the knobs, buttons, polish the dash, spray the floor mats, and many other services. You can see below they are giving the car "the works" making it look almost new again.

car wash 13 edit.jpg

Step right up, and pay the lady! She will put a colored X on your car after you tell her what you want to be done. This will identify which service you are getting and the next station will take care of your needs. Sit tight and stay in the car. We are getting a drive-through edition.

carwash 6 edit.jpg

Driving your car to the entrance, an attendant directs you to position yourself to a spot that has a conveyor track. It latches onto your drivers-side tire, and you are directed to put the car in neutral and let the conveyor guide you through a tunnel. Woo-hoo! Let's go!

car wash 10 edit.jpg

There are rollers that come up behind the wheel when it is on the conveyor. Front-wheel pull pushes it through the tunnel, stopping momentarily through each station. Above is a prewash station, soaping up the different areas of the car and scrubbing the tires with a brush. I know there is a set of infrared sensors that sense the car's presence and measures how long the car is, so it can properly service it.

car wash 11 edit.jpg

These arches serve as stations to dispense soap, cleaners, and even wax. This has a piece of equipment close to the ground called tire applicators. These spray the tires with a solution that removes brake dust and cleaning up the tire in general.

Long strips of soft cloth move over the car in a circular motion, rubbing and loosening dirt and debris. As you are moving along, it stops along the way for more cleaning treatments. These are a set of scrubbers, working the entire car to loosen the dirt.

car wash 17 edit.jpg

The foam applicator is the fun part. Ask any kid! The foam is created by mixing a chemical cleaner, with water. There is a place where the foam has a coloring agent in it. I must say this is my favorite part!

STOP!! BRAIN TEASER AHEAD!!

Question:You are in a room that has three switches and a closed door. The switches control three light bulbs on the other side of the door. Once you open the door, you may never touch the switches again. How can you definitively tell which switch is connected to each of the light bulbs?

source

Answer: Turn on the first two switches. Leave them on for five minutes. Once five minutes have passed, turn off the second switch, leaving one switch on. Now go through the door. The light that is still on is connected to the first switch. Whichever of the other two is warm to the touch is connected to the second switch. The bulb that is cold is connected to the switch that was never turned on.

Many commercial car washes are safer for the environment than when we wash it ourselves. If I wash it, all the water goes where? Perhaps a storm drain? On the commercial side, they trap the drain, stopping the chemicals from contaminations. They are then removed from there to do the water treatment plan.

car wash 22.jpg

Another set of noodles coming up and the rinsing arch. It is a highly effective method for cleaning. Somewhere around here, there are undercarriage cleaners to wash the salt and grime from your undercarriage. In the winter they use salt, which may deteriorate your car, the station sprays upward, cleaning it from the ravages of winter. To be fair, we didn't have snow, but, they sprinkled salt anyway. What you are seeing is the car's camera showing what it looks like outside.

carwash 29 edit.jpg

Yes, please! Here comes the wax arch. Wax me, baby! Make me shine! Forming a water-resistant coating. This wax was made to work on glass, chrome and the metal surfaces of the car, unlike the hand-done wax jobs.

car wash 28 edit.jpg

Do you see the heating arches? They blow the care dry, very effectively. As you can see from the person ahead of me, they hand towel dry the cars off.

You come out of the tunnel, the device pulls you off the track and all is well with the world. I come to a full stop and put the car in drive and continue to the drying station.

It was a little awkward trying to get her picture, but, this is the best I could get. She did a fine job!! It still looks nice.!

My car wash doesn’t have that view from top. You fancy 😎

Working at the far wash 🧼

I was going to go with this one, but, I needed one that was active. :) Yes, this is the lesser of the car washes. Most are amazing! This is a smaller one I found while I was hiking to the West of me. It was a fun little place to do a post one.

Well, interesting anyway. Some of the things, I had no idea about.

Thanks for stopping by and leaving your words!

Here is my post for this week

https://peakd.com/hive-148441/@tattoodjay/market-friday-stone-bridge-farm

Haha! I know, right? :)) People say it is so every day, but, it shows you can use anything, right? I had to get my undercarriage done. Even though there was no snow, there was plenty of salt!

Thank you so much for stopping by and dropping your link!

That’s what I was thinking as well the car itself is fairly clean but need a good wash under it

If we wait a few years, they will probably make the entire car from plastic and then it won't matter.

Oh yeah, I learned something new and that is that I have to go to Detroit to sue the guy that invented the first car wash. Why, you may ask?
Well those beautiful soft long washing cloths snapped my car's roof aerial off.

Only joking, as I don't want to sue anyone and it's interesting to know all of the new facts that took place in Detroit.
I now only use the car washes that use high pressure water sprayers, but here in the place of 4 seasons in one day, it is impossible to keep a car clean.

A very informative and exciting post here, as I think that many has not been in that tunnel ride milady.

