Red Sky Monday Mixtape Vol8 - Pre Millenial Tensions

Some of a certain age will remember very well that the whole world as we knew it was supposed to fall apart at the stroke of midnight as 1999 became 2000. Hysteria and Hysterical speculations had people believing ...just maybe ...Computers and antiquated electronic systems propping up the Western Industrial Complex would all come crashing down leaving us without power, water and banking. As we all know nothing of consequence occurred and 00 arrived without event.
Today's #mondaymixtape is a varied bag from the decade on the cusp.....the 1990's.

PORTISHEAD - Mysterons (1994)

Mysterons was the opening track from Portishead's Debut album Dummy. Beth Gibbons' tortured but beautiful vocals drenched over the scratchy noir samples, beats, guitar and turntablism from her bandmates have been much imitated since but this was a ground breaking sound when it dropped in '94. This is one of the few albums in my life I have worn out through use and had to buy it again.

BLUR - Coffee and TV (1999)

"Do you feel like a chain store? Practically floored" ....They don't write lyrics like that no more. Not sung by Damon Albarn the usual main vocalist who went on to form The Gorillaz. This was written by Graham Coxon and had a surprisingly perky sounding pop sensibility for a song that dealt with Coxon's struggle with Alcoholism

MASSIVE ATTACK - Teardrop (1998)

This song has become a classic and some will recognize the underlying instrumental as the theme tune from the TV show House. The song was very nearly sung by Madonna. It may have still been a good tune but I think on reflection I am heartily glad that the 3 band members were finally 2 against 1 and Elizabeth Frazer of the Cocteau Twins got the vocal gig for this one.

CHEMICAL BROTHERS - Let Forever Be (1999)

This track paid homage to the Beatles Track Tomorrow Never Knows both in the wholesale borrowing of the rhythm and the overall psychedelic vibe of the song. Noel Gallagher of Oasis fame provided the vocals and the video by Michel Gondry was a perfect visual mirror of the track.

BECK - Deadweight (1997)

This was one of Beck's less known tracks but the laid back vibes and sixties influences on this one always appealed. Glad that most of the artists in this mixtape have managed to stand the test of time and continue churning out quality in the post Millennium decades.

Gotta love the 90s. Here in India during the 90s we had the 'Indie Pop' era. Some great songs and musicians came from there. Unfortunately, that entire industry was eaten up by Bollywood!

Talking of being eaten by Bollywood I nearly posted this one but it was 2001 so did not quite meet my theme

Hahahahahha... That made my day! Never seen this one before.

Grunge colored my 90's days . Loved it
