Kiss Me, I'm Irish (...by Deportation): My Hive Introduction

in #introduceyourself2 years ago (edited)

Hello, fellow Hivers!

20220322_132359.jpg

First off, my sincere thanks to my @splinterlands guildmate @azircon for encouraging me to check out all things Hive and to begin posting here. I hadn't realized Hive was so extensive and I'm thrilled to be a part of it (more on that a little later)!

It also just occurred to me I should have been using this post's title line on dating websites... and it is true, my father's side is mostly English, having hailed from somewhere along the English/Scottish border. Having had the misfortune of being born into poverty, one of my ancestors resorted to horse thievery, going about it poorly, hence the deportation to Ireland and eventual immigration to Canada and the United States.

I've spent most of my life living in the great state of Michigan, very much to the north, close to the Canadian border. What we lack in urban amenities are made up by stunning natural landscapes carved during the ice age, rare flora, incredible hiking trails, a local community dedicated to preserving and promoting the area, and good neighbors who will do damn near anything for each other. While it's sometimes difficult living where the height of culinary culture is the Chinese buffet 30 miles away that also serves sushi (it's really good sushi. also the only sushi), it's simple and peaceful here, and given how crazy our world is and can be, I enjoy the slowed-down pace.

A little more specifically about me:
I recently turned the ripe middle age of 42, so for you Douglas Adams fans out there, I've convinced myself that this is the year I'm discovering the meaning of Life, the Universe, and Everything. Or at least unlearning some bullshit. I married young, and we were lovely but ultimately very wrong for each other, although we did make three incredible children who are all talented in different ways and have wildly different personalities. I have no siblings so it's been a such a trip for me to see them grow into themselves.
I graduated from the University of Michigan (go Blue!) with a degree in English Language and Literature, with a focus on creative writing (poetry), so naturally I've spent most of my career running fundraising databases. 🤡
I'm a lifelong gamer from Atari and Commodores to PCs today, a total nerd, and ofc Star Trek > Star Wars. Sorry, not sorry.

I became a part of Hive after researching p2e gaming and deciding @splinterlands was the place to be, even though I had no experience in deck building games. At first, I found a cool card game that I thought would be a lot of fun to play. Soon, I was investing my time, my funds, and my energy into this endlessly complex ecosystem that's still blowing my mind! One of my favorite aspects of modern gaming has been finding great communities of players that have become friends and partners in crime, and I was fortunate enough to find a great guild in @shield-of-glory that emphasizes just that camaraderie in addition to challenging me to improve as a strategic player.

And then Hive itself - holy crap! I hadn't realized there was so much here! I assumed at first that it was just the blockchain powering my new favorite game and its associated marketplaces. Now that I'm digging into the Communities, and seeing all of the social aspects, it's such an incredible way to connect with people all over the world. I've been on a pretty focused journey of self-improvement over the past year, and look! - there's a community dedicated to that very topic. I'm really excited to share my own perspectives on gaming, food, my own journey, my community, and to engage with everyone else here doing the exact same things.

So, hello! I'm pumped to be here, looking forward to meeting a lot of great people, and having awesome conversations. Thanks so much for reading my intro, and I hope to see you around here!

Hi mate, welcome to Hive.

My mate @azircon let me know you'd arrived and I wanted to come and say hello personally.

I'm not into Splinterlands, so don't ask me about that as I'm clueless, however if I can help with anything never hesitate to shout out and ask, I'm happy to help where I can.

It sounds like you've got a good deal to share so all the best with it and I'll see you around the place, I'm sure.

Yeah, Splinterlands we got him covered. It's the greater hive he need support. As you can see he is not like the rest of us moron gamers and has a natural talent for writing.

@misterrogers Galen here is one of the most prominent writer at hive (not to mention his younger brother Taraz). Galen also runs the weekend engagement which I highly recommend to get involved. An easy way to get to know people.

Azir, it seems moron gamers and moron writers attract one another so...All is well in the world. 😊

Thanks for the kind words, I look forward to seeing more from @misterrogers.

Galen, hi! Thank you so much for the warm welcome and for stopping by. It's so funny that you did; I found one of your posts on the self-improvement community and was planning to share my thoughts last night, but decided I was way too tired to write anything coherent 😂

I'm really looking forward to joining the moron writers club too lol and I'm sure I'll see you around!

Coincidence indeed!

It's good to make your acquaintance and aim sure I'll see more of you. I apologize in advance for anything you may see or read on my posts...I'm not responsible. (Kind of am, but only for the good stuff.)

#moronsunite

Likewise! I'll enjoy reading both what you're responsible for and what you aren't 😂

Thanks, Azircon! I'll definitely check that community out. Thank you so much for making this connection.

Welcome to web3 ;)

Thank you so much! I'm thrilled to be here and learning all I can.

@dalz here is one of the most prominent 'data scientist' of hive, lack of any better word :)

Oh!!! Yeah, yeah! @dalz, you published those incredible data sets on posting & voting rates by day and by time, didn't you? The wannabe data analyst in me was salivating over those!

Haha ... yea thanks!
Great to hear new people actually read them and find them useful!