Happy Friday.

Cheers and !BEER

They only use the high pressure here, unless you go to the self-cleaning ones.

Detroit had so many, but, I didn't want to bore anyone. There is a sign on all of the carwashes here about taking them off. They usually take them off for you and put them back on. You wouldn't sue anyone. Neither would I. Things happen and usually, there is no malicious intent.

Four seasons in a day! Yikes! You win!

Well, it is not as exciting as most will be, but, I also wanted to show you could use simple, everyday things. Thanks for stopping by and leaving your words. You are the best!

#MarketFriday loves you!

Yep, you know me Lady Denise and you are right, I have no intentions of sueing anyone, same as you.

We only visit a car wash when it is an emergency, but two days later the car looks the same as we often travel on dirt roads.
Thankfully we have none of those cloth car washes here, else I would have had to buy a box of car roof aerials hahaha.

It was a great idea to use the simple things, as I like simplicity.

@papilloncharity also loves you!

That is me.. it is always the simple things in life that make me the happiest.

❤️❤️ Love that @papillioncharity❤️❤️

I am exactly the same Lady Denise and right from the beginning of Papillon 20 years ago, I kept the managing structure flat. As in no hierachy and everyone was on the same level. Still works very well to this day. Simple but very effective as people take ownership when they have equal voices and votes.

Thank you kindly and may the new week be kind to you my friend ❤️❤️❤️

Yes!! Managing that way allows for them to be proud and they do take ownership of it. I am so excited for you and Papillioncharity. I don't think anyone deserves it more than you.

Thank you and many prayers to you. ❤️

Ownership has taught us a lot milady, as so much well intended money was poured down the drain with well intended, but poorly communicated efforts. People don't like things forced on them.
I learned long ago that supporters of Papillon are not just kind givers, but great persons that should be seen as full partners in the work that we do. So I do not sell Papillon's credits to them, as they deseve it.

A young girl sent me a message stating that they had to do a charity project at school and she wanted my permission to present Papillon as her project. I remember her surprise when I said in my reply that she owns Papillon. Not a lie, as I registered Papillon as a community owned Non Profit.

Blessings to you this day my friend.

Wow, very nice car wash, modernized to the last, such places are hard to find in my hometown. Thanks for sharing glad you have a nice day.❤️

Here is the link to my entry for this week👇👇

https://peakd.com/hive-196308/@obrisgold1/marketfriday-payed-visit-to-a-new-restaurant-in-my-area

Thank you so much @obrisgold1 ! The carwash is a sight that is seen often in the bigger cities, although less in major cities, as the price of real estate is high.

Rural area here are the same. Less need.

Thank you so much for dropping you link here! Much appreciated!! Have an awesome day!

#MarketFriday loves you!!

Thanks and you too, do have a nice day❤️

As always, very interesting, Denise! In Israel, I have never seen anything like what you write at car washes. Four-color traffic light ???? Wow!!! I didn't know what it was. Whoa! This riddle of yours was too difficult for me. I have not guessed. But I am delighted with the answer to this.
https://ecency.com/hive-196308/@tali72/a-farm-of-flowers-trees

The four-color traffic light was first implemented in Detroit (the same place that had the first carwash) It was making a point of how Detroit, Michigan is a city of firsts. Car washes are popular here, but, many more people wash their own rather than go there as it can get expensive.

It is a nice place to go as we have winter and they sand and salt the roads to melt ice and snow, so it is a good way to clean the undercarriage of your vehicle to prevent rust. Of course, with so much made of plastic nowadays, soon we won't need to do that. :))

It was a pretty tricky riddle and nobody got it at my house. I will have to do an easier, but not too easy one next week. As always, thank you for stopping by and for dropping your link! It is much appreciated!

#MarketFriday loves you!

Great and important post for maintaining your vehicle Denise! Winters can be harsh on parts of the car unseen. Yep, even though the snow just missed us in many cases there was still plenty of salt spread around. I've only been to one car wash near here that offered the dryers after the wash. I was with my nephew and it was pretty cool! 😉💖
This is my post this week and have a wonderful weekend!!
https://hive.blog/hive-163772/@deerjay/some-new-additions-from-valley-view-farms

I love that they hand dry the whole thing, it almost feels like a buffing job. I always try to get in after the March winds blow the salt off the road or the street cleaners give it a wash down to bring the car in. Of course, the day of the rust buckets are almost gone, with all the plastic they use on the cars! When I was growing up, I can remember everyone checking out the car really well as we lived on the Atlantic seaboard where everything rusted. :)

You should call around or google the car wash places. Many of them do the drying by had unless it is through the gas stations.

Thank you so much for droppig your link! Much appreciated!

Oh wow this was a really creative post!!!! I wish I had thought of that. Then again not sure if I would want to pony up the cash when I got a son to do it. After all it is the season for "getting back" some of my investment of feeding him lol.

