"As far as TikTok is concerned we’re banning them from the United States"
- Donald Trump

Yesterday onboard Air Force One Trump expressed concerns with Chinese viral app TikTok and said he could ban it from the US as soon as Saturday (today).

TikTok is an app that allows users to share short videos with other users. It was recently found out TikTok collects data and potentially sends it to a Chinese corporation. Many US organizations like Amazon, Wells Fargo, and the United States Miltary have banned TikTok. TikTok has been known to release updates that have security vulnerabilities that later have to be patched.

TikTok was also capturing users' clipboard contents. The company claims this was done by their anti-spam filter to prevent duplicate content.

The Government of India has already banned TikTok as well as 58 other mobile apps from their country. TikTok spent over 1 Billion dollars to acquire users in India and stands to lose over 6 Billion in revenue. Australia has expressed concerns and has been considering a similar ban.

ByteDance, the company behind TikTok has claimed a profit of 3 Billion Dollars in 2019. Their total revenue in 2019 is over 17 Billion dollars. ByteDance doubled its 7.4 Billion dollar revenue in 2018.

While there are serious security concerns, it is still not proven that TikTok has acted maliciously. At least not any more than any other social media app like Facebook, Whatsup, and Instagram.

TikTok spokesperson says they are committed to the security of its 100 million users.

"TikTok's biggest investors come from the US. We are committed to protecting our users' privacy and safety as we continue working to bring joy to families and meaningful careers to those who create on our platform."
- TikTok spokesperson

Rumors are that Microsoft has been considering an acquisition of the TikTok app.

This made me chuckle.

Been fine without those apps spying on my life. TikTok is probably the least essential of the ones you mentioned.

Think it is time for Congress to pass some laws/regulations to specify what kind of apps are illegal to post for public downloads. American apps should be held to the same privacy/safety standards as Chinese ones.

I do find it funny how Trump is so concerned about TikTok when Facebook has committed so many acts of privacy invasion and sharing private data with third parties.

Yes indeed ...

great firewall of China America.

While I don't use or watch Tiktok, I believe in freedom of choice, and a "ban" will only make Tiktok more popular in America, like anything government tries to prohibit.

I don't think it'll work that way, I mean you don't see millions of Huawei devices being smuggled into the US. It's not like alcohol or narcotics. I don't believe people will go out of their way to be on TikTok

It's actually more like alcohol or narcotics than a piece of hardware. Social media apps are designed to be addictive and habit forming. It's also important to factor in the reason for the ban, and in this case it seems oddly political. If the motivations are partisan, banning Tiktok in the US will pour gas on a fire. Just watch.

TikTok is a security nightmare and shit. Like Zoom. And many other things.
A ban is not the solution. The solution is enduser education: Don't use shit that is known for horible security and without the source published.

Yes, omg you need some more upvotes. This is the only long-term solution. You can ban TikTok today and tomorrow everybody's gonna use some other app that spies on them so what's the difference.

That's kinda expected.

I'm surprised it took this long.

Rumors are that Microsoft has been considering an acquisition of the TikTok app.

Roll out the FUD, get a discounted price.

Wise Choice on Trump side

blacklist me baby ♥️

For once Trump is making a good decition. TikTok is cancer.

Ahh the app where the covid nurses are constantly dancing not taking care of patients, it won't be missed.

WTF? They're not allowed to have some downtime? Give yourself an upper-cut, son.

Peace be upon you.

He did get owned by TikTokers after all.

I never saw that, got links to any good ones?
