Hive Energy Consumption

in #hive3 years ago

Can someone create a quick excel/numbers sheet to display the energy consumption of Hive?

Would have to be filled with:

  • top 25 witnesses (2 witness nodes each - 32GB-64GB)
  • top 25+ (1 witness node each - 16GB-32GB)
  • plus seed nodes (estimated at ~12 - 32GB)
  • (maybe) RPC Nodes (https://beacon.peakd.com/)

Did I miss something?

The idea behind this is that Elon Musk has seemingly tanked the market by criticizing Bitcoin's energy consumption.

And it would be good to have some data to show how energy-efficient, as well as resilient, Hive is.

Sort:

Here the consumption of a server hosting:

  • 1 Hive top20 witness backup node
  • 1 Hive-Engine witness node
  • 1 Hive testnet node

Server has Dual Intel Xeon X5650 2.666Ghz CPU and is not a recent energy-optimized model.

Does this mean it is about the same as leaving a 100W light bulb on?

No, it means it's 20% less than a 100W light bulb!

:D

Thanks! This helps me visualize it well. I am not great with numbers, so being able to tie it to something I can understand is useful. Perhaps I will add a post and still your graph ;)

@shmoogleosukami already did the calculations on his witness node, and came up with less than a watt.

Though he's not top 20, it's certainly a start.

Here's what it would be in kw/h as well. :)

I don't have any numbers for my servers, but power consumption is very negligeable. That's the whole point of PoS and DPoS, not to use power at all. Even when replaying, it's a single threaded process, which doesn't even scratch the full potential of the CPU. As for my full RPC node (hived+hivemind) it barely uses 5% of the CPU. Also, the active witnesses are around 100, a far cry from the tens of thousands of PoW miners out there for all those high profile blockchains wasting energy.

Hive witness node has a power consumption similar to parked Tesla Model S with Sentry mode turned on.

The idea behind this is that Elon Musk has seemingly tanked the market by criticizing Bitcoin's energy consumption.

And he is absolutely right about it. Bitcoin's energy consumption is like a completely new country on Earth. It is huge.

Focusing only on energy consumption doesn't give an accurate picture of what's actually happening. Energy from hydroelectric is either used or it's wasted. The Bitcoin miners using hydroelectric aren't building dams and forcing rivers to run harder, they're using energy that would otherwise be wasted.

Surely, They knew about this before they bought it. Probably trying to pump the price of their holdings. All that said I agree with them and believe it is another good selling point for Hive.

PR stunt maybe :D

This would be hella interesting, I imagine it would be several 1000x magnitude less. You could have a witness node ran entirely off green power too, whereas watt for watt I imagine this gets harder (solar for example) with POW coins like Bitcoin. Average top end ASIC/GPU miner is drawing 100/180W*> MIN, so I guess you could squeeze 2 miners per solar panel for example, if it output around around 265-350W...

Michael Saylor understands crypto better than Elon:

already answer him :)

Yep that would be great...
I tweeted to his post at the morning recommend hive and just now again under his post for energy consumption.
Hoping to be noticed somehow ;)

Namaste 🙏

Elon is full of shit, he just wanted to dunk the price after his sell off so that he could buy back again next quarter. I can't believe people are letting him get away with openly manipulating the market. He is no friend to Crypto... Even the various dog coins.

I've just read @tarazkp and needed to come and read @therealwolf post, now Elon / Tesla's announcement was interesting to us as BTC crash but also car manufacturers and crypto whether it for R and D or purchasing, the fact that if a crypto hammers power then its not a good luck for them.

Therefore can the likes of HIVE have a real world purpose moving forward? What we'd like to see is using these pay for EV charging, is this possible? if so it would get the coin recognised and we'd be using it to charge frequently.

If anyones an idea how to make this happen please comment :) or if's not feasible or possible please comment 😀

We'd love to make this reality with the Powers of Hive and we'd create vids and shout it from the roof top, thank you @therealwolf -
