Reading for Pleasure and other Trinkets - A Market Friday Story

in Market Friday3 years ago

This week I went to a used bookstore in Old Town. It is a little different than most of the secondhand bookstores that I have been in. Some books, some other paraphernalia and it decorates and gives it character. My father loved this store. They had things in it that he remembers using when he was a kid. This is it. Step right around the corner and you're in!

STOP!! BRAIN TEASER AHEAD!!

Question:I have keys, but no locks and space, and no rooms. You can enter, but you can’t go outside. What am I?

Answer! Can you guess??? A keyboard!

I have been fortunate to have so many of you posting different markets from all over the world! I cannot tell you how fascinating it has been, sitting here, watching the world parade by. So, yes! I would love to see yours! Don't forget to take photos wherever you happen to be shopping - whether it be the grocery store, the local marketplace, or even an art gallery. Wherever money is exchanged for a service or for merchandise. Be different if you wish! It does not have to be a traditional market! We will love it! I promise you! Don't forget to use the hashtag #MarketFriday and @dswigle.

I like the way the buildings reflect in the bookstore windows. Oh, yes! I am all about the reflections.

"Once upon a time" hits you right in the face. Brownie camera sitting on top of a stack of books, vintage posters, Candlestick telephones. I even saw an old singer sewing machine. I never even asked if they were for decoration or for sale, but, I will bet that they were there to set the stage for the books. I really liked the old license plates.

MF4.jpg

There are some very unusual things in here, but, I certainly feel like I stepped back in time. Very much implying that some aspect is similar to something that would have been common sometime in the past.I breathe in the smell of history.

MF5.jpg

Old books are everywhere. I love the feel, the touch, the way they smell. I do love my kindle, but, nothing will replace the binding of a book and the words framed in between those pages.

MF6.jpg

The entire store is a history lesson waiting to be told, a haven of treasures, a place where you could spend hours toiling through the maze of bookshelves. Cluttered, but clean, it feels like a warm hug when you walk in, an old friend if you will. I missed you during the height of COVID.

MF7.jpg

A plain white ceiling hardly rates a cursory glance. But cover it with richly patterned metal panels, and instantly it becomes an eye-catching feature. Oh, my!!! You can see how they do it here

MF 8.jpg

I have always loved books, they take me on an adventure, to another world, doing things I have never done, seeing things I have never seen.

What is your favorite book of all time?

What kind of books do you like to read?

MF9.jpg

As always, thank you for participating in #MarketFriday! The effort put into gathering and putting a post together is appreciated. Thank you for sharing your part of the world with all of us! Happy Friday! Have a wonderful weekend!

I love stores that have that feel.

I have always said all I needed to live a good life I learned from old Huck and Tom, and of course the lessons of the 100 Acre Wood.

There are not many modern authors that do it for me. All I can think of is Michael Perry, the brilliant author of such timeless classics such as "Coop" or "Population 485", and "Truck, A Love Story". I think he shares some of the wit and wisdom of Twain.

I do love stores that feel like home, in part, the comforting feel they have. Plus that second life that they give is just heartwarming to know that it has not been delegated to the trash bin just because you are through with it.

I like Twain and many of the classics, but, when "Tuesdays with Morrie" by Mitch Albom came out, I was hooked. I never like to miss the lesson these books have.

I try to add in a few new authors from time to time, but, I get that you like the tried and true ones that have a timeless quality. Thanks for stopping in and for your generous words. Have a great week ahead.

#MarketFriday loves you!

Denise, you invent and change, in the best sense. I mean the format of your blog. You make it more and more pleasant and interesting and it seems that you have found the ideal shape.
It was a great pleasure to read about books and the antique shop that brings back so many memories. Melancholy...
Melancholy! This is the feeling I have when I think of books.
I think of books as an old friend, who has been with me for more than half his life and has now gone somewhere ...
I can't choose the best book I read, I can choose many but I'm not sure I choose correctly. But I can say which book impressed me the most: "For ever and a day". I read it fifty years ago. I lost the book in a fire. Last year I found it in an antique shop.
I don't have the courage to reread it yet. I'm afraid it won't have the same impact on me.

I saw you say "thank you" in many foreign languages. I thought that if you say in Romanian it means that I am forced to write again in #marketfriday.

Thank you, Dan. @bluemoon. I think I have changed the format so many times, I have lost count. I am happy to hear that you like the flow of it. There are still a few things I need to change, but, I am not much of an artist, so change comes slowly to me. You are very gifted in adding little touches to your endings that are very appealing to the eye and keeps my attention.

Most of the memories in that shop are too old for personal memories, but, a few things I can remember my grandparents having. They held on to things much longer years ago, it was not a throwaway society like it is now. I guess that is why I love second-hand bookstores and even second-hand shops. It gives new life to something that is not done with life. How often do we have things that sit in our homes, never used and put away, out of sight. I donate these things. I f I am not using it and never will, I will donate it so another can get some use out of it.

