Russia’s Gas Squeeze Exposes Europe’s Low Reserves

Russia’s Vladimir Putin is orchestrating a deliberate energy supply crisis in Europe by restricting the seasonal flows of pipeline gas, preventing the region rebuilding its severely depleted inventories fast enough before the onset of winter.

Democrats Move to Expand Social Safety Net

Passage of the bill, which could spend as much as $3.5 trillion over the next decade, is anything but certain. President Biden, who has staked much of his domestic legacy on the measure’s enactment, will need the vote of every single Democrat in the Senate, and virtually every one in the House, to secure it. And with two Democratic senators, Joe Manchin III of West Virginia and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona, saying they would not accept such a costly plan, it will challenge Democratic unity like nothing has since the Affordable Care Act.

Jim Jordan Says Vaccine Mandates Are ‘Un-American’

But critics panned Jordan’s Labor Day message as being off — way off — by nearly 2½ centuries. George Washington, the commander in chief of the Continental Army in the Revolutionary War, made the bold decision in 1777 to require that his troops be immunized after a smallpox outbreak devastated the nation.

Trump Adviser Detained In Brazil

Following reports of his detention by Brazilian police, former Trump spokesman Jason Miller issued a statement saying that he had been questioned by law enforcement for three hours at the airport in the capital of Brasilia.
Said Miller: “This afternoon my traveling party was questioned for three hours at the airport in Brasilia, after having attended this weekend’s CPAC Brasil Conference. We were not accused of any wrongdoing, and told only that they ‘wanted to talk’. We informed them that we had nothing to say and were eventually released to fly back to the United States. Our goal of sharing free speech around the world continues!”

The combination would present a triple threat, daring GOP lawmakers to go on record in opposition to aid for disaster-hit communities, staving off a debt default that could throw financial markets into chaos and preventing a government shutdown.

Abbott's statement isn't bizarre. It might have been odd if offered as a stand alone answer to the question, but as the video shows that's not what's happened.

The Governor asserts that the law does not require sexual assault victims to carry pregnancies to term because reasons. That makes a complete answer to the question as posed.

He then moves on to a tangential "tough on crime" statement because the succinctness of the previous answer affords him the time to do so and because that sentiment plays well, especially in Texas.

It's disingenuous to take the second statement as a direct response to the question because that question's premise had, at least in the speaker's view, been refuted.

Oh, Abbott was quite disingenuous. Women who are raped often don’t even report the crime. And someone who’s been that traumatized might not deal well with a 6-week time crunch. His “tough on crime” statement was magical thinking. Oh sure, Texas will punish all rapists. Count on it.

Fine. The second statement wasn't a defense of the abortion restriction. It was a condemnation of the crime of rape. I don't support that restriction, but I'm also not a Texan.

His “tough on crime” statement was magical thinking. Oh sure, Texas will punish all rapists. Count on it.

He said Texas will "work tirelessly" to see to it that rapists are punished. Not magical, appropriately aspirational for a chief executive and politician.

The computer chip shortage is really worrisome. I would not mind to pay an extra premium for a computer if I need it or a car if I need it.
