Alcedo lugubris Japan

The large piebald kingfisher has a black upper side of the head. From white spots, sides black with white longitudinal stripes;

there is a lot of white on the back side of the defense; the upper side of the body is white with grayish-black transverse stripes, the wings and tail are black with white spots; the bottom is white, on the sides of the throat there is a row of black spots and the same row across the goiter;

flanks with gray-black transverse spots, and lower tail coverts with black In the male across the crop, a wide light-red stripe and axillary white marks are found and with black markings, female and young goiter without red, but axillary redheads.

The eye is brown, the beak is dark horn, the legs are olive-gray. Wing 173/4-191/, cm; tail 10-111 cm; metatarsus 1.0-1.3 cm; a somewhat darker race, the guttulata, inhabits southern China, Indo-China, and the eastern parts of India.
