Building the chicken bee and duck enclosure

in #homestead11 months ago

After fencing a third of an acre in for a garden, we are now building out a 30x30 foot enclosure to keep some birds and bees. Keeping the hives inside the enclosure keeps them from getting attacked by bears, and the chickens protect the bees from small hive beetles that can cause massive damage to bee colonies.

The enclosure will attach to my third acre fenced in area, so when they are being supervised they can roam the garden and get more space than what is just in their 30 by 30 foot enclosure.

We run a string to give us a straight line to drive stakes into the ground.

Its hard to see but we leveled the area a little better, doing it by shovel was rough.. Wish I had the skid steer, will get one soon.

We drove in posts that will hold up vertical 7.5 foot poles.

The poles will hold the horizontal supports and then we will attach the fencing.

Some were crooked but we straightened them later.

With the entire 30 by 30 foot area staked out, its time to start building inwards.

Starting with attaching the overhead pipes and connectors, we build a ring around the parameter.

As my farm hand works on the frame I work on building the door we will have to walk through.

I dont know how he does it without sunglasses on, its so bright working up there.

We have to stretch the pipes to fit them in some cases since we did not get the alignment perfect on each post.

But over time we adjust and fix it as we go and soon enough its half way complete. By day two the frame was mostly complete.

On day 3 we take a step back and can really see that frame coming together.

The part we worried about the most is up next, putting the fence up on top of the enclosure. The roll weighs probably 100 pounds, but together we lift it up on the truck.

Next we climb up on the edge of the truck bed and he gets on a tall ladder so we can start rolling the fence out slowly.

Being careful it does not stray to far to one side or the other. We roll it across the entire enclosure.

This will keep predators out like hawks, kestrels, eagles and other birds of prey attacking my birds inside. And will help keep out other ground based predators as well.

We take a break half way through the day, there are wild blueberry bushes flowering all over the property so my farm hand shows me some he noticed recently.

I follow him down the hill and we check out some wild low bush blueberry bushes.

Getting back to work after exploring the woods we roll out more more of the fencing on the roof.

My farm hand says I never get good pictures of myself doing work so he took my camera phone and did some shots of me working.. haha

Rolling the fencing along the walls is hard work. You have to kick the bottom of the fence roll, while letting to fall forward.

We roll the fencing outwards and stake it down to keep anything from borrowing in or out.

Adding rocks later may be a good idea. But its nice we got the enclosure all up now. Next is to start building out the chicken and duck coop, and adding benches and all the gardening beds. Lots of wood work ahead, will post about that soon.

Now this is a proper Chicken and duck farm.

Kewk, i wanna hear some of your crazy duck stories.

Also are you going to use the same chicken feeds and setup for your ducks? Or will the ducks have something special UWU.

Ohh right are you going to get Broiler/Layer/ or free range chickens?

Yeah bud I think it will be. I hope to get some this year so soon enough there will be much duck silliness.

Honestly I am not sure about the feeding methods and chicken type. Let me know what you think I should do and get for breeds.

I will definitely have some questions for you once I get started. But as of right now just building out their house is next. Then gonna get the farm animals.

That is one awesome project Solo.!

I am no stranger to fencing as it is a never ending project here at the Pookyville Cat Ranch.

So I know how much work you are doing. It looks great guys. Thanks for sharing.!!

Fencing is something I will probably need to do more of soon. And glad I know about these kits so I can build them really easily. But I can also build the more traditionally using concrete posts and timbers.

Best of luck with your fence progress and thanks bud glad to share what we do here..

Greetings my friend, great how you are getting that enclosure for the animals, totally a good job, I imagine that every time you look at everything you have achieved so far, you must feel very satisfied, I say this because that's how I feel when I achieve something and observe the result, again I congratulate you, you are an entrepreneur that motivates anyone.

It is very true friend @ancnoticias the friend @solominer is a great entrepreneur, I always highlight him, he has been developing publications about his gardening work, which has been very educational, for those of us who know what life is like in agriculture. successes to you

Totally my dear @omarrojas, this is why I follow your publications and I have seen your whole process and you really have very clear what you want and best of all you do something you are passionate about, nothing like that, @solominer is an example that if you can achieve what we want as long as we work hard to get it.

