It really depends on what you want to do. In the simplest case, you can just add your own UIAs and gateways and those UIAs can then be traded on the market.

Your backup will work with light wallet, with bitshares.org/wallet, with btsabc (chinese), with freedomledger, with bitcash and so on. Openledger have problems, but Bitshares is decentralized.
