This is an important one - In aid of the people of Acapulco

in #acapulco6 months ago

Dear Hivean friends,

I've been meaning to post more Hivefest posts but this is more important. Only a few days ago, I heard about the devastating hurricane that hit Acapulco. Weirdly enough, there was only little information about it in the regular news media and good, reliable info was hard to find. Or maybe it's not so weird...But more about that in another post maybe...

Acapulco was hit directly by a category 5 hurricane

Apparently, on Wednesday, October 25th, Otis went from a 65-mph tropical storm to a Category 5 hurricane within hours and made landfall in the state of Guerrerro, where Acapulco is located.
The hurricane and the landslides that followed destroyed many buildings and killed at least 30 people, and many are still missing. I don't trust the media, so these numbers could be much higher...
People are without water, food, or electricity...So many people are completely cut off from the outside world. Shops have already been looted, and you can imagine what goes on there now with people panicking and being displaced.
From what I did hear in the media, most hotels have major damage, and that is 'just' the hotels. Many people have lost their homes and more. Most of them were people who already had nothing to begin with.

Close to my heart

First of all, I live in Mexico so this was tough news to hear.
Secondly, we were in Acapulco in February 2022 so we've met quite a few of the locals there.
Not only are these people among the nicest people you will ever find, they also worked very hard, after the Covid restrictions already took so much from them, to come back from that.
And now they'll have to do it all again.

Also, Acapulco was supposed to be our home before we decided to come here instead, so we could have been one of the families there...

Help is needed

I wish I could go there myself and help these people in person (I will be there in February, if circumstances allow), but I am in no position to do so right now.
I am also in no position to donate huge amounts of money to this cause.
So I am doing the only thing I can do right now.
Jeff Berwick, aka The Dollar Vigilante set up a GoFundMe to help the victims of this devastation.
Love him or hate him, but at least he's doing something.
The government isn't doing much. In fact, here where I live, most people haven't even heard about it...

I'm going to try to write more posts than usual these next few days or weeks, and I will donate all the liquid rewards to the GoFundMe that the Dollar Vigilante team has set up.

If you'd like to help, you can do so by either upvoting this post or directly donating to GoFundMe below:

Here is the website that was set up for more information:

And here is Jeff's video about it. Jeff called Acapulco his home for many years, so this is close to his heart too.

There are people right now helping, driving supplies to the area, etc. They are recording everything so they can prove that it's all going where it's supposed to go.
If you want to know more about this, you can join the Anarchapulco Telegram group, but I will also post some of the videos here whenever I can.

Lastly, I will try to match as much of the liquid post rewards as I can, so that some of my HP will go to the people that need it the most.
I will record everything so you'll see that it's actually going there.

That's all people. Please, help if you can. I know everyone there will appreciate it.

Jeff posted that the gofundme account had been blocked (gofundme is notoriously dodgy). Do you know if that has been undone now?

Hmm, no idea. I've been trying to find this information on the Anarchapulco group, but it's not very helpful. But they offer the possibility to donating crypto too. I think that's what I'll do once I can. By the way, the government seems to be quite involved now too. The national guard is handing out survival packages, and people are brought to Mexico City on free flights. However, there are areas in Acapulco where they're not doing much, like Bonfil near the airport. So that's what the Anarchapulco people are focusing on. And agreed, GoFundme is dodgy.

Ah ok, I just saw Jeff mention it in a recent video. He also said that the government were doing a lot more than he had originally been told - he blamed the media for mis representing the situation!