Dude. Super cool shit. Actually sit-down-and-think-for-a-while data. I can't fathom the amount of time and work you put into just that one post.

Welcome to Hive,

Sounds like you might like the @ecotrain community - check out their weekly questions, and if you post about splinterlands use the oneup and spt tags to earn those tokens!

If you want to power up save it for Hive Power up day (hpud tag) 1st of next month (every month too).

Glad you found the place!

!PIZZA

Thank you for the welcome!

@ecotrain looks amazing! Thanks so much for the recommendation!

May I ask a little more about tags and earning tokens? Would I just add "oneup" and "spt" at the bottom of my post in the tag area like I did with the "introduceyourself" tag? Or is there an article here that I could read that would better explain things?

Also, I think I'm saving all of my rewards for Hive Power and plan on doing that for a good while.

I'm glad I found Hive too. Thanks for the pizza and for the recommendations - I appreciate your advice and time!

Interesting question about an article - the Discord might be easies! https://discord.com/channels/821706818517991445/893743559956639774

Awesome, thank you so much!

Welcome! I hope you enjoy Hive and all its many aspects. It is a rabbit hole in itself.

All hail to the little bit of Scottish in you (nearly Scottish, however close your fathers line was to that border) :OD

Thank you! I'm enjoying discovering all it has to offer - I think I'll be at it for a while!

I like to think there was some Scottish mixed in to be bloodline - just enough to make sure I butcher the accent at every attempt :D

There is almost nothing finer than a butchered Scottish accent, lol!

It is great to see that at least some people can tear themselves away from Splinterlands for long enough to explore the rest of Hive! :D

Welcome in and it is nice to put a face to the name that will likely beat me in game :)

Haha! It's fantastic to find something as engaging as Splinterlands to tear me away from it! Besides, my ECR is completely in the gutter... 😝

Thank you for the warm welcome - and don't count on the beating, I'm still pretty new! Do you play in Diamond and Champion League?

ECR is a myth as @tarazkp will tell you from his early days, but as we mature as players we begin to learn the magic of Vogon poetry and begin to understand the true meaning of ECR @misterrogers

Yeah, I don't worry about such things as ECR!

2nd time @azircon has mentioned Vogon in these comments. I must investigate.
I want to care about ECR... but playing is just so damn fun!

I'm still pretty new! Do you play in Diamond and Champion League?

Diamond and struggle to get up to Champion before EOS, so I don't have to spend too much time in Gold - unless i lose the first battle! :D

I have been playing for about 7 or 8 months now - but since I don't care about ECR at all - I have put in some time behind the wheel :)

OMG. I'm just two months in, and every season I lose that first battle lol. I think my 3rd season I started in Gold 1 and got knocked down to Silver 3 before I clawed my way back up again. And yes, the struggle to reach Champion is real. 😂

Lol - I thought I was playing a lot!! you are only two months in and have played half the rounds I have already!

I may have a problem lol

Thank you so much for the warm welcome, and a giant hug right back to you! I'm so enjoying my time here, meeting fantastic people, and seeing what all Hive has to offer. If I ever get back over to Europe, I would love to see Scotland. I hope you can spend some time there some day as well, that would be a beautiful journey.

Hey guildmate, great to meet you outside the splinterlands metaverse and hear your story! I still have my commodore 64 up and running so if we ever get the pleasure of hanging out in person we'll rock some old games, tho original nes is still my favorite throwback system to play and that still holds up for me (with nostalgia boot of course).

No way! You're actually rocking the OG Odell Woods and Odell Lake? Absolutely man, that would be such a blast. I spent so many hours with the original NES, and since then with emulators on the PC and on the Wiis. Still so many games I've yet to play.

Welcome, have some !BEER and !PIZZA

Oooooo! Thank you!!!

Welcome it's great that you were encouraged to introduce yourself with the goal of getting to know you, HIVE is a really very broad ecosystem and that is not limited to just Splinterlands", even if it is the coolest game on the Blockchain haha.

I hope your stay is great and we are in the coolest guild which of course is "Shield of Glory".

@tipu curate 2

Hey Lenon! Yes, I'm quite amazed at how huge Hive actually is, and I'm sure I've only seen the tip of the iceberg. I count myself very lucky I found you all in our guild.

Great, I'm glad you're in the guild too, you're an awesome player, so, any questions you have about HIVE, don't hesitate to ask, I'm at your service.

Thank you so much! You've been so welcoming since Day 1. I'm sure I will have plenty of questions haha, there is a lot to learn.

Welcome to Hive! I'm glad you're part of Shield of Glory. The guild is really moving now. Someday, we'll have Land and then I think we will really takeoff.

Thank you! Me too, man, it's great being with you all. Hoo boy when land comes around things are going to be exciting!

Looking good Mister Rogers, thanks for sharing that backstory. Glad to have you as part of the Shield of Glory!

Awe, thank you! And you're welcome! It's so great being a part of the guild.

Whish you a great journey here!

