Got imagination blocks? Few tips on how to get over it :)

in #art7 years ago

Imagination blocks can be a huge pain in the butt, especially when you're already in the middle of doing your masterpiece, whether it be artblock or writingblock. Even yesterday, I had scrapped 3 half-finished drawings and ended up with nothing but peeved off mood. It's all the more frustrating when the inspiration and motivation you had driving you just evaporates.

However I did realize something yesterday.

1. You are your biggest critic
One of the main reasons I, personally, get stuck on my work and end up ditching it is because I feel like what I have done isn't good enough. That it is too imperfect and needs a lot more improvements. From there, I start thinking maybe the idea I had isn't that great and I start doubting the potential it has. But, here's the thing, no work is ever going to be perfect, no matter how many hours you spend redoing, at least not in your own eyes. As creators ourselves, we tend to overthink everything we do and think more about the flaws rather than the highlights.
The way to get over this? Simple. Don't stop. Don't give up. Just finish it no matter what. It might surprise yourself by making a masterpiece, or it could be a flop. Either way, there's no guarantee, so might as well try. It's one step to bettering yourself and one more step to success.

2. Practice everyday
Even when you don't feel like it, just pick up your pen and do something everyday. Don't procrastinate and make the most of the free time you have. Once you let go of the routine, you will lose that passion to continue and in the future, end up regretting it. It doesn't have to be a complete something; it can be a doodle or venting or even practicing techniques. At least it is something to help you improve your work. You don't have to spend a lot of time on it, and maybe along the way you will gain some motivation or idea ;)

3. Take a break
Always remember to take a break when you feel tired. It is not good to do the same thing for long periods of time. The human brain doesn't work like that. It will eventually get bored. As such, whenever you start feeling frustrated or fed up doing your work, just get up, stretch for a bit, eat something, maybe take a nap. You can even do something else your passionate about. Vary your activities. As long as you get back to your work, which you will when you are ready and fresh with ideas and truly passionate about it.

4. Take inspiration from the things you love
When you're out of ideas drawing something, go look at your idol's artwork. When you're out of writing ideas, go pick up your favourite book and read. For me, the reason I got into drawing is because of my growing love toward anime. Artsyles such as the ones you see in Shingeki No Kyojin, Tokyo Ghoul, Kimi No Nawa and Hyouka really inspire me, so when I'm starved for ideas, I plop myself in front of such shows. I also look at tons of fanart and the different artstyles they have. Same with writing, when I can't think of anything to write, I read books and learn from different author's writing styles. It is not wrong to gain motivation from the things you love, just don't copy em haha

5. Express your emotions
One of the best and easiest ways to overcome imagination blocks is simply expressing your feelings in your work. It causes your work to become genuine and personal, attracting more viewers, and above all, causing self-satisfaction. Letting out emotions is healthy and what better way than to express it in a form where your creating in the way you love. Never do something that doesn't bring you happiness, where your doing it just for the sake of getting famous or getting paper. Do something you take joy out of and then is when you will truly succeed.

I hope this post helps any fellow creators having trouble. Thank you and have a good day ^W^
