DO GOATS REALLY SNACK ON TINS?

"Your goats eat better than I do AND get more of your attention! If they don't start to earn their keep, I'm going to eat them" These were the rather unloving words of my husband 8 years ago. Despite giving me a goat as a wedding present, he soon realized that a bunch of flowers probably would've cost less!

While I love animals there's no hiding my total obsession with all things goatie. These four legged kids are the best pets IMO. Apart from the fact that they actually return the love, it comes with interest, in the form of their delicious milk. I know - I know. You have probably had that nasty "goatie" experience with milk. But you haven't tasted the milk my goats provide!

How the goat and the milk is treated is of vital importance. First rule. DO NOT FEED THEM TINS! Because that would show your ignorance of the tastes of a goat and probably earn you a head butt! Goats need fresh, clean water. Water converts to milk. The milking facilities, and milker need to keep things as hygienic as possible. I use only natural....ummm...everything. So I make my own udder balm and soap, as well as spray solutions. Some of my essentials are essential oils. And hydrogen peroxide to sterilize equipment.

And on that natural note. The rubbish fed and injected into goats commercially also plays a role. (Don't get me started on the cruel battery style existence many live) My goats free-roam and when I need to treat them, whether parasites or injuries or ailments, it's all herbal. Another key rule to sweet goats milk is chilling it as quickly as possible after milking.

Having the buck free ranging with the girls is not such a good idea (easier said than done). Their o'dour toilet definitely taints the milk. When I drink (other people's) goatie milk all I see is the male pee on himself. Gag.

Even if you aren't so big into drinking goat milk the cheeses are amazing. And so is goats milk soap. But those are subjects for another day. For now I need to go and kiss and cuddle the four legged kids. Because, after all, what is life without some goatie love?

When I finished breastfeeding my kids, I transitioned them over to goat milk via a farmer who was very much wanted it to be seen in a different light than what was being sold at the grocery stores. It really is as close to mothers milk as you can get. I had a brother that was allergic to milk when he was born. They put him on soymilk, which, at the time was pretty gross in baby formula. I have to wonder if goats mild would have worked? (my mom didn't breastfeed him for other reasons)

The cheese is yummy too! I am so happy there are people like you in the world that not only want these things, but, acto on it. I admire you for that. It is such an interesting way of life that you chose and there is so much more to 'homesteading" than merely going organic.

I love goats, especially when they are brand new!!! They are adorable!

Denise that is special. I'm glad you and your children were able to benefit from goats milk. Yes, it is quite amazing that it is so similar to breastmilk. Before the drought I used to do a monthly delivery to the city of an entire trailer of frozen goats milk. 100's of litres. And most of it for lactose intolerant babies.

What's not to love about goats? I have to admit I'm quite passionate about my four legged kids. And yes, brand new "out the box" they are SO much more adorable

Yes!! They are so cuddly and soft. Each time I see one, I want to take it home!!! I could have a hundred by now. OK... a thousand!

So many interesting facts about goats! Loved the education and all of your fun photos ;D

Interesting! I am not a goat milk fan but my husband and kids certainly enjoy it. It's the after taste I can't get over. I had no idea so much could affect the flavour. I do enjoy goat cheese though. I hope you do some posts on your natural products; I am hoping to clean up my faux natural products (aka grocery store marketing as clean and earth friendly). -Aimee

To be honest as much as I love goats and goat cheese I still battle with the actual milk. But I'm not a big cow milk fan either although I love everything else dairy ;) I'm definitely going to be doing some natural posts. Not sure which there's so much. Soap. Body butters. Cheese. Fermented foods......

I don't mind cow milk but I don't drink it often. I, like you, enjoy all things cheese! I am planning to visit a town called Fernie later this year and they have an amazing cheese store; stopping there is a must.

I will keep my eye out for your posts! -Aimee

Ohhhh i love them, and they look so sweet. Hahaha stealing the glasses !