Greddy! Hi! Oh man, so am I, so glad. This place is so cool, and for two months I had absolutely no idea. I'm like a kid in a candy store right now 🤣

Thanks so much for the welcome - see you around here and ofc as we crush our opponents 😎

I actually found Hive when it was Steem, before Splinterlands, when it was just a social media hub, and not a particularly impressive one at that.

It had a lot of potential, but if I hadn’t found Splinterlands I probably would’ve given up on this place. Thankfully, that isn’t the case, and now it’s proven to be one of the best things that’s ever happened to me.

Some of my favorite people are here and more on the way!

Man, it's so funny the things and places you accidentally stumble upon, and the people and connections you then make. Serendipity.

I obviously don't know the history of Hive, but it sounds like it has gone through a lot of growing pains and has come out of them all the stronger. That said, there are some hilarious and interesting communities as well. I really dig this place. It feels like there's a home for everything and anything.

And hell yeah - 99% of the people I've met here so far are just genuine and good - I'm really happy to have found Splinterlands, then Hive, and I'm excited to see where the journey's going to take me.

Considering the space we operate in, and how fast things move here, Hive has one of the riches histories in the crypto world.

This is a great post. One of the best intros I’ve read. It paints a pretty broad portrait of you. I’m glad you’ve discovered that aspect to this space. I believe you’ll find it very enriching.

Thank you so much. It's actually been a long time since I've written anything and it felt soooo good to be back in the saddle. The more I read others' intro posts, and posts in general, I found that it seems the best aspects of Hive come about when people are honest and vulnerable & try to bring out the best in others... so that's what I aimed for, and is what I'm aiming for.

The best part of it is you can take yourself as seriously, or not, as you want here and it all pays something. :D

Lol, when I try to write something serious it goes to hell, but if I rant about the Double stuff Oreo conspiracy I totally made up I do great'ish...

This place really is kind of magical.

Haaahaha - that is totally your mojo, double stuff oreo conspiracy

Hey!
Welcome to Hive!

Thank you so much! It's great being here - everyone's super friendly and there are so many awesome communities.

Welcome to Hive. Im Irish by being born. A few of us on here. There must be drink at the end of it.

Oh hell yeah! Where are you from? I lived in Kilkenny for three months in the fall of 2003, and worked in Billy Byrnes' Pub and in Tall Stories Bookshop.

One night while traveling, a group of taxi drivers from Limerick bought me and a friend so many Guinnesses that we thought we were dying the next morning when we woke up in the hostel lol

I worked in Mcdonagh Junction in Kilkenny myself up until last year. I was actually in Billy Byrnes last week. I love the little bus out the back. From Clonmel in Tipperary. Not too far from Kilkenny.

No shit. That's such a small world. I'm so glad Billy Byrnes is still there! I can't remember anyone's names, it's been too long - but is Mrs. Byrnes still here and with us? She was so damn great to work for. Her son, I barely knew him, but he was away working - I think abroad? - and that's how I landed the job, to fill in for him. But she was fantastic. She comped us a pint after every shift, and thought it was great fun that I asked to bank them all for special occasions.

There was also a gentlemen who came in for coffee every day, as he could no longer stomach alcohol, and he was a local artist of some renown. He drew a couple portraits of me, and I still have them - in fact, I'm looking at them rolled up right now!

I don't know Mrs Byrne personally but I have many friends in Kilkenny so I will ask them and get back to you. Kilkenny is a great spot for random nights like the one you mentioned. There is a pub called O Donnells beside Billy Brynes and I used to stay in a room there on the nights I would stay over and go out for drinks. It's a small world

Such a small world!! That's awesome, thank you man. Some day I'm going to get back over there. Lots of great memories. One of my last nights there we had a guy show up (we stayed open past hours that night) pretending to be an undercover policeman, and one of our regulars got so pissed at him he followed the man down the lane and across the bridge at 2 or 3 in the morning. I never knew what came of it. God those days were a blast.

There are alot of "undercover policemen" in pubs in Ireland that show up drunk and flash a badge of some description to get a free drink after hours. 😂. Chancers.

That's ... exactly how it went down 😂
I was shitting myself until everyone was like, no no no, yer man here is a FAKE!

😂😂. Ha. You should do a post about your time in Kilkenny.

hey mate! Check my last post i think you will enjoy it.

keep on whit good posts like this one!

Amazing how your first posting got all these attention. Congratulations on finding hive. I'm also new here too.

Thank you so much, and congratulations to you, too! How are you enjoying Hive so far?

It's great the community has helped me a lot with my first delegations. I was able to do postings. At first there was the CR error no one know about when they join hive then I joined a discord group. I think It was mr @flaxz from #aliveandthriving who helped me understand how the ecosystem works and delegated me.

That's fantastic! I didn't even know about the broader ecosystem for two months after I joined to play Splinterlands... my guildmates from the game started talking to us newcomers about all of the benefits Hive has to offer. I still feel I really have barely scratched the surface. There's so much to do, see, and so many great people to interact with. I'm really happy for you that you met some great folks willing to help you out. It makes all the difference.

U are welcome to hive world of human development, and self examining platform, where you grow and develope ur human ability of creativity.u too can! If God can, its ur right, the ability is in u. Hive can make it happened. Am still a learner, wait for my intro too.
