More crazy apartment setups in my search for a new home

in #life4 years ago

Searching for a new house sucks. It gets made even worse when the agents or owners use trick photography in order to try to make their place look bigger than it is or even worse, when they will take photos of some sort of "flagship" unit and then when you go to look at it, it doesn't look anything like what was advertised and now they are just wasting their time and my own.

I wish I could say the apartment search was going well, but it definitely isnt!

I've gotten to the point now what when I see a place that is just "decent" I'm thinking I will take it. The search carries me all over town in the heat only to have very few of the units that I look at be anything like what is advertised and I used to pretend that I was interested when i tried all the appliances and what not but these days I am normally pretty honest right when they open the door when I say something like "ok, seen enough, nope!" Then I have a conversation with the real estate agent to stop jerking me around and just show me places that don't suck because I am not going to rent crappy ones especially if they use deceptive advertising.

Sometimes though, the design is just crazy and / or terrible and I've been finding a lot of that lately.

I understand that space is limited in these units but can you think of a more inconvenient place to put your clothes closet? You would have to stand on the bed in order to pick out a shirt. Certainly they could have done better than this.

This is actually extremely common and one that defies all logic in my mind. I have no idea what would compel a person to think that putting the fridge on the opposite side of the room from the food prep area would be a good idea. Why not just put in on the balcony? Or better yet, in the garage 4 floors down. It's far too convenient being in the kitchen at all if you ask me.

She asked me if I wanted to see a "smart condo" and since I don't really even know what that means, I agreed. Apparently it means a unit that is slightly bigger than a prison cell and is as depressing as humanly possible. That isn't just a photo of one of the rooms, that is the entire condo. The bed is in the foreground.

The second "smart condo" that I looked at would end up being the last one I would ever look at.

It was at that point that we had to go back to square one about what it is exactly that I am in the market for and what my budget was because there is no chance that I would live in that. I'm not trying to sound all posh because I certainly am not that, but I have slightly higher living standards than this.

I didn't take this photo, it is from her website, as the watermark would indicate.

I don't think that my words really resonated with her because this was the next unit she showed me and I just kind of chuckled when she opened the door. I don't even know where to begin with what is wrong here but for starters there isn't near enough crap in this room. I need at least three times as many useless knick knacks around my apartment. The broken decorative scooter on the far right is a wonderful touch to any living room ensemble. Also, I should have clarified that I need at least 50 light bulbs to be on in every room I occupy. They came close with their overuse of lighting here complete with completely unnecessary chandelier.

This was actually at the high end of my budget and I didn't even bother looking at the bedroom, we left as soon as we arrived. There is no way I would feel comfortable living in a place that basically looks like one of the rooms in an antique store. I expected price tags to be hanging from everything in the place.

So the search continues. I have another 3 weeks at my current place so it isn't terribly urgent just yet and at the moment I am actually attempting to renegotiate with my current landlord instead of moving out.

Have you ever seen some crazy apartment designs like this? I have lived in a lot of different places in the world but I have never been somewhere that has such an overall strange setup in a lot of the living spaces.

Sort:

What is that? A fridge for ants?

nice zoolander reference :)

Had to.

But dang, those are tiny fridges.

Apparently it means a unit that is slightly bigger than a prison cell and is as depressing as humanly possible

Hehe, stop making me laugh, I had an apartment for my stay in the US, one bedroom, one living room, bathroom and kitchen built-in. I know what you mean, but mine was not unduly small.

Oh i bet it is even more difficult in USA. A family member of mine really wanted to live in an expensive part of Manhattan. her 1 bedroom condo was extremely small and was also $3000 a month. It't crazy what people pay to live in that city.

At least with this prison condos the rent is something absurdly low like $200 a month.

It depends on what you want, is there a communal swimming pool with these?

My first apartment in Phoenix was a little roach-infested. I ditched it for a better one but Roachland followed me and insisted I had not paid some extra cash for ending the lease.

Watch out for this kind of shit. I then left the US and the trail went cold for Roachland :)

Thankfully in these high rise condos that cocaroaches don't really make it up to the higher levels. on the street level though... yikes. They are everywhere

lmao. I can feel your misery from way out here. Is it so hard to find an apartment with decent legroom and less pointless shit? The one where the fridge was kept 50Km away seemed relatively nicer than the rest. My luxury apartment is basically the same size with the "prison cell" and I also get to do some exercise whenever I want food because my kitchen happens to be outside. In this area, getting a decent house is tedious. Do you necessarily have to stay in that part of town?

I don't think I've ever seen you this cranky before. Maybe you need to relax and Play GTA V in your spare time, if you haven't already gotten to it.

haha, yeah i suppose i am cranky, but having to move is one of my least favorite things to do. I'm hoping that my current landlord reconsiders

That is really crazy, indeed. The third apartment has the TV in a weird place. But I guess it's the only way possible, if that's the whole apartment. In the 4rd apartment the TV looks like it's about to fall off at any moment... and in the last one, finding the TV is like playing a game of "Where's Wally?" 😁

Good luck in your quest... maybe you should simply buy an auto-caravan.

i would love to live in an RV. I am yet to see one here at all though, and in over a decade of living in Thailand I only ever saw 2 or 3

Oh! Why's that? Don't people like them... or they just can't afford one?

i don't know exactly. I would imagine it has a lot to do with the fact that as far as i know, no one actually manufactures them down here and importing one would cost a fortune. Then you would also be faced with the fact that there are likely no replacement parts available too.

That makes sense...

Falling out of love with Danang so soon? Why don't you just show the agent a picture of what you want exactly and to contact you only when they already located several? Or terminate the contract with your current landlady then ask a friend to get back the apartment on your behalf at the price you deem appropriate.

oh no, i still really like it here. I just find it humorous some of these places for rent and how poorly designed they are. I will get it taken care of but like i mentioned somewhere else, i think the only way to get a truly wonderful place is to rent two places at the same time. The chance of your lease expiring on the same day a new one starts is pretty slim.

Oh the thought of standing on the bed every time I need something out of my almirah is hilarious. I understand an Architect would have not designed it but have they lost complete common sense while designing.
Please compensate and live where you are right now else the condos out there are crazy!
Keep flourishing.

Good luck on finding a place, man. Worst case you can always just live in a glass box full of your own pure testosterone, redbull with vodka and gamer energy, babyboi.

those sorts of places should be easy to find. Karaoke booths can be retrofitted to exactly what you are describing i think.

Yeah, that last photo really goes against everything they tell you when you are supposed to be staging a house. Less is definitely more to make the space appear as big as possible. I hear you about camera angles. When my wife and I were looking at houses I can't tell you the number of places where they obviously stood in the corner and used a wide angle lens to make the postage stamp of a room look as huge as possible!

When i was working at some villas as a manager in Thailand they hired a photographer who used wide angle lenses to make the pools look larger than they are. I rejected all the photos where it was deceptive because I knew that it was me that was going to have to answer for them, even though I had nothing to do with it. I hate that crap.... just show me what you got!
