Blocked in China: Congrats, Hive! / Gratulation, Hive!

in #hive3 years ago
Obviously, Hive is now important &/or influential enough to get blocked by the CCP. Time to celebrate?!Offenbar ist Hive inzwischen wichtig &/oder einflussreich genug, um von der KPCh geblockt zu werden. Ein Grund zum Feiern!?

Don't know how long Hive has already been blocked. I only noticed it a few days ago, after I had sent a friend in China my latest masterpiece. She replied that she couldn't see it. Hence I checked on 'Blocked in China?' whether it had finally happened:Weiß nicht, seit wann Hive geblockt wird.

Yes, it did. This probably won't have much of an effect on the Hive members from China, since most of them probably already used VPN's to access steemit. But for any expansion plans in China, this is a major blow, of course.Jawoll, geblockt.
IIRC, when Hive forked, there were some plans of expansion into the Chinese market. In my opinion, they were pretty delusional from the start, because emperor Xi & the CCP would never let a site with user-generated content grow into anything substantial without proper censorship. But these Hive plans are dead now, anyway.
Well, fuck the CCP! What it shows, though, is that Hive obviously has caught the eye of the Chinese commies & they consider it big or important enough to get blocked. & that's an honour.

Well, I'm going to be posted there soon. That's going to suck lol.

Not necessarily, it depends on your preferences & habits. If you're prepared & lucky, you can have a great time. Just don't expect a great internet experience. Better prepare computer & smartphone before you go: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Firewall#Methods_for_bypassing_the_firewall
ExpressVPN seems to work well, but it's a bit suspicious because it also often keeps working when all other foreign VPN's have problems.

Privacy is another problem. If you value privacy a lot, better take a burner phone with you (on which you can install eg. spyware like WeChat). & log off all social media before you get to the border. It's improbable, I think, but they might check your smartphone.

But peakd.com and ecency.com still work

I only checked hive.blog.
But anyway, as I said, it's about the reach in China. As soon as the censors see a certain threshold reached - may be access numbers, interaction, or whatever - they block a site. So, peakd & ecency probably haven't made the list yet. If they keep growing in China, it's just a matter of time.
