In the year 2000, in Johvi, Estonia, a young boy was walking along a path near Lake Kurtna Matasjarv. He came across tank tracks that led into the lake but never out of it. Curious, he observed the lake and noticed something even more peculiar – air bubbles periodically popped out of the lake.

He narrated his discovery to Igor Shedunov, the leader of a local historical society called “Otsing.” Shedunov led the investigation that discovered something truly magnificent to behold.

Shedunov and his men detected something large and heavy trapped beneath the lake. At about 7 meters deep they finally got a hold of a heavy object buried beneath 3 meters of peat.

Otsing club members led by Shedunov then decided to pull it out.

In September of 2000, the Otsing club sought the help of Aleksander Borovkov, who manages the Narva open pit for AS Eesti Polevkivi. They asked to rent the company’s Komatsu D375A-2 bulldozer.

The Otsing club members used the Komatsu to pull the object trapped beneath the lake. It turns out it was a Soviet-built T34/76A tank!

The massive tank was trapped under the lake since World War II. It was a historical relic that was almost lost to the ravages of time. The tank weighs 27 tons and has a top speed of 53 km per hour.

Historical records state that Estonia experienced vicious fighting during February to September in 1944, particularly in the narrow Narva front. Historical experts believe this tank was a “trophy tank” captured by the Axis Powers from the Soviets and used it against its makers. The tank was found to have German markings which strongly support this theory.

Surprisingly, the tank was in good working condition. Everything within it, aside from the engine, was working fine. After undergoing restoration, it was tested and now runs properly. Plans to exhibit it at the museum near the Narv River are underway, as per the source.
