Casper the dog had become a favorite of the students at the Northwest A&F University in the city of Xi’an, in China’s Shaanxi province. He used to regularly attend English and calculus classes. The campus mascot had received plenty of attention, including on social media, and was adored by each student. However, it appears that university officials weren’t so fond of the dog and decided to get rid of it. They lured the dog ouf of class and pounded the defenseless animal until it died; they later threw his body in the dumpster and acted like nothing had happened.
A shocked student discovered Casper’s lifeless body and posted the sad news on social media.

A spokesman from the institution confirmed that all stray dogs on campus had been terminated, claiming they were a threat to both students and teachers. If a dog bites someone, we are directly held accountable and we cannot allow this to happen. In addition, it is believed the stray dog was damaging the reputation of the institution as one of the top universities in China.
However, students are furious with this decision and say Casper was loved by everyone. One teenager claims that Casper actually had a good influence on people.
Sometimes we would joke that only the dog was paying attention at the class. I think he was really fond of the English and calculus classes, since the seats were best there for him to sleep on – the student stated.
Another student claims that Casper would just sit on the chair all day and wasn’t a threat to anyone: I think they were embarrassed by Casper’s presence. I feel, however, that having a pet attend classes is a sign of progressions and forward-thinking.
Unfortunately, since China does not have any animal protection laws, Casper’s atackers will never be brought to justice. This petition is not just about Casper, but for all the animals that are abused in China each year – and they are millions of them! Dog cand meat meat are one of the most popular dishes in the country, China being host to the biggest dog meat festival on the planet, held in Yulin in June, to celebrate the Summer Solstice. Besides the dog / cat meat trade, another issue that needs to be addressed is the daily cruelty to animals: pets are routinely set on fire, kicked, pounded with all sorts of objects or dragged behind cars – these helpless souls have seen it all! And the perpetrators are never brought to justice because there is no legal basis to do so.
I am asking readers of this petition to take immediate action – please sign and share this campaign so animal welfare laws can finally be adopted in China. It is time for the government in Beijing to acknowledge animal rights as a priority and ensure the voiceless are given the protection they deserve.
