Starting Over in Times of Change

A year ago I was a wife and mom that had recently quit my job working as a producer in a Creative Department. We, my husband and I, thought that we were immigrating to New Zealand from South Africa.

Plans were coming together, we had our house up for sale, slimming down our possessions and both our teens changed to a homeschool system so that we could cope with change at any moment. Paper-ready to go as soon as we got a job offer.

During this period of transition I threw myself into home projects to keep busy and figure out what my new purpose was. As an innately creative person I knew there was a lot I could lean into, but the season of change meant it needed to be something that was in-hand, cost effective and served my family.

I’ve always loved baking and DIY this became my focus (outside of homeschool). Baking has some side effects though (hello - you tend to eat what you bake) so now I had even more time to hike and walk on the beach near our home.

Then came the biggest spanner in the works that we could ever have imagined, COVID-19. The world shut down as boarders closed and our hopes of moving in just a couple months crumbled. It was like suffering a loss of a dream.

On the day before lockdown in South Africa signed and offer on our house. Three weeks later we got an offer on our second property which we turned down as we now needed somewhere to live. This would become the life change that we had been craving. A smaller house in a little village that feels like a holiday.

We moved during lockdown which meant the streets were deadly quiet and winter kept our new neighbours bundled in their homes. It was a strange quiet, lonely change from a community we knew to a community we didn’t know. But as winter turned to Spring and the lockdown slowly lifted we found a relaxed, laid back, friendly group of folk that are passionate about the outdoors, the environment and our local village.

The reno of our home (an old cottage) became my project and focus and kept me busy. Over the next while I’ll post some of what we have done and some of the baking along the way. But in the meantime know that we have found a place of peace to be a family and make fresh plans for the future.

I’ll continue to do what my hand finds to do whether it be baking or renovating, but I know that there is just so much more to come.

Interesting story, I look forward to reading about the rest of your move.

There is more to come for sure!

Welcome to hive!!!!
here a nice @tipu curate

Thank you! Sorry for the delay in replying. I’m catching up and learning how this all works at the same time. What is @tipu????

I am affiliated to Tipu in order to "tip' good content on Hive

Oh thank you! Glad I can produce some good content then! I posted a kickass chocolate cake recipe and a lifestyle post about walking sights in the Cape Peninslua as well. I’m trying out a few communities and then hopefully will find my niche somewhere.

Welcome to Hive. I hope you can find lots of cool people to engage with. We have something for all interests.

Thanks got it. But it doesn’t seem to update a fast as if I am on hive.blog online.

Could you please elaborate? Ecency.com is faster than Hive.blog in most cases, perhaps we can improve some pages, if you find it slower. Your feedback helps us to learn and improve.

Well welcome to Hive—bout time! DIY and food, there's plenty of that here for you. Congrats releasing your first post. You're a natural.

Thanks so much! I’m very new to all of this, but also very excited to share.

Welcome to hive. It seems like you'll have plenty to share with the blockchain and all I suggest is to add passion and personality plus a little effort to what you do here; The rest will take care of itself. Enjoy.

Thanks again and sorry for the delay. I’m catching up at the moment. My husband tore a ligament on the weekend, so it’s been a bit crazy 😳

No worries, we all get busy in the real world sometimes.

Welcome to Hive! If you like food, @plantstoplanks @fionasfavourites @traciyork and @riverflows are your chefs!

I would love to move to New Zealand too, did some travelling there in 2019 and have been meaning to continue my travel blogs on my adventures, might have to pick it up again!

If you need any help, give me a shout!

Gosh sorry for the delay!!! I’m learning and figuring this all out. I’ve followed a couple other South Africans and @giantbear has been helping me. Alway love connecting though. PS I just posted a chocolate cake recipe that is to die for!!!

Yeah! COVID, I get it... totally threw me for a loop, too. My industry, Special Events and AV? Shut down March 13th, and still not working.

So, I have always had a garden, but never started from seed. last year, that was my task, to start from Seed. If you read my last post, you'd see, I think the seeds worked out.

I lvoe that image of the bay, ocean and mountains. Truly amazing.

I’ll have to do a post about my garden at some point too! The garden at cottage that we moved to had to be completed stripped and given a makeover. So maybe a before and after blog of how we rescued it.

In time you will also see loads of beach photos. Our house is 600m from the beach, a quick walk along a small river so I’m looking forward to sharing. Chat again soon.

Welcome to HIVE blockchain, @zo3d !

Living in a small city/village is a perfect solution!

I lived all my life in big cities and 1,5 years ago I returned to my home city. A very small but peaceful place. That was a perfect decision!

It feels like we’ve moved from a small town to an even tinier village. Sorry for the delay, I’m catching up and learning all at the same time. 😜

Well hello there @zo3d, welcome to hive.
Best of luck with your new home.
Enjoy!!

Thank you! Sorry for the delay. I’m catching up and learning all at the same time. 😜

Oh no worries here, life is busy. You will find a lot of people responding days after a comment. It's never a problem. You will see this is a very supportive and friendly platform .
Have a wonderful day.

Welcome !

I look forward to seeing the creative ways you change your newest space.

Welcome to Hive @zo3d from a fellow South African!
Covid has certainly turned all our lives upside down, some unexpectedly good changes, but what a shock that must have been for you!
If you enjoy cooking and baking, look out for the various communities like FoodiesBeeHive, @qurator's weekly Hive Top Chef!, @naturalmedicine currently run Veganuary and there's a little monthly sandwich contest being run by @mondoshawan.
The challenges are a nice way to grow and meet fellow Hivers;)
Looking forward to seeing your diy project, there's even a community for that here!
We run a bnb post retirement and Hive came to my rescue in more ways than one during that hard lockdown last year, so enjoy the journey!

Oh thank you!!!

Hello and welcome fellow South African, yes covid has thrown a spanner in the works, glad you kept your second home, a smaller cottage more homely and a place to settle down.

Look forward to seeing your DIY to the cottage and building online with friends, be happy your family are all together no matter where in the world we live, a home is what we make!

Welcome to the Hive community @zo3d!
We sincerely hope you find everything you are looking for and have found a new home here.

Seven suggestions to consider:

  1. Guard your passwords carefully, and only publish with the posting key,
  2. Use your active key only for wallet transactions, keychain and Peaklock,
  3. The owner password is only used to reset compromised passwords,
  4. DO NOT lose your passwords; copy and store offline,
  5. Do not publish other people's work, be it photos or written, without credit, and
be sure to source all of your work, even if it is your own
    .
  6. An introduceyourself tag is used only once , and
  7. Do Not open any links in memos or comments that you do not know who they belong to. If it sounds too good to be true it probably is, so the old saying goes. There is nothing free here.

I found you because @brittandjosie and @jamerussell from @heyhaveyamet presented and promoted your publication to get more exposure and help you grow faster.

If you find yourself overwhelmed and need some guidance, or if you have any questions, there are informed Hivians available who can help you; you can click to go to The Terminal in Discord here:

Have fun and happy Hiving!

Thanks so much for for the help. So far I am enjoying the experience of being a part of the hive community.

I have no idea why I missed @nickyhavey's call to stop by, but here I am with a belated, but nevertheless warm welcome to Hive.

I hope you're beginning to find your way around: it can be a bit of a quagmire. I see that some of the friendliest peeps on the blockchain stopped by to welcome you, too. They and I are never far if you need to shout: here or on Discord.

Do join us for @traciyork's monthly #HivePUD. I will be doing a reminder (and explanation) about it a little later.

In the meantime, !Wine because it the only way we can get it in South Africa at the moment!