Don't read that book! Hold on to the memory. I have read several books again that had an impact on my life, but, read them decades after the initial read. I was a different person then and looked at things differently. I don't think we can go back to that time, except in nostalgic memory. Otherwise, it spoils what I had to try to relive that moment. Even in a book. Of course, that is just me. You may be different. :)) And I don't think it will have the same impact. We may have grown from the book, but, we have also evolved because of it.

I almost used the Romanian thank you first!! I hope you saw it!

謝謝! Gracias! Merci! Danke sehr! 감사합니다 ! Takk! Toda! Спасибо!ありがとうございました! Dankie! شكرا ! hvala! Благодаря ти! dank je! Terima kasih! köszönöm! Dziękuję Ci ! mulțumesc! obrigado! Takk skal du ha!

How could I ever forget you? I had to chase you down and drag you back here. I am joking. I hope you have a wonderful weekend, Dan. I want to thank you for stopping by and reading my post, leaving your always kind words behind!

#MarketFriday loves you! ❤️

Thank you, Denise! I would have loved so much to write today in #marketfriday. I could not. It's almost midnight now and I can barely respond to your comment. I had a full day with my niece. On the other hand, here we are approaching Easter. It is a time of a lot of work, my wife is manic during this time to do everything for the house ... repairs, cleaning, painting ..., then next week the preparation of specific dishes begins. I'm sorry I didn't have time to write ...
I also like second-hand shops, for the same reasons as you.
The truth is that I am also afraid to reread the book. When I read it I was a teenager, now ...
I suffered with the movies. Movies that I liked a lot of decades ago, now some didn't tell me anything. That's right, we've changed, we're not the same anymore.
Thank you for putting "multumesc", I like to think that because of me to some extent, I know that there were more Romanians who wrote in #marketfriday. You forced me a lot with this and I hope that next Friday will be a post of mine.

Oh, seriously! It was for you, of course. But, no guilt about #MarketFriday. At this point, it is difficult to find something to post, especially with the problems you are having at the Markets. I have been to places like that and it is uncomfortable. But, most places here are ok. So feel no pressure, because it is only a tag and I interact with you without it, so I am not worried. :)

Second-hand shops are the best!

I think those books and movies fed a different intellect and a whole lot of emotions, at least for me. I am not sure I would corrupt the memory. It will never be the same if you read it again.

Again. No worries. This is for fun, not to worry about. 🙂 Have a wonderful weekend!

Hi! This ya my entry for this week.

Love second-hand shops! They have such character. And books are definitely a favourite. When I lived in the US one of my favourite rades, was the second hand book shops. My favourite book? Definitely the old classics. Dickens, Gaskell, the Bronte sisters. I totally agree with you getting the children to love reading. It wasn't hard with my two. Hubby and I are both bookworms (well we were before the homesteading took most of our free time) our children LOVE their books. Really enjoy your market friday @dswigle. Have a happy weekend

We love the classics here! We just cannot beat second-hand, giving another life. It feels good!

I read to the kids every day, every moment we had a lull in life and bedtime. We are bookworms here, so it was no stretch. During the elementary school years, homeschooling and all the activities, it was less time reading for me, I just cannot imagine how you have any.

I am glad you enjoyed the post! Have a splendid weekend!

I love secondhand flea markets and schops, the antique clock is fabulous how old can it be? nice to feel like, you are back in time.

I agree with you! Those second-hand shops are fun and the clock was old, although, now I will have to ask when I go back there. Thank you so much for taking the time to read my post and for joining in on the fun!

I appreciate that you dropped the link here! It is most helpful! Have a wonderful weekend!

I love that shop for sure if I ever visited there I would want to check it out so many things caught my eyes in your shots

Dont be shocked I actually did a Market Friday post this week https://peakd.com/hive-148441/@tattoodjay/market-friday-signs-downtown

I love second-hand shops in general, but, with books? Even better! There is still something about the feel of a book between my hands! I am not sure I can even explain it!

I am shocked! Where did you find the time?

Thank you so much for doing a post and for dropping your link! You are the best!! I hope you have an amazing day with Lulu and hello! It is only 43 degrees out this morning!

#MarketFriday loves you!

I have been doing some photo editing early morning while Lulu is still sleeping been watching tutorials and trying to expand and improve my editing

I just need to do an editing course and learn how it is done. Any recommendations?

What do you use for editing
I use Lightroom and photoshop and have just been searching and watching YouTube

Nothing much. I am using an old one called Picasa. It is not supported anymore, they phased it out. I have programs including Lightroom and Photoshop, but, haven't had time/energy to look at them.

I need to though. I need help with making the pictures better than they are.

I would suggest starting on lightroom it can do so much
this site has a bunch of tutorials that may help

Thank you so much for the lovely words and for dropping your link here! It is very helpful and very much appreciated! Have a great weekend!

