Hunting with Orcas!

in #pimplast year

Humans have used and still use all kinds of animals to chase down prey. Dogs are probably the best known example, while other creatures include cats and falcons.

But this post is about something on a whole different level.

Don't get me wrong. Hunting with a pet falcon is bad ass.

But do you know what is even more bad ass?

Hunting with a fucking ORCA 😂

This is the story of the killers of Eden or the Twofold Bay killers.

The killers of Eden was a group of killer whales from Southeastern Australia that cooperated with humans to hunt down other whales, between 1840 and 1930.

The whalers had even given names to most members of the pack, with the most popular one being "Old Tom".

But how did the two species interact?

When the orcas would spot potential victims, they would shepherd them into Twofold Bay (hence their name) or some other place close by and then one of them would swim away to notify the whalers.

This role was usually given to Old Tom, and this is why the whalers used to think he was the leader of the pack. Probably though he was just the messenger.

After the harpooning, the whalers would reward the orcas by leaving the carcasses anchored for a day or so and the orcas would procced to feast on the tongue and lips of the whale victims along with other smaller prey like fish and birds that would show up to pick on the scraps left by the fight!

Eventually the pack died out, either due to natural causes or human activity, possibly both. And the rest was history.

A really fascinating story imo that I first heard about today. If it caught your interest feel free to visit wikipedia, there's plenty more to read. There is even a book

Killers in Eden: The true story of killer whales and their remarkable partnership with the whalers of Twofold Bay

Ok that's it for today's weirdness 🤪

Oh my, @trumpman, hunting with Orcas is a whole new level of epic! Your post had me cracking up at the thought of it 😂 I mean, who wouldn't want to add "hunting with a freaking ORCA" to their resume?

It's fascinating to learn about the killers of Eden and their cooperation with humans. Old Tom must have been one whale of a character, pun intended! 🐋 I can only imagine the jaw-dropping scene of Orcas working together with humans back in the day.

Your post has certainly piqued my curiosity. I'm off to check out that Wikipedia page and maybe even dive into that book you mentioned. But before I go, do you know any other lesser-known tales of humans and animals working together? I'd love to hear more about these wild collaborations!

Thanks for the laughs and the intriguing read! Keep up the weirdness – it's delightful! 🤪

I have a feeling this was written by ai.

What can I say, this message is too fly for a robot to write!

What can I say you have a negative reputation now for obviously lying.

That's racist! 😂

I read a related story once about dolphins. In that case the fishermen were using nets and the dolphins were pushing the fish towards the nets. Whatever got it belonged to the fishermen and the rest that turned 180 degrees got in the mouths of the dolphins.

Orcas are dolphins too 🤫

So amazing to read this! We have a pair of orcas named Port and Starboard, that visit here in Cape Town, South Africa every year, and now in February they have killed 17 sharks. Funny thing is that they only eat the livers of the sharks. They have also killed a few great white sharks along the coast.

The guys are going to get all kinds of ideas about how to train Port and Starboard when I tell them the story that you have in here.

Good orcas!

Hahaha!

Amazing story. But human animal collaboration is not as unusual as one might think. The Dingo, the Australian wild dog, often collaborated with the Aborigines, who never domesticated them.

Thats a really great story. Orcas are intelligent and smart !

That is really interesting, I’m gonna have to look up more about that. Thanks

Lol what

cute

Haha, that's an interesting story... You see when you mention to someone at first that people can command orcas it sounds impossible, but it's just communicating, and that's not necessarily talking. ;) !PIZZA

They are smart beasts 😍

Yes they are but not sure I want a swimming with the Orcas event offered to me. I'll stick with the dolphins!