Thanks for the fun post and the history on the Motor City as well!

It was really a fun post to do. It has been a while since I have had something fun to post about, what with COVID and everything. Once I got the coupons that are always available, a game everyone loves playing, it wasn't too bad. And I took care of that winter undercarriage. How does Ben get your undercarriage? Spring for it, you won't be sorry. :))

I had no idea that the motor city was first in so many things. It is just too bad that all that glory was tainted. I still loved what it used to be like. Perhaps it will reach there again. Thank you for stopping by leaving your words!

Drive through car wash, now that is something I have not done in years...

Fun to put on some music and watch the gadgets doing their thing!

Day to day topic on whatever you pay for, this is not one I would have thought of Denise.

@tipu curate

Thank you for the tipu upvote!

Day to day or a sweet vacay... It's all good. :) I know, right? They are so fun to go through, especially with kids!

Check! Check! And a camera with this trip! I love watching those gadgets! Thank you so much for stopping over, Joan!

I hope you have a fabulous day!

Thank you so much! It is actually environmentally better to use the car wash. :) Thank you for dropping the link! I wish you a wonderful weekend!

That´s interesting. Never realized that the "car wash industry" has such a tradition in the US. I think in my country most people wash their cars themselves :D

Happy Market Friday to you and all your amazing MF community!

I would say that most people actually wash their own cars or let the rain do it. :)) They have smaller, cheaper places that they give away the wash when you fill your gas tank. That is where a lot of the washes come from. In the cities, there are a lot more high-end cars and people treat them like beloved mates. Going to the beauty shop (car wash) and getting all pretty.

I have no answers for it, but, I can tell you about it. :) Thanks for your generous support of the tag! Much appreciation.

I feel like I'm listening to an endorser of this car wash place. You gave us so much information that there's no reason for you to ignore this place. lol

Anyway, I guess this car wash is popular to operate longer. I don't know about that place and I have no car to be washed either. Even so, the place is nice and wide. I noticed that their way of cleaning was very good as well.

Thank you for stopping by and reading the post. It is true, I do like to give as much info as possible! :) It was a fun little post to do and it was a joyride going through as they squirted all sorts of different colored soap at me. :)

The attendants were a joyous bunch and I really think they like their jobs. Thanks for stopping by and leaving your words. I hope you are having a great weekend!

#MarketFriday loves you!

I'm the one who rather have the rain wash the car.

Hehe... Of course, you are! Well, we have snow here and the undercarriage must be cleaned at least once after it is all gone. Actually, we rarely get snow, but there is plenty of salt on the roads in case of ice in the winter.

Thanks so much for stopping in and supporting the tag!

You're welcome.

American nostalgia. I worked as a car detailer for many years before I left the USA. I never had the opportunity to work at a car wash, but I had many friends that did, and it seemed to be a much more social and jovial kind of environment.

Car detailing was always a bit depressing, especially spending 6 hours in a car interior in a dark building. Car washes always seemed fun to me, so many movies about them, etc.

I agree with you. My cousin owned a Fiat Dealership and his detailers liked their job because he paid them well, but, the car wash people were laid back and had a party/social/fun was had. I think because less stress with the customer service end.

Some people have high expectations and sometimes unrealistic expectations when they go to a dealershop. Thank you so much for stopping in and leaving your words! I hope all is well with you family!

It is fantastic!!!
I like the experience of driving through the car wash... I don't know what it is!
Maybe it is the sound of splish-splashing, LOL!

I do too! I love it and I play the car wash song while it was splish-splashing!
I know the kids used to love it and we played a kid song, they took turns picking
it.

This was a fun post to do.I hope I can find something else this week that is a little
bit fun~!! Thanks for joining in.

#MarketFriday lovs you!

And you too, @dswigle!
Hugs and Kisses 🥰🌺🤙!!

❤️ You are so sweet! Thank you!

I've never seen a car wash that was so bright and airy, with windows all along the way! When I was a child, we always washed our own cars. I didn't have my own car until I was nearly 24 years old. I washed it myself, too. But later on, when life got too busy, I began going to the car wash now and then. The chemicals that are put on the road to de-ice them in winter can be quite damaging to the underside of the car, so it's important to take it to a car wash now and then just to get that properly washed off. Other than that, I don't wash my car very often any more, because I live on a dirt road and my car is covered in dust after one trip in or out from the highway.

That is exactly why I go! I cannot wash the undercarriage of my car, so I let them do it, and then no worries. I wash my car sometimes and I get through the car wash sometimes. I don't have any worthy vices, so I never feel guilty about it. :)

Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving your words! It was good seeing you and I ran over to check out that post! :))

I'd really like to splurge sometime and get my car detailed. It gets so full of dust and dirt! But I wonder how long it would take for it to get filthy again? Hmmm.

On a dirt road? Probably not too long. But, if you were going away for the weekend, yes!
