The former police headquarters in Hong Kong turned into a world-class cultural preserve and art center. It became the largest cultural heritage rejuvenation project in Hong Kong history.
Tai Kwun consists of 16 historic buildings and open spaces in an area of 13,600 square meters. Its location is in the center of Hongkong business area.
Tai Kwun became the residence of three cultural heritages, namely the former Police Headquarters, the Central Office of Justice, and the Victoria Prison.
The local name used by police officers and the public to refer to the Police Headquarters has been a silent witness of Hong Kong's 170-year history.
The rejuvenation project is headed by the Hong Kong Jockey Club, in collaboration with the Hong Kong Government and involves the preservation of a number of historic buildings and two new buildings, JC Contemporary, a gallery with contemporary art space, and JC Cube, an auditorium for performing arts, works of film and educational activities.
Previously for this rejuvenation, the Hong Kong Jockey Club gathered advice from various experts from Hong Kong and abroad, as well as input from the local community.
Hong Kong Jockey Club also spent 10 years to complete the plan of cultural heritage rejuvenation and preserve the historic location. Every building, room, the whole location has been restored to its golden age, with attention to every detail.
"After the Police Headquarters Complex through Hong Kong Jockey Club's dedication, patience and diligence for more than a decade and the many experts and workers involved, the public can now celebrate the splendor of the gifts it has gained," said Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Jockey Club , Carrie Lam, who initiated this rejuvenation project about a decade ago, as contained in a press release.
