Building My 1st PC- Step 4 The Set Up, Usage And Future

in #pc3 years ago

This is one part I wish went by a lot easier but it didn't. Partially my fault, partially not.

I should have included this picture in the last one but I just realized I have it so I'm putting it here

First thing that I did was try and activate Windows during the initial setup. I had forgotten to even think about connecting to the internet for this and so it wasn't working. Thankfully @foxon told me I didn't have internet and I realized I was just an idiot, not that something had gone wrong.

After that came the updates and such. That would have been fine if not for the stupid WiFi card that I initially had. That thing needed me to download drivers on my laptop and move them over(unlike the new one which just worked without any drivers needed). Then it couldn't find my 5 GHZ WiFi which was a pain because my 2.4 one was only about a tenth of the speed. Luckily after some restarts it started working and I was able to use 5 GHZ with it as well.

Then came the XMP profile for the RAM. Now I paid for 3600 MHZ RAM and I wanted all of that. This step wasn't too bad but I thought that the number on the easy mode would change right away and I was wondering what I was doing wrong. @deathwing saved the day by telling me to go to advanced mode and check the speed there and it was correct. After a restart it was at the right speed.

Soon after I had realized that I was only running 8 gigs of RAM! WHAT, I paid for 16 was my thought. Both sticks were lighting up and I assumed that they were working. After talking with the guys some more, I realized that one of the sticks might not have been plugged in all the way and so after pushing the right one down some more, I heard a click and knew that was the problem. Achievement unlocked, have 16 gigs of DDR4 RAM(beat you to it @cadawg).

Soon after I had installed GTA V and Batman Arkham Knight and was on my way to have fun with the games. Using Corsair's iCUE software, I was able to setup the ram to show me the temperature of my CPU and GPU and I find that quite useful. A quick glance and I can tell what has the potential of melting(spoiler: nothing yet).

I got to gaming and I was able to get 60 FPS on both GTA V(on the default settings which IDK what they are but it does look nice) and Batman Arkham Origins(maxed out settings). I've played Origins a lot more because I love the Batman games and while it does occasionally lose some FPS(down to 30 has been the worse I've seen), I'm content with it as it seems to happen for at most 2-3 seconds during intense fight scenes which happens at max once every 2-3 hours. For what I paid for everything, thats very livable with. If I wanted it to not drop, I could probably use the Radeon Software to auto overclock it to get a bit more power out of it(I use it for monitoring now) and turn the fan's max RPM up.

I expect this to be good for me for quite some time. I plan on eventually upgrading the GPU(maybe next summer if I get a job), and power supply getting a few more fans. I'm loving the more RAM as it allows me to have more than 3 chrome tabs open before it dies.

Long term, I would love it if I could get my PC looking something like this:

The white looks amazing(I prepped for it with the white RAM) and I love how the internal components are highlighted by everything around them. So beautiful.

Thank you to everyone who has helped me on this first build. It was quite an adventure and one that I'll love to do again in the near future. The building part was very fun and I did enjoy it a lot. But now's the time to enjoy the fruit of my labor. Opens fourth chrome tab

Nice! I remember doing my first build... I dropped the CPU accidentally on the pins! I was so scared that I had bent some of them. There is nothing better than hearing that BIOS beep!

That was where I was most scared. Breaking it could mean either the MB or the CPU were broken both of which are some of the most expensive parts(especially the CPU).

Why are you hiding your windows key? Huh? Huuuuuuuuuuuuh?! You think we're gonna steal it and use it?! hahaha

Yup, I expect you to steal it :)

I like how you left your D showing ;)

The white clean look is really nice, I might do that with my case every now and then, the joy of RGB if I don't like it strobing I can change it later to solid blue or whatever colour I like.

Of course, gotta give people a little tease :)

My favourite part of the white is that it shows off every component inside the machine and after spending a bit more on nice looking parts, I'd want them to be shown off.

Now the fun part starts, getting all your development tools installed...😀

I've installed Node.JS and python so far. Getting used to the windows CLI is weird and I'm thinking of just setting up the WSL2 soon. But I'll just install tools as I need them rather than installing them all at once.
