Most of the foreign tourists might have not heard of Fukui. Fukui is actually a good place if you want to get away from your hectic city life.
Around 10km away from Fukui City, lies one of Japan’s most interesting heritage site the Ichijodani Asakura Clan Ruins. The ruins are unique in that they remained untouched beneath the ground for more than 400 years.
Asakura Clan Ruins has received three national accolades . A place that was once under control for 103 years by the Sengoku Era Asakura clan. However it was defeated and burned down in flames by Nobunaga Oda in 1573 during the fight to unify the country. The legacy of Asakura reached its end.
Here are some of the interesting things in the site :
1. Restored Town
Townhouses of ordinary citizens and other structures of the townscape have been restored using the excavated stone walls and cornerstones.
Within the town, you can try on the costumes and take those photos with the restored townscape in the background.
2. Gardens
There are 4 gardens in the site.
3. The Karamon gate
The gate was not built during Sengoku Era but a structure from early Edo Era.