Hey bud, thanks.. I hope it will help us a lot in keeping the animals safe.

Yes I am, really enjoying the fruits of my labor.. Still lots to do but glad to have a lot of it already done so I can just sit back and see what I have done already.

Wow, I admire you! Protecting your animals and bees...
It so much work! Onwards...

Fuck those birds. Looks like a great spot for about 9 cannabis plants..

Hehe.. do not want anything eating my farm animals. Those hawks do great hunting mice out in the fields though.

It would indeed be a sweet area to grow them, they may start growing through the top fence hehe.

they may start growing through the top fence

Hopefully. Let me know if you need help smoking all that.

That's great man, you haven't posted any farm news for a long time and I almost messaged you on Discord. How many chickens are you planning to buy?

Ah yeah, we had some relatives in town about a week ago. So I am a little behind on blogging.. haha

Thanks man, glad to know people are thinking about me.

I think between 4-6 or so should be a good start

Not only bears, but you also got airborne attacks. Holy fuck! I never thought farming could get that crazy xD
Our only issue here is having to fence the chickens, because they are the ones cusing the damage.

Hah yeah we have some badass predatory birds here, so need that protection from the top as well..

Hehe I feel ya, thats why they will live in the 30x30 enclosure and only in the veggie garden while supervised otherwise they may start eating my grown veggies.

What is this type of fencing called? I had chickens but will not get any more because bobcats and coyotes got the ones that I had. I also have Hawks that get the chickens so this is the type of fence I need. I was letting them free roam but would lock them in a small coop at night, the bobcats would come into my yard in the daytime.

It seems like everything wants to eat them, sucks you lost some.

My plan is to let them roam in the 1/3 acre area during the day while being watched and then going back into the 30x30 foot enclosure and then into a shared chicken and duck house I have yet to build.

thanks for the tokens!

thank you for the info.

It's looking great! I just did this for my bees, garden and chickens. Lots of work and continues to be. Love seeing others put together amazing homesteading and self sufficiency projects like this.

Thanks, oh cool.. well hope its protecting them good. I hear so many sad stories about chickens getting snatched in the night by predators. And dealing with small hive beetles myself in a previous honey bee project I can say its a needed protection having chickens.

Best of luck with your setup..

a very extraordinary activity.. one day it will become a promising business. hopefully later there will be many jobs and can employ many people.

One day we may just grow that big, but for now we just want to feed everyone on our little farm.. then we plan on growing more.

It's quite a job, what you've done @solominer , after fencing off a third of an acre for your garden, now with the construction of the 30x30 foot enclosure, of course, to keep some birds and bees. It is true to keep the hives inside the enclosure, it protects them from bears, at the same time it achieves that the chickens protect the bees from the small hive beetles that can cause continuous and pernicious damage to the bee colonies. It is an excellent job that you do and very educational for those who have these problems in their gardens. In wishing you success, allow me to invite you to my recent publication, where I highlight my life as a film actor, in my city of Cumaná. Greetings.

It sure was a lot of work. But I think it will be well worth it long term. That is my hope the chickens indeed help the bees with the beetle problem. We shall see.

That's how it will be dear friend @solominer with so much care you have done, insects or other discomfort will not occur in your garden, you are a man of faith and work, in this sense all your effort will be rewarded. I wish you much success and I am very grateful for your visits to my publications, which is very important to me, in terms of my motivation, because I do better every day and for the profits I get, to be able to buy my medicines. successes

Hi @solominer

I realized towards the bottom of your post that the pictures display more than a day's worth of work, at least it seems so.

Did you already know we plan to Open Source DBuzz?

Yep, this took around four days to complete. We did it over the course of a week or so.

I am totally amazing at the amount of land you have there. Plus you’re always busy with new projects! I’d love to be able to keep bees, just cause I !love honey so much 😁💙

It sure is a lot of land to keep up with. Glad most of it is just forest and I just leave it be. But the areas I am building out are quite big as well.. haha

Yep, always something to do here on the farm. Ah nice, I used to raise bees so I hope to do it again really soon. Its lots of fun and indeed the honey is quite tasty.. Just wait until you hold a bee frame up filled with honey, the smell is amazing.
