Introduction — an attempt to get into the fold

Since this is an introductory post, I should start with how did I come to know about hive. I was searching through online, looking for a platform that is similar to youtube, but for writers. Seen one too many videos, heard about hive.blog, racked my brain around it (whoa it's a lot to take in, seriously!) and finally here I am. I still can't believe I've managed to do all those steps, not adequately au fait with the blockchain technology I'm afraid. But I have to say, this is all quite eye opening for me.

I was looking for a writing platform, this is why—

I’ve been writing for about a decade now. Community blogs in the late 00’s early 10’s were quite popular in my part of the world. Soon the whole thing took off and went to facebook as the platform began to expand. However, the practice of bans on writers and activists on facebook that has been going on for quite some time now shook me and made me realize how vulnerable we all are on such platforms.

Even though my writings are not of political nature, I lost my account once—thanks to spammers. Finally I decided to find a better place. A place where I can safely write about the things I care about. And hey, looks like hive compliments the authors! I also heard there are live whales too. Whoa!

Kind of writings you can expect from me—

I’ve worked as a copywriter for a company that specializes as financial advisor. Translated a healthy portion of a GRE academic book. However, most of my daily writings are actually about films, books, music and social norms. Tech tips too. Ahem—not that techy to be honest, only about the obstacles an average joe (me in this case) has to go through everyday.

Anyway, I should elaborate on the things I like. They might portray a clearer picture of me.

Books I love

I read about 75-100 books a year now. This wasn’t always so. For a long time (2010-2017) I haven’t read anything. You can very well guess the culprit coughinternetcough that kept me away from it. Fortunately, I found my way through with a little bit of persistence.

I like different genres from non-fiction to high fantasy, the latter being my most favorite. I absolutely love classic literature. A fan of maximalism, you could say. Recently, I’ve grown some interest in behavioral economics.

Music I adore

Music has always been a means to escape from the world. In this case too, I listen to an array of genres—from classical to heavy metal. Mind you, I’m not an elitist either. Pop, rock and occasional folk find their ways into my playlist.

I believe the tune or the melody of a musical piece or a song is more important than words. Perhaps this is why I can enjoy songs in many different languages without never realizing their lyrical meaning. What's better than to be lost in musical ecstasy when the world tries to suffocate you?

Films I’m passionate about

Cinema is my ultimate passion. Something I can call my own. This is also not just a hobby. I’m somewhat in the industry and also studying the art-form for a while.

Even though I write mostly about avant-garde, surreal, classic art-films, I do watch almost all kinds there are. Some might be a bit quirky, some comedy or simply full of romance. Sci-fi and dark comedy are my favorite genres.

Some other things I do

I love languages. Trying to teach myself French and German. English is also not my native language.

I like cooking and trying different recipes.

When I read books, I also listen to audiobooks. You won’t believe how practical they are if you haven’t tried them yet! It’s also fun to be read to. Almost like going back to the bedside story days.

Not a heavy gamer but I do a bit of gaming every once in a while. Assassins Creed and Hitman franchise are my favorite.
In my current workplace, I mostly do Video editing and Motion Design.

My plans for Hive.blog

Haven’t really figured out all the things I need to know to have a sustainable hive presence. I don’t know much about hive power, HBD. How other sister platforms like d.tube works in relation to hive. I was going through FAQ and I can see myself spending a lot of time there in future too.

I also have to figure out how my content will suit the hive ecosystem and the changes I will have to implement.

As you probably noticed, I haven’t provided much personal information despite the fact that I babbled like a narcissist. I have seen other introductory posts and how beautifully many people articulated themselves with their photos and all. So I’m a bit hesitant and nervous in contemplating my first impression on the community.

I hope my thoughts and words will almost be enough to lift me up.

Sort:

Welcome. I came here because I had one post, one, on FB that was removed because I reminded people to vote. I didn't promote any candidate or cause, only that they should vote. That's all it took. I started looking for alternatives that would not censor me.

Hive, Leo Finance, STEMgeeks, PALnet, and many other sites are all Hive. Your account logs you in to all the sites. For video, you have the choice of Dtube or 3Speak.

If you want something like Twitter, there is now D.buzz, which is also the same login.

Podcasts? Dsound.audio

It is a very robust and diverse community.

Don't pay too much attention to the rewards. When you are starting, you don't get much. In time, rewards get larger and larger. If you get impatient, you can always buy and stake more Hive into Hive Power.

Most of my Hive Power was purchased. With more HP, you get more voting power and greater rewards.

I think that's all the important information.

I just want to remind you that some of us are here to write, create videos, or be social. The rewards often make people forget that the important thing is the freedom to create.

Facebook recently deleted a photo I posted of a photo I've taken of a page from a history book 'The rise and fall of the third reich'. I haven’t shared any personal remark with it whatsoever, still, they claimed it was a violation. How! Why!

I really appreciate the tips, @shainemata, if I'm prudent enough, I'll make use of that wisdom.
I'm thinking about trying to boost hivepower at first and finding my place among the community. I'm happy to tell you, I'm here for the sake of writing as well.
This reminds of a question I was sitting on, there is a game review community with many reviews, but I haven’t seen film or book reviews. Would you say it is because these writings are unwanted or the platform is still young?

Also, apart from d.tube, I didn't know of the other sister sites. The name 'hive' starts to make sense!
Thanks for taking the time to write the reply.

I have written a book review recently.

Once you have an audience, you start to get more votes. There are curation groups that will find and promote quality posts. This gets you a lot of notice.