Amazing store !!! It seems to me that such bookstores are almost museums. Today, reading books is not at all fashionable and young people are not very interested in this.
https://ecency.com/hive-196308/@tali72/buying-tea-online

I love second-hand stores! It gives merchandise a chance for another whole life. Actually, all of my kids read books, but, they have since the cradle. We have a lot of used books stores and they love perusing them. We all use kindles here, because electronics books are easier and cheaper, but, if any of us had to choose, we love the bound book and that special book smell! :))

Thank you so much for stopping by and dropping your link! Have a fabulous day!

What a wonderful combination, old books and other vintage things.

I'm always fascinated with the old tin ceilings. I don't know why.

I love those old tin ceilings! I actually saw some for sale in one of the Home Depot/Lowes home improvement stores, but, they weren't tin. They looked like it and I wondered if it would have the same effect once installed and painted, decided they wouldn't, and passed. They were expensive too! They are fascinating and so decorative! I love the way the Victorians made everything with great curb appeal. Cheerful and sometimes whimsical. Unless it was naughty. They did that too.

I have seen real ones and I don't think it would look like anything but an expensive fake.

Old books and vintage objects. I love that bookshop and always look forward to going to it. Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving your words! Good morning to you! Looking forward to the weekend! Oh! No freeze here last night. My peonies and friends live!

@MarketFriday loves you! ❤️

I hung some "wall paper" one time on a ceiling. It was solid white and now I am not sure what it was made of, but it was 3D so the design was raised. It was hung with a clay paste and when dried, you painted it like normal and it looked exactly like the real thing.

I always wondered what would happen if you got tired of it and what it would take to get it back off, but that was a problem for another day (or owner)...right?

I haven't been around the outside of the house to access the damage or lack of it. Not much can be done now either way.. .right?

Oh! I know what you are talking about. Many people painted wallpaper that was on the walls too. It was way easier than peeling it off, right? I have taken some of that off and it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I poked holes in it and wet it with a spray bottle and used a spatula to take it off.

Okay, it wasn't easy, but, doable.

"Supposedly" if the wall was prepped before the paper was hung, it should be easy to strip, however, the industry didn't know all about that for a long time, found out the hard way, but sometimes still didn't prep to save money. What did they care about when it came time for change, which always happens. I have stripped some that came off easily in nearly whole sheets and others that every little tiny smidge had to be forced off. It is impossible to tell which way it will be till you try to get off that first piece ! I have some in this house that is still smooth and hung well that would probably allow painting over easily without stripping, but some other, that REALLY needs to come down, whose seams are loose and .... well.... what a job ! That's why it has not been done yet.

In my current situation and age, I would much rather throw some money at someone else and have them do it. LOL !! Easy Peasy.....

Or... do a strip a day or so... I have had the tiny little peelings that are as big as a fingernail - in the entire room.

Yikes.

There are some things now that I do the same. I would rather hire it out than spin my wheels on it. Easier! And I am all about that!

Thank you introduce the bookstore in Old Town. It reminds me feeling like to go the library in this weekend..:)))

That is so cool! I hope it does inspire you to go to the library! I love the library and would bring my children every week to select a special book for them to read during the week. They have acquired a taste for reading and it is part of their lives still.

This was a second-hand store with used books, but, it makes me happy to see them have a second life like that, Thank you so much for stopping by and reading my post. I wish you a wonderful weekend @cherryng!

#MarketFriday loves you! ❤️

I used to love going to this 2nd hand bookstore but it was nothing like this

I love the "clutter" ... is that a coal iron I see? (Image #6)

It is an iron! :) Great eyes. I love going into second-hand bookstores and sometimes, even second-hand shops. It gives me great pleasure to see items being given a second (or third) life, rather than sitting uselessly at someone's house, or worse, being tossed away!

The bookshops around here have character and individuality. Some have coffee shops attached, others, reading rooms or reading corners, one even has a book club that meets there.

I love this kind of clutter. :)) Thank you for stopping by and reading my post, leaving your kind words behind.

#MarketFriday loves you! ❤️

We love you and Market Friday right back :D

Awwww! So sweet! I love you people! ❤️

Thank you for sharing such an interesting place with us @dswigle , I love the smell an antique shop, it has that special richness of antiquity. Just love it.have a great day.

I think that you have put that in such a perfect way!! "Special richness of antiquity" Yes! That!

I love second-hand book shops, or any shop like that, giving a second life to something that is not done living. It doesn't get any better than that, in my opinion! I am so glad you stopping in and left your words behind. I hope you have an amazing weekend!

#MarketFriday loves you! ❤️

Its my pleasure @dswigle I really know what you are talking about. It is only a pleasure replying to kindred spirits. I wish an amazing weekend as well.

Thank you!! ❤️

I could practically smell that old book smell through your photos. 😊

Hmmm! Hmmmm! Good! It's addictive!! Thanks for dropping by!
