Sending warm clothes to Ukraine

in #ukraine2 years ago

The other day I received a message from a friend stating they were rounding up warm clothes, blankets, and hygiene products to be sent over to Ukraine. She (@mallorcamum) wanted to know if I had any of the above spare to take down to the local Ukrainian church for Friday this week.

Considering I've moved 7 times in the past 5 years, I'm not particularly well stocked on clothes, or anything really, but I had visited a second hand store recently which did seem to have a reasonable selection of clothing, with some of it looking reasonably warm.

This store is in the north of the island, and is one of another friend's (hopefully you'll see her soon on Hive, and without warm clothes!) favourite shops for bargains. She visits regularly and often purchases items for herself, friends, and family (I have a new-looking jacket ready to go which I've not worn yet), and so I thought I'd give her a reason to visit again this week.

Yesterday, she turned up with this:

A rather bulky bag containing 18 items - jackets, jumpers, and coats - large and small.

The shopkeeper asked why she was purchasing so many things, seemingly ignoring the sizes and designs, and so it was explained that they were to be shipped over to the Ukraine. The lady at the counter immediately halved the total sale price of the items.

Apparently my friend was not the first to stop by on a warm clothes mission, and the store had been busy with other people dropping items in or rounding a bag up for forward travel. This part of Mallorca is quite affluent, and as I took the clothes out of the bag earlier today to have a better look (and for some photos), I was impressed by the quality of what is there - on sale for much less than the original sale price. I couldn't find a single hole in any of the items - no rips, no frayed threads, and most items looking as good as new.

As mentioned, some of the clothes are rather small, and a pink jacket for a toddler stood out and made me think - fuck, this is some serious bullshit. As if the last couple of years haven't been bad enough for some families, and now this. Forced to leave your home in fear of it being flattened with you inside, horrible.

This evening I'll be taking this bag to @mallorcamum to add to her collection of things heading for Ukraine. In the grand scheme of things this is only a small contribution but I guess if there are more people willing to do the same, hopefully the impact will be a positive one.

Best wishes to those not having the best of times at present, and thank you to those helping out where they can.

Cheers,

Asher

You are a star ! So is your friend , Thank you so much , every piece of clothing could be the difference between someone getting a good nights sleep , or not catching their death in the freezing climate , see you later and thank you again x

That is so awesome! You are a star!

Well it was your idea and my friend did the shopping - you guys deserve the credit 😘

See you later, I'm wondering if I'll need the car for the bag - cycling could be tricky 😁

Nice work :)

It is very sad what is happening. Today exactly, I come to me, a Ukrainian family looking for psychological support, despite not being able to enter their accounts because of what is happening, they lost their daughter a couple of years ago (she is still missing, but the mother thinks that she will not see her again). If it is sad and more when you know the story of each person. It's good that they are supporting with clothes :)

It is sad. And it's not the only land battle taking place, just one on European soil which I for one thought I'd never see.

That's a great idea! Very cool that the shop discounted the clothes further as well. It's nicely see people doing what they can. Big and small acts of kindness and compassion go a long way.

Yeah she's a goodun', as is the shopkeeper. Hopefully they make it there and are greatly received.

This is such a fnck up. The children and the animals.

It is. 'We' seemingly don't learn :(

History shows it. More's the pity.

The world and madmen. Egotists and megalomaniacs.

Those are nice clothes. It's clearly pathetic that a stronger nation would resort to war in this 21st century over a smaller nation. Our hearts are with Ukraine. Brilliant gesture from you.

They are of very good quality and I hope they make it to those in need.

It is shocking that this is taking place, very sad.

Thanks for stopping by :)

This is awesome, as are you my good man.

Cheers dude, good to 'see' ya :)

This is a good idea and they have been doing similar around here to the point that there isn't much warm gear left anywhere. Nice to see.

Glad to hear that, although with your temps there could be a little less going spare - it's 16c here, 8 overnight - not quite so tropical in Funland or the Ukraine.

Yeah, it is good that people are helping. Though, I think people in Russia are going to need some help too soon. It is not like their government cares about them.

Thats so cool they halved the cost of the clothes! My contribution is only small too but it will all add up

Yeah that was pretty solid of the good lady behind the counter. They say every little helps, in most cases anyway 😯 😉

Tis amazing how so many people are coming together and forgetting all the other shit for the moment and doing their bit. Awesome actually!!

Fabulous! It may seem a small gesture but it will probably mean the world the the receivers.

I hope so. It was tough to see those small clothes today thinking, a small person might be desperate for this right now.

Such a lovely thing to do. We all need to be doing this

I do hope aid arrives where it is needed, thanks :)

Much love to all those involved! This is such a wonderful thing to do as, even when I send $$ this is better for some things that may not be available at this time.

Brava!

Everyone involved is a rockstar! God Bless you.

From South Africa our wonderful Gift of the Givers have involved themselves in assisting (something they have years of experience in).

No one wins in war, keep in mind many Russians are against what is happening, just as bewildered as we are. Ukraine folk I know, have been able to find safe haven for now, lots of assistance will be needed, hopefully soon this madness will stop.

This is so thoughtful of you and your friend, @mallorcamum.