It is difficult to find book reviews because we all try a little bit of everything to find “our voice”. Also, with all the niche condensers (Hive sites), you will often see a portion of the traffic or an unfiltered stream, depending on where you are seeing.

Last thing, most people prefer to use one account for all their posts. Others will have one account per niche. This is my personal blog account. @travelwritemoney is my account for travel posts (travelfeed.io), writing (palnet.io), and finance (Leofinance.io). I just started another account for my professional knowledge as a facility manager (stemgeeks.net).

I post at those other sites, but I use peakd.com to check on replies and manage my accounts. It’s all the same account, same posts. But those condenser sites make it easier to find your audiences, depending on you topic.

Hi and welcome to Hive 😉

Thanks @robmojo :D I'm liking it here so far!

Good to hear that and your wc 😉

Hello and welcome!!! 😊

... I have seen other introductory posts and how beautifully many people articulated themselves with their photos and all ...

I think you articulated yourself rather well. I hope you like it here! It can be a little overwhelming at first, especially with the lack of interaction during these first days, but it gets better.

I'm glad you mustered the courage to write your introduction! 🙂

Thank you for welcoming me and for the encouragement, @kaelci! Yeah, it is a bit overwhelming and will take me a while to get a grip on this. But I assure you, I can be persistent! 😁 Looking forward to spending more and more time here.

Welcome to Hivelandia!

Other folks have already mentioned several good dApps and Communities. What you post on hive.blog also shows up on peakd.com and vice versa. Your keys work on both sites. I use both but prefer the peakd.com interface, but it’s very much a personal choice.

Thanks a lot! The community feels warm and welcoming, I'm grateful.
Yes, I'm using peakd as well. This interface seems more suitable for my taste, looks pretty, convenient too.

Thanks brittandjosie! I appreciate the tips. 😇 Tell you what, I've been fumbling around in the posts and faqs and indeed found my way to peakd. Using that right now. Looks pretty and often more appropriate for a blogging experience.

Welcome to the Hive community @notacinephile!
We sincerely hope you find everything you are looking for and have found a new home here.

Seven suggestions to consider:

  1. Guard your passwords carefully, and only publish with the posting key,
  2. Use your active key only for wallet transactions, keychain and Peaklock,
  3. The owner password is only used to reset compromised passwords,
  4. DO NOT lose your passwords; copy and store offline,
  5. Do not publish other people's work, be it photos or written, without credit, and
be sure to source all of your work, even if it is your own
    .
  6. An introduceyourself tag is used only once , and
  7. Do Not open any links in memos or comments that you do not know who they belong to. If it sounds too good to be true it probably is, so the old saying goes. There is nothing free here.

I found you because @brittandjosie and @jamerussell from @heyhaveyamet presented and promoted your publication to get more exposure and help you grow faster.

If you find yourself overwhelmed and need some guidance, or if you have any questions, there are informed Hivians available who can help you; you can click to go to The Terminal in Discord here:

Have fun and happy Hiving!

Cannot thank you enough, @jamerussell and also @brittandjosie.
I know things (on hive) might not go the way I want them to be but I will be here, in and out. There are many talented people here and some of them seemed really interesting. I guess you can find like minded folks wherever you go.

Glad that such a platform The Terminal exists, a new user might just breathe in a bit and shake off the initial rigidity of a blockchain community. Can I suggest other new users to join? I mean, conversationally, nonchalantly. In a line or two! 😀

Hi @notacinephile Welcome to Hive. Awesome collection of books you've read and movies you've seen. I noticed that you only use 6 tags in your post. If you post on hive.blog, you are allowed 8 tags; if you post on Peakd, you are allowed 10 tags. Whenever you write about yourself, try using the tag #innerblocks #lifestyle #ocd and #gems

Your posts will gain more exposure. Also, check out the various Communities that are a fit for your writing. There are poetry, fiction, music, movies, arts and a host of Communities. Just browse the list of COMMUNITIES above in the Communities Tab.

Hope to engage with you again. Take care, stay safe, and have a great weekend.

Hey @justclickindiva, thank you! I'm using a lot of tags now but after creating the account I was a bit confused about them. It took me while to get it that even if I become generous with tags, people won't come after me! 😄

I appreciate the encouragement. I've seen some of the communities. Hope to see more of them. :)

Glad that you stopped by.
Good day to you too. Stay safe.

Nothing is going to come after you, run you down, and just hand it to you. It's a two way communication effort. Go inside each Community and see what type of content is there and who the authors are. ENGAGE with them, and they in turn, sometimes, will engage with you. Branch out and speak with other authors that is not in your writing genre. But the key is to engage with others. Not only with it broaden your base of people who will eventually come to know, but commenting on others' content will help to grow your account in terms of Hive Power.

Dude! That is an excellent intro post! We should pin it somewhere as an example.

Thanks! But you don't think it was a bit self-obsessed? 😌

Not at all. If I want to know about you as an intellectual entity I rather know that upfront.

It is so heartwarming to read your intro, Amor. This post should be bookmarked and shown to new members to learn from it and how one should go about it.

Thank you! I'm glad you've liked it!
But Sakib claims he has already managed to drive a few people away with this post! I wonder if it has the right balance to be a model post.

This is a great intro and as I can see it's already pinned... it already contains enough guidelines for other about how to do an intro... very detailed... welcome to hive 😛

Thank you, ma'am. I'll behave myself!

And, Amor I read this yet again, for posterity. I may not be able to reward it, but can at least appreciate it again.

Thank you dada, and I'm fortunate to have a patron like you. However, you and I both know that you're quite an exception on the platform. 😀
