Buckle up as we begin to unravel the mysteries around an age old question, “Where did we come from?” this will be the first of many articles discussing many little known discoveries that have some crazy implications. Before we begin let’s consider this, throughout history, pioneers in science and philosophy have often been harshly criticized and punished for publishing their findings for a variety of reasons. One notable example of this is Galileo, who was viciously ridiculed and punished and sentenced to house arrest for the remainder of his life for stating that the earth revolved around the sun and was not the center of the universe, which we now know to be true. This is merely one example of that I would hope anyone reading this article would know about, but if you research this for yourself you’ll find many more examples for a variety of reasons.

What’s so crazy about this particular site? Well when excavations began in 1995 by Prof. Klaus Schmidt and the German Archaeological Institute what they stumbled upon was the worlds largest megalithic site of its kind. Göbekli tepe is a group of large circular and oval-shaped structures set atop a hill. But whats crazy is that the entire hill is man-made, the entire site, of which only 5% has been excavated was intentionally buried twelve thousand years ago, about 10,000 BC but possibly even older. How do we know this, and why is it so important? The earliest evidence of human writing dates to Sumer around 3,300 BC. When Göbekli tepe was built agriculture didn't even exist, people were basically cavemen with the most primitive of stone tools. They weren't running around building megalithic sites. Archaeologists agree the site was not used for domestic use, as the found no of the signs of human habitation. They must have been some sort of temple or religious site, but we're talking about 7,000 years before writing so its pretty mindblowing.

Between whats been excavated, and geo-magnetic survey results, we now know that the site contains 20 of these temples the majority of which are still completely buried and haven't seen light in over 11,000 years. The general pattern or lay out appears to be two massive T shaped pillars surrounded by circular walls which featured a ring of slightly smaller pillars.

The pillars are 3 to 6 meters tall and weigh 40 to 60 tons and feature a variety of carvings ranging from animals, to symbols and abstract humans. There are a wide variety of scenes depicted, and some think the pillars themselves may be representative of human beings as some have been found with arms and legs carved onto them.

The only reason the site is so well preserved today is because 1500 years after its construction began, it was intentionally buried and abandoned. Whoever did this used an incredible amount of material, the entire hill that covers it is made of of a mix of rubble and dirt that was deliberately poured in to fill in and preserve the site. We have no idea why they did this, though there are some interesting theories.

In a time when technology's cutting edge was the most primitive of stone tools, how and why did these hunter-gatherers carve and move 40 ton stones and build such a complex? With no settlements or civilization to speak of, and the invention of farming still in the distant future how could these roaming primitive people have come up with this idea let alone carry it out. Perhaps this is the first find of a completely new relatively advanced civilization that we are just now discovering. Do we need to rethink our entire timeline of when human civilization began? I encourage you to decide for yourself.
