Will our little angel Ginger survive the surgery tomorrow?

For most, pets have been considered a part of the family. In fact, most pets are even spoiled more than the children. We treat them special because they provide us companionship and happiness. As much as we would not want our dogs to grow old, we have to face the fact that they do die eventually. With old age comes a lot of health complications especially with dogs. No matter how much we aspire them to die of old age peacefully, its not that simple and easy. Same goes for GINGER, our fur baby in the family.

Ginger turned 12 years last March but we always celebrate her birthday every June together with me and my brother's birthday. Since it was the month of June when she came to our family and she was already 3 months old by that time. She came into my family during the most difficult time of our lives. She is our light. She is our joy. During the past 12 years, never have we imagined though that it would come to this.

Yes, as what you see on the photo, she has a massive lump on her stomach. Its a mammary tumor. For sure, you would come to ask how such thing happen and why we didn't do anything right away. Well last year, when Dad already noticed a very small lump growing from her breasts, Dad had Ginger checked up at the vet. The vet however assured Dad that it was just nothing, said it was normal so we took the vet's word for it. (Big mistake)

Months passed then came March this year and the lumps started growing visibly. I was worried but Dad always reverted back to what the vet said. Then we came home from enjoying our Holy Week holidays last April to find Ginger's lumps growing rapidly. I decided to take her to another Veterinary Clinic. I had to use up what was left from my salary after I resigned just to have all necessary tests taken to see what was really wrong with her.

But even before the doctors took the test, they already knew.. I told them if it was possible to have the lump removed, they told me that due to Ginger's age it was too risky. We did the CBC and other tests, and besides that lump, Ginger has Stage 3 Kidney disease. Just when I thought the worst part was the tumor. They gave me some medications and a new diet for Ginger. We would try to bring her results to a more normal range in a week for them to endorse Ginger for surgery.

A week passed, sadly Ginger's results didn't improve and that Clinic just advised us to continue with her Kidney diet to prolong her life. It's the Kidney disease and not the tumor that's going to take her life they said. Hope crumbled. Told my family the news. Sadness creeped in. We had to make peace with her condition and let her go when the time comes. Hard to do so. Once in awhile, I just tell Ginger that if she needs to go, we will be okay.

Just when all hope seems lost, my younger sister's friend was a veterinarian. They discussed about Ginger. The doctor informed us it is possible however we should know and accept the risks. We told him that we are no longer hoping that she will be cured but for the lump to be removed. We are just hoping she could spend her last months not being burdened by it and we would be able bring her to the beach one last time. Selfish as it sounds, but we do want to have a few more happy moments with her.

However, we have already made peace as well if she has to go anytime soon.

Dad was still reluctant because of the cost of the surgery but we told him we can't have regrets in the end, that we did everything for her as pay back for all the happiness Ginger gave us for the past 12 years. So he gave in.

For the past weeks, me and my mom was just prepping Ginger to be ready for her surgery scheduled tomorrow, May 18. We religiously followed her diet and medications. And her results yesterday improved and we had a go signal from the doctor for the surgery.

I am hopeful but at the same time at peace with whatever happens tomorrow. Will keep you posted and hopefully I can share some positive news in two days time.

I know Ginger understands what is about to happen. She knows and feels it too. All I asked of you if you read this post to send us some positive intentions and energy for tomorrow's surgery. We need it.
